John Varvatos is a brand that occupies a unique place in the landscape of American design. It unites old world craftsmanship and refined tailoring with modern innovations in textiles and a rock ‘n’ roll sensibility. Launched in 2000 with a collection of tailored clothing and sportswear, the brand now represents an entire lifestyle that includes belts, bags, footwear, eyewear, limited edition watches, luxury skincare and fragrances, as well as the younger, edgier John Varvatos Star USA collection and Converse by John Varvatos.

Established in 2000.

From the very beginning, John Varvatos infuses his namesake collection with a creative spirit and intrinsic edge so recognizably his own. In his own words, he designs the line for «a guy who appreciates beautiful fabrics and great details, without being too over-​the-​top.» The signature Varvatos approach translates the best vintage looks and tailoring techniques into an original style that is always relevant and unmistakably modern.

«My philosophy is about reaching back to move forward,» says John. «I have something different to say with a sensibility that is both old and new.»

The designer credits his early obsession with rock music and the eclectic style of the artists as the catalyst for his interest in fashion. Business Owner

John Varvatos joined Polo Ralph Lauren in 1983. Recruited by Calvin Klein in 1990, he was appointed head of menswear design and oversaw the launch of the men’s collection and the influential cK brand. In 1995, he returned to Polo as Head of Menswear Design for all Polo Ralph Lauren brands and created the highly successful Polo Jeans Company.

For Fall/​Winter 2000, John launched his première men’s collection and in the same year was recognized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) with the Perry Ellis Award for New Menswear Designer. He received a second CFDA award for Menswear Designer of the Year in 2001; this successive honor was an unprecedented achievement in this category. In 2005, John was once more recognized by the CFDA with the Menswear Designer of the Year Award and in 2007 GQ magazine named John _​Designer of the Year_​in its 12th Annual _​Men of the Year_​issue.

Dear John. Love your clothes. Love your stores… except the one in San Francisco. Purchased $ 1,400 jacket in South Beach in Dec. And spent an equal amount online in the past few months. I realize this makes me one of your lower end clients, but I always receive excellent service in your stores — except this one. Last trip I was dressed head to toe in your clothes, and your sales people didn’t even realize it until one recognized I had one of your bags made on Italy, unlike the current collections from China. Today I was entirely ignored at this same store. With only one other client in the store, no employee approached mean the 15 minutes I was there. Ouch! Still a fan, but will wait until NY, LV or South Beach to visit a store again.

Loved my JV boots. But less than a year on a pair of boots that I only really wear in the fall and winter, I have had them resoled and now the stitching is coming apart. That is NOT acceptable for their price point especially.

If I can give Amy 10 stars out of 5 I would, I had a phenomenal experience she was so helpful and nice. Of course I love the store but she made my shopping experience better. Plus she helped my BF with an old perches that he had a small issue with it.

We called corporate to complain about the lack of customer service. Also the cold atmosphere from the staff. In particular the male sales people. The person on the line seemed very concerned and would get back with us. It has been a week now and no response. Due to the lack of his clothing line in the Bay will likely return and have a look around. Recommend the women who work there since they seem more approachable.

A die hard fan and bearer of a Varvatos wardrobe, I entered the SF store for the first time today. I have had many very positive experiences at the NYC stores. I was a bit put off today when I walked about the store and received nothing but cold shoulders (and certainly no eye contact) from the staff (3 or 4 people and it wasn’t busy). I am fairly convinced it was because I was holding a Macy’s bag! Can’t think of another reason why. I was even sporting some of my Varvatos garb! So I ended up spending a fortune at All Saints next store instead (sorry guys).

Man, this is such a Low rating because the employees were so incredibly stuck up it was unbelievable. It’s not like we were homeless and wandered in the store, we were there to spend OUR money and we were treated like garbage. One man came out of the back room that was next to where you try on shoes, I asked him plainly can we try on a shoe, he completely 100% ignored us and I had to ask him again «hello!?? Do you work here??» And he goes OH SORRY! I thought you were talking to her! (The other woman employee walking out as well). What the hell, guy? I don’t care if I’m talking to both of you, if a customer requires help to purchase an item in your store and you completely ignore that customer, you need to be fired. Bottom line. The woman seemed obviously to be faking her kindness to helping us out. Just, disgusting attitude of the employees. Great shop and aesthetic though, but whoever trains and hires the employees needs to sit down and reevaluate how you treat your customers.

Being an optician, I LOVE john varvatos eyewear and their style. Since I was in San Francisco at Chanel, I decided to just stop in and see the general store itself. The guy that helped me had excellent customer service, and really helped with all my questions I had for my dads Christmas gift. We were trying to figure out what kind of after shaves they had (my dads super picky and he happened to love their scent), and he helped with all the information that I needed. All their products were very near and organized, and I loved how the store looked. This store definitely was up to par with excellent customer service. I will definitely be coming back here more to shop.

I really like John Varvatos shoes and some of the practical pieces. The rock vibe is cool but doesn’t really look right on me. What annoys me about the SF Varvatos store is the staff. Rude and snooty. It was a hot day in San Francisco so I was wearing a nice pair of cargo shorts and sneakers and when you don’t walk in here wearing all black with the silk scarf you get attitude. The two gentlemen that worked there could barely make eye contact. As I left there was a lovely young lady with piercings that did say hi. This place makes me uncomfortable and I would rather get my Varvatos shoes at Bloomingdales or Neiman Marcus.

My first time in a John Varvatos store and it was a good experience.
I loved the rocker vibe — the photographs on the wall of Johnny Cash, The Mamas and the Papas, and Jim Morrison were all at home on the walls. It didn’t hurt that they had great music playing as well.
When we walked in there the SAs were doing their own thing but I managed to get the attention of one. We were looking for roll tab shirts and he brought out some that were perfect — great colors, super comfortable and cool cotton. Love the peace sign Varvatos branding on the chest! I asked that they steam the shirt so that it could be worn out of the store.
We also saw this beautiful blouson jacket that had awesome details: fleur de lys lining inside the jacket and lining on the collar and the cuffs to protect the jacket from wear and tear from being on the skin. We will get that one next time.
SAs were not overly friendly but they weren’t that snobby either so no complaints there.

I’m not a huge Varvatos fan but the store in Union Square is always to stop in. The staff is always very helpful and there is always a good selection of men’s clothes and accessories.

I will start off just to say the security is a jerk. I went there with my mom in our car to buy a gift for a family member. We luckily found a parking spot right infront of the store. As we parked, the security of the store came out and took a picture of our car plates. I found this strange, so I got out if the car and asked him why he took the picture. He made himself the idiot as if he didn’t hear me.
I asked him if it was okay to park there, and he turned around and said he didn’t know. So why would be take pictures then? Because we are Hispanics?. He just went back into the store and ignored us. Of course we got pissed and left. We went there to buy a gift for a loved one. But I didn’t even get into the store without getting pissed off. I don’t know if it’s because we’re Hispanic or not, but I’m definetly never going there again to purchase anything. Because I don’t want my money to go to some jerk.
If it were up to me, I would give no stars at all.

The service or lack thereof; was absolutely horrible.
I entered the store and a salesman was on his iPhone, looked up at me and then went back to his phone without a single «hello».
I was not greeted by anyone as I passed by various salespeople.
This was the ultimate in pretentious, snobby, ill mannered people I’ve encountered in a long time.
I had some Christmas money which I was going to buy myself something nice with… NOT HERE!
These salespeople need to pull their heads out of their self presumed rose smelling butt holes and treat customers with at least an ounce of respect. I can’t leave a review without selecting at least one star which is undeserved; I wish I could give a negative 100 star review of this pathetic place.

As for the brand, the design and look of it is fantastic but the quality is horrible. Anything you buy here will start to fall apart in short order and you will need to have it taken to a tailor and tuned up. But, that said, the clothing looks good (like a high end H&M), and so I put up with it.
The boutique in San Francisco is mediocre; the staff may or may not notice you, and may or may not choose to help you. Sometimes I get great service; they will offer me a beer and treat me like a king. Other times, I struggle to get someone to help me pick out a pair of jeans. Overall, I think you can do better.

We’ve walked by the storefront in the past and have seen some suits that looked pretty damn good. This time we walked in to see what the selection was like. BF found «the suit» to kill all over suits. It was beautiful. He looked so fabulous in it that I gave him a bunch of reason to justify spending almost $-$$$$ on it. That’s right. 4 $$$$ signs. The sales associate gave him a shirt, shoes to see the completed look. He helped measure it out to be tailored and within 4 days it was ready for pick up. The suit bag itself was worth it. Fold over carry handles. Friendly and attentive sales associates. No pressure in buying. We actually left to «think about it» for an hour and came back. A splurge purchase but well worth it to see BF in the amazing suit.

I LOVE John Varvatos. It is hands down my favorite men’s clothing brand. Being 18 and without employment, there are very few JV items that I find myself able to afford. Regardless, whenever I visit Union Square, I make it a point to stop by the store and do a little window shopping. ;) I’m jealous of all of the people who get ignored, especially when they are willing to spend money. I never have money to spend when I’m at the store, so I get a bit uncomfortable when a sales associate asks me if I need anything. Haha. They’re usuallly pretty quick to ask (within 5 minutes of my entrance.)
The store itself is beautiful. The rich wood and semi-​dim lighting set a tranquil mood to the store. The clothes are all out in a way in which it is easy for me to glide through the store and admire their beauty. Little pictures on the walls and books/​magazines on the tables give the store a greater sense of humanity and depth. If you have a crapload of cash and are interested in looking like the ideal «Esquire-​man,» I suggest you shop at John Varvatos.

I love jv. All my casual and formal work shoes are jv. This store is terrible. No matter how often i go in to shop… not one person offers to help. I was looking to buy two new pairs of shoes… so was willing to drop a lot of money. After looking at shoes for 20 mins… you would think someone would come up to me and ask if i needed a size. Not one of the three sales folks bothered. Might i mention that i was the ONLY person in the store!
I took my business across the street and bought two new pairs of jv at neiman marcus. Thats saying a lot when snooty neimans gets my business.

My friend absolutely LOVED this store and so did I.
FINALLY, an ALL MENS boutique clothing store that had all the right components.
Amy, the assistant manager, offered us Fiji water immediately and we knew right then and there, this store meant business.
Most of the pieces were made in Italy. The suits ($ 1700+) were beautifully hand made by an Italian family. My friend fell in love with a dark navy signature suede jacket ($ 2500). Sorry, honey, maybe next time. :)
We enjoyed our shopping experience here and yes, we will return again.
