John Campbell’s Irish Bakery

100% Irish and fancied a taste of home. Had been here in the past, but my most recent visit changed my mind about this place. Got a pork sausage roll and asked for it to be heated, it was heated way too long and done in microwave so taste like rubber and the meat filling was not real meat but maybe a substitute so totally not enjoyable. Grease coming off sausage roll was beyond normal so threw most of it in trash. Plain scones were okay also, but could be better.

Passing by this place a lot when I used to take the 38 bus. Decided to try it honestly because my fav boyband was Irish haha. I Unilocaled it and decided to get various different flavors of scones and also the corned beef. The blueberry scones are amazing! It’s so soft even though they were 2 – 3 days old.

I hear they call their cookies biscuits, and they call their biscuits scones, but who cares when you butter it up and put it in your face?

Great spot for baked goods! They used to be cash only but I think they might accept cards now… but bring cash just in case.
Apple Puff — My favorite thing they make! Warm and amazing inside.
Rhubarb Tart — Practically perfect in every way.
All the pasties are good. Make sure you get them hot.
Sausage Roll — Tastes incredible, but know that you will get covered in grease.
Scones are a little on the dry side (but that’s what they are supposed to be), I like getting the ones with cream.
This year I splurged and got one of the small plum puddings. I’ve never had one before so I can’t compare it, but I wasn’t really a fan. The flavor was good, but there were raisins in it. I can’t stand raisins in baked goods. If I had known I wouldn’t have bought it. My bad for not knowing what the heck plum pudding is.

Such a cute little place! My boyfriend and I tried 4 different items, unfortunately I felt as though the food was lacking in flavor. That same day it was raining, we had gone there for breakfast. they had no where to sit inside or outside. That being said my boyfriend and I had to eat on the curb, that put a real damper on the whole experience!

The pork sausage and hot coffee is the perfect way to start a day

sweet, not too buttery and satisfying.
apple custard cake — yummy! can’t have too much at once because it does get a bit cloying.
blueberry scone — tastes like other scones i’ve had but less crumbly and butter (which is a plus for me).

I finally got to step into this bakery after a year and a half of it catching my eye. It’s a cozy little bakery shop catered to the person on-​the go, meaning there is no seating. You just grab a bag and a pair of thongs and go. The blueberry and chocolate chip scones were delicious. Not dry and crumbly but also isn’t so dense. I got their meat pie as well and though it is a hearty way to put food in your belly, it was a bit too greasy for me.
When I am in town next, I’ll be sure to try something different but until now, I’d say it’s 3.5 –4 stars for me. The scones are worth making a morning trip.

I have no other Irish bakery to compare this to, but damn this place is good. They have awesome blueberry and chocolate chip scones which they will gladly warm up for you. I am not even a scone person and instantly liked them. However, what really stood out was the beef pastie. It was awesome and really big. Like an oversized empanada, but better. It is a whole meal in itself and got me full (no easy task). This is only a couple of blocks away from me and I cant believe it’s taken me more then a year to finally make it here. Will definitely be back to try the other savory items like their shepherds pie, and a couple of other things.

The one Irish bakery I know of in San Francisco, and the only one I need! John Campbell’s forgoes the all-​too-​common Irish kitschy bric a brac, focusing instead on what you came for: the scones, pasties, sausage rolls, shepherd’s pies, and other baked goods. The decorations are pictures/​drawings of a couple dogs, which I assume are the owner’s. You have an Irish blessing and a letter to the Republic signed by James Connolly (maybe the Easter Proclamation? the text was small). Rather more authentic than throwing Joyce/​Wilde etc. everywhere.
Moving on to the food: there’s no seating here, so you’ll be getting everything to eat to go. I’ve had the plain scone, blueberry scone, plain scone with cream and jam, meat pasty (very much like a Cornish pasty), and chicken curry pasty. The scones are great, denser and a bit drier than my mother’s, but good nonetheless. At home we’d do scones with jam, but with cream and powdered sugar works very well with these because they’re denser. The meat pasty is fantastic, very filling giving the price. I wasn’t actually a fan of the chicken curry pasty, the curry was very dry and the consistency was weird. The one thing here I haven’t liked!
While here, grab some Barry’s, the finest tea. And maybe a Lucozade too, though I end up getting one more for the sentimental value than because I like them.

I liked this bakery but honestly I was expecting a lot more.
For one: There is no seating. Don’t be like me and come all the way out here expecting that you’ll be able to sit down and enjoy a piping hot pastie with coffee (which is what I was hoping for). Instead, I had to slither into a local coffee shop, buy coffee, and feel a bit guilty about openly eating someone else’s baked goods instead of ordering the baked goods at the coffee shop. I tried to clean up the crumbs as best I could.
Scones with cream: Decadent and good. There was also strawberry sauce (like the ice cream sauce) in it and it definitely tasted nice.
Chicken curry pastie: A lot of chunks of potato and a bit light on the chicken. Flavor was there but the crust was kind of flat and not flakey enough to be outstanding. Also it was a bit cold by the time I decided to go to the local coffee shop.
Soda bread: Good. Nothing to write home about but a good, semi-​dense bread with raisins interspersed and a thick crust.
Blueberry scone: Liked it. It’s not too dry but I like my scones on the buttery melty side. It was a bit more… bread-​like. Also I like them with tea… but ate it before I got to the coffee shop.

Note that not all items on the website menu are available consistently. They advertise an almond raspberry tart but it is, according to the person behind the counter, available only on a random basis. I recommend calling ahead.
I tried a chocolate chip scone, which was passable; the sausage roll and chicken focaccia were also perfectly serviceable.

I absolutely LOVE this bakery. Why didn’t I discover this gem sooner? Their pastries are definitely unique and everything here is delicious. I’m not a very big fan of scones, but they’ve made me a believer. Their scones are so yummy! I’ve tried the chocolate chip both with filling and without as well as the blueberry. Their scones are more on the moist side and go great with coffee or tea. Their sausage rolls and their shepard’s pies are both very filling and flavorful. I believe they’re open until 7pm on most days but they do sell out on their popular items so be sure to stop by early and grab a few. Ever since my coworker told me about this place, I’ve visited numerous times in the past couple of months. That’s how you know you’ve found a good spot. When their goodies are good enough for you to return.

How is this so close and I had no clue? Cookin up hearty things from pies to pastries, JCIB is holding it down for the Irish.
We stopped by on a walk out to Ocean Beach and got some scones, which were dense and exactly what we needed after a night of drinking. While there we sampled the various pot pies which made me wish it was a rainy day and I was at home in my sweats, chowing a pie down in front of the fire.
Weather aside, this small bakery has some great offerings that you just can’t find in a grocery store or coffee shop. Check it out!

Being in the area several weeks ago, and ever the fan of a good scone (or two, or three), I couldn’t help but drop by to give John Campbell’s a try. While some of the other offerings there seemed promising (like the shepherd’s pie and the pasties), I opted to just get myself a blueberry and a chocolate chip scone this time around.
Heating them up the next two days, one in the microwave (which was a mistake), and one in the toaster oven, I’d say that, simply, they were okay. Neither the worst nor the best I’ve had, with an alright texture once toasted and buttered, but a bit too bland and crumbly when dry. I definitely much prefer the scones I’ve had at some coffee shops in Taiwan, as well as the ones at Arizmendi, though they make a different variety than John Campbell’s does (which I’d say is the more traditional version).
That said, not too bad, and I can see myself dropping by if I were in the area again, if not just to try some of the other offerings on hand.

Venue — A small little shop with DIY bread pickup, and display cases for the other pastries. I suspect some of the bread higher up or lower down may prove a little more difficult to grab, but, otherwise, the bakery is accessible.
Bathroom — Pretty sure there isn’t one for customer use.

There are quickly perishable products behind the cold case: sausage rolls ($ 4), scones with cream ($ 3), pasties and a snack called, ‘breakfast in bed’ (bread with sausage, black + white pudding, eggs, and cheese baked into it).
The front window display is self-​serve, grab a pair of tongs and a paper bag and help yourself to delicate tea cookies with lemon curd and raspberry jam centers (thumbprints) for $ 0.30 each. Glazed coconut shortbread cookies, crumbly blueberry scones (under $ 2 each) piled high in wooden baskets just screaming for preserves or clotted cream and curd. [

The problem with everything being so affordable, is that you have quickly shoved a dozen buttery tea cookies into your bag and now it’s $ 3.60, plus your two scones with and without cream and your sausage roll. John Campbell’s knows the name of the game. And the name is, shove this delicious Irish sausage encased in a puff pastry sleeve into my mouth, followed by several tea cookies the size of a half dollar coin… and all before the 38 has even approached the stop.

If you love doughy, sweet OR savory deliciousness, you’re in the right place. I first came for the pasty’s and occasional soup. I’m not a scone fan but the shortbread cookies and garlic focaccia are bar none. Nothing like taking a bite into a perfectly soft, buttery, herby, garlic clove with soft chewy dough.
Don’t get me started on the almond raspberry tart. So yummy.

We got a slice of the corned beef slice. At $ 5 a slice it packs a lot– beef, potato, garlic, cabbage, cheese, ranch, Dijon mustard, butter, and cream. It was super filling! The Dijon was a bit too overpowering and masked the other flavors. We asked to have our slice heated up but after a 3 – 5 min wait the slice was still lukewarm. We asked for it to be heated again and again, the slice came out to be just about the same temperature as it was before. we should have just taken the slice home and stuck it in our oven. I think it would have tasted much better.

También venden cosas ensaladas (tipo empanadas irlándeses que te puedes llevar como snack a medio día). Hay mucha selección y todo está muy bueno y fresco. He probado el bluebuerry (arándano) scone, unos cookies y el pan Irlandés (muy bueno por cierto). Cada vez que paso delante (la parada del bus 38 está casi delante), miro el escaparate que me hace la boca agua. Subo rápido en el bus para resistir al poder de la delectación.
