Hotel Herbert

Staff was very welcoming and friendly. The location is ideal and the room has a good size (we had a deluxe room with private bathroom). There is no breakfast option, but the room had a fridge and coffee making facilities. Unfortunately there was only one chair in the room, so no sitting together for breakfast and we used the ironing board to put our clothes on. It took a while before we realized how the shower works (tip: pull and turn on the ring underneath the tap). We stayed multiple nights and the room was cleaned every day. New towels were also provided daily (although they were not always clean). The bed was very saggy, so we put the matrass on the floor which gave us a better rest. Not ideal, but it was possible because of the size of the room. In terms of location, friendly staff and spaciousness of the room I would recommend this place. Not so for the comfort of the bed.

AWESOME location in the heart of San Francisco. Bank of America ATM around corner. Walgreens next door. Laundry machines there. For a quick trip to SF and change of plans, Hotel Herbert hooked me up like whoa.
For what you pay for San Francisco, this is MORE than awesome. It is ‘A-​OK’!

After reading the previous reviews, I had very low expectations before my trip (had to book it because of my tight budge). But Herbert totally exceeded all my expectations! The girls downstairs were very friendly. I had a room with private bath, and it was clean and convenient. The room came with all amenities of a standard room, including an iron and even a safe. For ~$ 120 a night in the heart of SF, what else are you asking for!!!

Worst customer service with horribly small, unkept hotel guest rooms. First, lights kept turning on and off by themselves at 3am, 5am, and 7am in the room. Secondly, this hotel is treated like a college dorm, and someone was throwing a party next door with loud music and a lot of people until 3am for 3 nights.
WORST OF ALL: front desk has the absolute worst customer service!!! I won’t name names but they’re two girls at the front desk who have bitchy attitudes.

After a horrible air bnb experience, I consulted in the hotel tonight app and found this gem. An exceptionally clean room with our own private bathroom, we were relieved. The room resembled a small studio apartment in size. In the heart of union square, couldn’t ask for a better location. The only con was parking. There are parking garages in the area that charge per hour. I recommend doing your research or using an app for a cheap parking space. Next time I hit SF, I will be staying here again.

I was debating what to rate the hotel between 1 — 3 stars. I’ll start off by saying I get Marriott Associate rates through the company I work for, so you can say I’m a little spoil when it comes to hotel rooms. During my stay in SF, for the first night of my stay I couldn’t find any availability at the surrounding Marriott’s. I looked around and found a room at the Herbert for a decent price of $ 91 including taxes for one night. I did the shared bathroom, since I was getting in the evening and was moving into the Marriott in Union Square the next morning (early check-​in). I thought it shouldn’t be too bad to spend approximately 13 hours here. The room was extremely small, reminded me of the hotel rooms in Europe. The bed was squeaky, if I lifted my head to see the time, that was enough to wake up the neighbors. Not only was the bed squeaky but the mattress was either really old or bad quality, because I kept rolling into my boyfriends side. He’s not even heavy for a man (about 165 lbs.) and I weight 120 but because he was the heavier one the mattress sunk on his side which caused me to keep falling into him. Also, note that the hotel does not have centralized AC or Heat. I was there in January and it was a bit warm but I refused to open our window because it doesn’t have a screen and I was afraid a bug or even worst a rat would crawl into our bedroom.
I was going to check for bed bugs because others suggested that there might be bed bugs at this hotel. Everyone knows how to check for bed bugs right… turn on the blow dryer on HOT and blow it against the corner of the mattress. Well guess what the blow dryer didn’t work. I could also hear the person next door cough and watch tv.
Now moving on to the shared restroom and shared shower. I didn’t use the shower since I was moving to the Marriott shortly after I woke up, but I did use the restroom. I have to say for being a shared restroom it was exceptionally clean, I actually felt bad for spilling water over the sink. That brings me to my next point, the sink was tiny and when I was trying to wash my face to remove my makeup I made a mess. There was toilet paper, paper towels and soap at all times. I peaked into the shower area and it looked clean, I would suggest bringing sandals.
Overall this is a modern college dorm, if you have no problem with that then you should be fine staying here. But it wasn’t for me, ten years ago when I was a broke college student with no Marriott discount I would of loved it.

I loved the lobby area. Although it was small, the décor was nice. The room was pretty nice. The bed was the best part… very comfy. Although, I was not into the neon lighting in the room and one of the lamps was broken. A bar of soap would have been nice for washing up at night. We had a bathroom in between us and our next door neighbor. Our side was locked because we only paid for the hallway bathroom. The door was open on the neighbors side and we could hear EVERYTHING he did in there. It was pretty gross. We could hear people across and down the hall as well. No one was being loud or rude it’s just there are huge gaps under the doors so noise really travels. Also, the room was really bright in the morning, so between the light and amount of noise good luck sleeping in.

Make sure you get a room that has a bathroom. Some are shared like a hostel and shared showers so bring flip flops. This was not disclosed when we booked the room so be aware. The staff was friendly enough. Also early check in is not available so if you plan to arrive early be breasted to leave your bags in a communal storage room where you have lock your bags up and use a cable to secure them to an I beam. I expected the staff to have a check room they attend to for 250 a night. It’s not worth it. Location is great. The room we had was nice. But others were sketchy. I probably wouldn’t stay here again.

I had a good stay here for one night… requested for a room with. A bathroom so avoided have to go to a share shower and bath. My room was clean. The location is great right outside h&m and market Street on your left and union Square on the right… would definitely come here again if in a crunch for time and money.

Glorified hostel. Rooms are big, but no AC, which wouldn’t be a problem, if you could open the windows without hearing crazy hobos and construction. As if the outside noise wasn’t enough, there is no semblance of sound proofing… AT ALL! You can hear EVERYTHING (inside and outside). Also, pretty sure there was a mouse in our room. A MOUSE! The elevator is shit. Concierge knew NOTHING!!!
High note: close to China town, and cheapest place available within less than a day’s notice

What a horrible night front desk staff with the evil looks and disparaging comments because my wife wasn’t on the reservation and arrived in advance of me. Every time we stay here it is something different and the wifi never works. Rooms on the street side are nearly impossible to sleep in due to the noise and cheap windows. Last time for us!

Read their site before booking. There are shared bathrooms in some rooms. If you DON’T want a shared one, book a private bathroom. Pretty sure this is a hostel sort of place.
I had a very clean room, with a wonderful view of chipotle down below. Room was clean, private bathroom, with complimentary coffee in room. I don’t drink coffee, but would have been nice if I did.
Also has a laundry facility on second floor.
Pretty decent place. Staff was nice. Lobby door does lock at 7pm (weird) so make sure to have your key if you go out.

The hotel was okay, nothing special about it. Girl in the front was pretty rude and didn’t seem so welcoming. We had shared bathrooms and shower which I was worried about but they weren’t bad. The room was tiny but it wasn’t bad for what we paid. The only thing that made me give this hotel 2 stars was because I found a bug on the bed when I woke up, I don’t know if it was a bed bug or a baby cokaroach, either way it was gross.
When I found the bug, I immediately started looking for more and started moving the bed. The bed had yellow stains on it and looked dirty. I personally wouldn’t come here again

I ran in the Nike Marathon in 2013 and got a room here, upon walking in the lobby its a quaint and cute little spot, then I got on the elevator, and when the doors opened to my floor, I thought «oh shit! What did I do?» It was just so OLD, and smelled old too! I got to my room and closed my eyes because I was afraid to open the door… but I did, and I was PLEASANTLY PLEASED!
Very nice room. Comfortable bed and most importantly exceptionally clean. I had a room with a PRIVATE bathroom, i would recommend that definitely being the way to go. Only problem was our room was very very hot, I think it is because it gets direct sun all day. but when you open the window there is great ventilation. Very nice staff at the hotel and a good price.
So when I got to run in the Nike run for 2014 I didn’t hesitate booking a room there. it is right there in Union Square. directly across from H&M!
This year we brought the small humans and got a family suite! Where its basically two rooms joined together by a bathroom! it was really cool and the smalls really enjoyed SF!
For the location, you can’t beat the price! There are a lot of ‘seedy’ places in SF so you have to be careful where you book and where you stay.
And with the Nike run in town prices for hotel rooms had completely skyrocketed.
Cool place to stay without breaking the bank!

Had to present at an academic conference at Moscone Confenrece Center and needed a place in safe walking distance.
PROS: unbeatable location. i came from SFO on the BART and got off the BART station and walked 2 min to the hotel. Short less than 5min walk to dueling pianos, incredible restaurants, wonderful unique shopping (UNIQLO) The very bustling heart of union station. right on the powell street cable car! The checkin process was smooth, bno rudeness. The room itself was very clean and modern bedding with strong wifi, safe, crisp sheets, ample towels, hardwood floors. (No in room sink)
CONS: Be prepared for european/​hostel style. (I paied 217 $ including tax on a weeknight) A shared bathroom means literally one toilet and one shower stall to share between an entire hallway worth of people. embarassing walk of shame from shower to room. And yes the shower smells of urine and mildew and is not maintained well by staff.
If you can get past the disgusting shower situation, you’re golden because the location cannot be praised enough. Powell street cable car!

Totally worth the money if you get a room with its own restroom.
Overall a very nice hotel for the price, great customer service, and it provides you the essentials without destroying your wallet.
The bed I slept in was comfortable and there were no issues with the room’s setup. The only concern was that the shower seemingly had no way to get the shower head turned on but I called the front desk and they were quick to help me out.
No parking on site but there is a garage really close by. The location is excellent.
My only negative criticism is that there seems to be a concern venue next door and they play music at night but I can deal with it for the price. As I’m writing this, the band is doing a cover of Pharrell’s Happy.
I WOULD recommend this place for sure.

Promised us 2 beds. Delivered 1 bed and no bathroom. Poor service at front desk.
Location is good. But this is more like a hostel than a hotel.
Grumpy staff. Expect to be pissed when you leave.

During our stay here, we went through 3 employees at the front desk. The first one was incredibly rude. First, she didn’t acknowledge us when we came in and looked like she was hoping we couldn’t find her. Then, when we had any questions for her, she literally snapped at us. The other two we saw were very pleasant (so I don’t want to pin this review on their hard work).
The dreadful 5^th floor: If you end up here, you have made a very terrible mistake. I don’t care if this lady snapped at us for not reading the fine print somewhere on the web page but I don’t think any hotel should ever make it appropriate to have an entire floor share ONE toilet and ONE bathroom. This is not a prison. Did I mention we paid $ 150 for this room too? Why would they give us a sink but no toilet or shower? And we were given only one towel for a king-​size bedroom. Am I expected to share? Why is everything in the bathroom almost out of toiletries and comes straight from an old dispenser?
You would’ve thought the lady would be courteous enough to say ‘I can offer an upgrade.’ Her response to our surprise was ‘well that’s what you ordered, deal with it!‘
Priceline, you tricked us. I’m pretty sure this experience wouldn’t have been so bad if that lady at the front desk could’ve handled the situation more efficiently. Nope, we had to ‘deal’ with what we had.

I stayed here on a Friday –Sunday with my friend.
Weekend prices are about twice as much as weekday prices.
Compared to all the other hotels in downtown SF, this was the only one that was «kind of» affordable, total came to about $ 350 for 2 nights.
We had our own room bath and shower, but you can choose to have a shared bathroom if you are trying to save money.
The room is very basic. Literally just a bed, a small desk, luggage rack, and a super old– school heater.
What else do you need though? Why pay exorbitant prices to stay in a luxury hotel, if you are coming to SF to visit, I don’t think that you should be spending that much time in a hotel anyways, instead you should be out exploring the city.
The bed was comfortable and clean (no bed bugs!), we checked after reading all the other reviews saying there were.
What I really enjoyed was the view ! We stayed on the 6^th or 7^th floor, and this hotel is right across the street from H&M, when we opened our window you could dangle your feet OVER the ledge! It was so cool, since they had no locks on the window, you can practically do whatever you want.
There was this man shaving and dancing directly across the street, we watched him for a good 10 minutes and he never saw us at all.
P. S. You can even flash the hordes of people outside and no one will know ;) not saying we did that or anything lolol.
P. S.S. If you are renting a room, I’d suggest you to try and get a room that faces the street.
