History

Established in 1970.

The LightHouse was founded in 1902 as a reading room for the blind, and over the last century, has grown into the première provider of programs and services for the blind community. A small store was opened in 1970 to meet the need for accessible products. In 1994, the LightHouse opened its location on Van Ness Avenue and dedicated space to Adaptations — the LightHouse Store. Today, Adaptations offers in-store hours, as well as a full on-line shopping experience.

Meet the Manager

Sam R.

Manager

Sam first joined the LightHouse family when he was 19 and attended Enchanted Hills Camp, our accessible summer camp and retreat for blind and visually impaired youth, adults and seniors. Over the years, Sam returned many times as a camper, counselor-in-training and counselor, gaining a network of blind friends, varied work experience and much more. After college, Sam became a fellow at partner agency National Industries for the Blind in Virginia, where he learned business management and development skills. When an opportunity to join the LightHouse team as our Assistant Director of Business Services and Adaptations Store Manager came up, he jumped at the opportunity to come back to his home state. Sam is the proud father of a one year-old little boy. His wife, whom he met at Enchanted Hills, recently started a blind parents group that meets regularly at the LightHouse.
