H&R Block

Bob L. was one of the rudest and least professional people I have had the misfortune of working with. Initially, I thought his visible disdain for me was because I am a young female, as he made a series of vaguely misogynistic remarks. Then, I thought maybe his issue with me was that I am an independent contractor, which made doing my taxes (i.e. his job) more complicated. Upon reading others reviews, it seems that Bob is just generally unpleasant and difficult to work with all around. Having paid upwards of $ 500 to have my taxes done, I would expect at the very least to be treated with mild politeness. Bob obviously needs a new career that better suits his general disdain for humanity, and I strongly recommend he try out for Mr. Burns on the Simpsons.

Brought a friend’s taxes up to this establishment 2 weeks ago to have them taken care of and not a thing had been done with them when I arrived today!? Asked Joel Levine when he could be finished and he says now he can’t do them, he’s way too swamped?! Please consider this a warning if you are going to be dealing with Joel Levine!

I was treated very poorly! Awful experience. Over priced. Rude customer service. Went home, and used turbo tax and amazing how for the first time I was happier to deal with a computer than with a human being. #scarred for life and will NEVER return!

An update that we’ve worked with Greg Ginocchio the past few years and found him eager to help, very friendly and easy going, and flexible about questions during off-​season. Recommended.

Great experience. Raymond Forcier was my tax preparer and he was kind, patient, and very knowledgable.

The bad reviews are out of date but let me go ahead and keep it refreshed. Went in today for my 5pm appointment and waited patiently for 15 minutes before I inquired when I would be seen. Only to find out that the man standing at the receptionist’s desk shooting the *%+! was suppose to be the one helping me. Not only was he rude by shooting the shyt while I wait but when I inquired how much longer, he told me he’d be another 15 – 20 minutes. WHEN WAS ANYONE GOING TO TELL ME?!
I left. Don’t bother going here. Looks like they will overcharge you after making you wait for God knows how long. Thumbs down

This will be the first and last time I will use H&R Block! When I called to make an appt, I had asked for a price range and provided general info about my financial situation as well as the number of documents I have and was quoted no more than $ 200. On the day of the appt, the tax adviser, Maria, asked me why I came and I told her that I came because of the pricing as it was lower than my tax adviser’s pricing. I showed last year’s tax preparation charge. She then reviewed my documents and failed to inform me that her fees would be significantly higher than what she had previously quoted. After she completed my tax return, I was informed that it would cost $ 391, the accountant I previously used charged me $ 345. If I had known that the charge would be higher, I would not gone back to my tax person. I felt that Maria lured me in with the promise of a lower price and then at the last minute stuck me with a charge that was significantly higher than the initial quote and higher than what my previous tax adviser charged. I feel that this kind of business practice is rather misleading, dishonest and predatory. I am very disappointed and upset about this entire experience. I will be sure to warn my friends and family and take to social media to warn others of this experience. NO MORE NEXT TIME!

I’ve hired Michael Morgin the past 3 years and he has bent over backwards to help me go over every last detail to help me report accurately (but also save me money!) He’s easy going, smart, fast and skilled — I would highly recommend him. My fiancé also goes here to do taxes and raves about Greg Ginnocio.

I’m tempted to give one star but gave two because Ron Vest, who help my husband and I with our taxes, as at least very friendly, nice, and willing to work hard. However, he was very, very inexperienced with taxes and clearly found our return overwhelming, though we have a pretty standard case (two jobs, investments).
Our bill was $ 700+. Be very, very careful about this. It will mount up without any warning and their level of expertise in now way justifies the charges.
Finally, I have had the worst time I can imagine getting a receipt for the services. All I need is a piece of paper with H&R Block at the top and the service + charge on the bottom (for work reimbursement). I requested this on the day I paid the bill and they could not provide it (really!!!)!!! I then spent 45 minutes on the phone with 6 different people at 4 different numbers and still have not managed to find anyone who can give me a receipt (yes, they can find my account and the charge, they just can’t offer a receipt). Again, really!!!
How unprofessional! I will absolutely never use them again (this was my second year with them and I had the exact same negative experience last time with exception that my preparer seemed a little more experienced than Mr. Vest).

I have been using Robert McHugh at this office for the last 5 years-​He makes the process smooth and simple. I’ve never had any issues other than making something potentially daunting-​simple and pleasurable. Thumbs up! A great value!

This was my first time having someone do my taxes and I was very nervous about the whole process. I worked with Greg Ginocchio and he was professional, fast and knowledgeable. He discovered some major mistakes that I had made on my taxes in previous years and, without making me feel like an idiot for messing up my taxes, was able to amend them all and get me a bunch of money back. Most impressively, when I got a follow-​up letter from the IRS (that was a mistake that the IRS made, not any fault of Greg’s or H&R Block’s) and Greg was out-​of-​town, he responded to my email immediately (despite being on vacation) and put me in touch with his supervisor Joel Levine. Joel went out of his way to meet with me during his off-​hours to deal with the issue and get it resolved in a timely fashion at no charge even though it took 2 hours of his time. It is certainly not cheap to have someone do your taxes for you, nor is dealing with taxes particularly fun, but I will never do them on my own again and I will definitely be going back to H&R Block!

I had a great experience with Bob L for my taxes this year. I’ve always done my own taxes, but this year things were more complicated since I had income from 3 states, moved for a job, and shifted my primary residence to a rental property. Bob knew exactly how to handle all these factors and worked efficiently. He explained everything as we went along and gave me advice for future tax years. I found him to be professional, patient, and kind, despite what others have written. I will admit that H&R block cost more than I expected — $ 380 for my total bill. With a complicated tax return, though, the peace of mind was worth it.

I am amazed at the way they do business. First I’m told to come back after I get additional info from the IRS. Turns out what I had was exactly what I needed. When I returned for my second appointment on Monday, the last tax day, things moved along just fine. When we were done, I was told that my cost for doing my taxes was $ 318.00.
Last year I did my taxes with someone else and was charged just over $ 100 for the same service. No warning or any notion that I would be paying this much. I am like many others trying to get by on a very limited income, so this came as a shock and a BIG problem for me. I paid it, since I had to file my taxes, but I tell you NEVER H&R again! H&R Block took my lunch money… literally!
Save yourself the hassle not to mention your money… Don’t go to H&R Block!!!

Everything about the experience was truly horrible. In the middle of my appointment, the «tax expert» said he was fried and unable to think clearly. He said he would solve his own dilemma (in not understanding basic tax law) and get back to us in a few days. A few days came and went and when I finally got Robert McHugh back on the phone, he told me he was very busy and that our taxes were difficult. He said he didn’t know when he could get this done. I’d say finding this out on ⁴⁄₆ is not good… Lesson learned — never visit this H&R Block if you actually want your taxes done by someone who understands taxes.

Epic fail. My husband and I drove 500 miles from our vacation home to make a 10:00AM appointment with Robert McHugh. Arrived 10 minutes early. At 10:05 nothing was happening, so we asked the receptionist what the delay was. She passed a note to Mr. McHugh with no response – he was still with his clients. At 10:10 I walked over the his cube and interrupted, saying we were on a tight schedule (both of us needed to get back to work). He just looked up at me, then turned back to his clients. Five minutes later he dismissed his clients and came over to us. «Are you domestic partners?» he asked. «Yes, and we’re legally married,» I replied. He said «We have a problem.» He escorted us to his cube and said he couldn’t take our account – they were swamped and behind and he was overcomitted. I asked why we weren’t notified of this in the two weeks since I made the appointment, and he just shrugged. In a way I’m glad, because I wouldn’t trust someone so disorganized and poor at communications to do my taxes anyway. I asked if there were any other agents available today. «Do you own property?» he asked. I replied yes, we own two homes together. He said that the only agent that was available wasn’t experienced in property issues, so we were out of luck. No referral to another office. No offer to help us find another agent. Just an «I don’t care, I’m overworked and can’t deal» attitude. I got his manager’s name and plan to complain to the branch and to the national firm about the totally piss-​poor service we got (or didn’t get – they did nothing at all.)

I don’t know about all the horrific experiences others had, but my experience with Greg Ginocchio was great. I think because of the way H&R block operates your experience may vary depending on the individual you get but there is a way to research each person and learn about their relative experience when you make an appointment on the H&R Block website.
Greg was friendly and professional and explained things to me as he asked me about my tax situation. He was very efficient and got me in and out of there in under an hour. It was almost alarming how quick he was able to enter information into his computer but he did explain as he went along, and his 8+ years of experience as a Master Tax Advisor made me feel confident about his abilities.
I give Greg 5 stars for his efficiency, accurately estimating the cost of the return up front ($ 210 but I had some special new home buyer forms to fill out, and a 1040 regular form), and looking up a question for me when it was determined that he wasn’t certain about how to handle a special situation. Greg even gave me some tips for witholding next time so that I can better take advantage of the recent new home buyer credit program from the state of California.
I went in thinking I had a tough tax return but Greg made it effortless. I’ve now filed my state and federal tax returns and am patiently awaiting a big refund check. Thanks, Greg!

I completely agreed with all the bad reviews here. I always did our own taxes in the past. However, we are considering to have a professional do it for us this year since we are busy with work and will be on vacation so we won’t get them done in time. I called the office to see how they calculate their fees or whether they would do an estimate first. I spoke to a guy there. I told him I had a quick question. Before I even asked him the question, he told me rudely as if i disturbed him that he didn’t have time for a quick question. I need to call back in an hour. Then, he added he was with a client.
First of all, why on earth you answered the phone if you cannot talk? Secondly, he didn’t even know what I was going to ask him. It could be simply a question about the office hours or direction, etc. If you are going to answer the phone because you can claim you answer all incoming calls, then please don’t especially when you are going to be rude to the customers. I would rather take my business elsewhere i.e. Jason Hewitt where they know how to treat everyone with respects and quickly answers all the questions I had.

I have never experienced a more unprofessional accounting experience as I have at this office. Bob L. Assisted me with a major amendment and right from the beginning, he made me feel as though I was severely complicating his life. He kept expressing physical frustration with his shrugs and nodding his head at what he saw was some work ahead. I’m a day-​trader and it gets complicated. During the process, he called me continuously and at points yelling at me to give him my W2 from 07. I explained to him that the turnover required a couple days because of my professional relationship. He then miscalculated the volume of trades, blamed me and said he’d need a week longer than he said he’d need. He tells me this the day it’s due.
$ 600 later.
I asked to meet with another accountant at his office since I needed help with 08 and 09. Given my horrible experience with Bob, I asked to work with Greg, at a time when maybe Bob wouldn’t be in the office. Unfortunately there wasn’t ever a good time so I just bit my tongue and booked it for today. Of course when I arrive, Bob comes up to me (Even though I asked not to work with him!!) and tells me Greg has a lot on his plate and he would be better suited to help me. I won’t ever go to this office again.

As a server, I made less than $ 20,000 on the books and these assholes charged me $ 214 (yes, TWO HUNDRED and FOURTEEN DOLLARS) for my tax return. My one hour appointment also ran more than 2 hours!
When prompted as to why I was told over the phone that my costs would be between $ 80-​$ 100 and ended up being more than twice that, my «accountant» replied that «None of us want to be here. A lot of people compare doing taxes to going to the dentist.» Umm… ok…
Don’t go here. Tell your friends not to go here. Take 2 hours to do your own taxes and then rack up a $ 200 bar tab instead.
