I don’t often give 1-​star reviews to businesses, but I had such a bad experience here about a month ago.
Came in here after the gym to pick up some protein for my boyfriend and me. When I walked in, there were about 3 – 4 people sitting down, eating their dinners and chatting away. They looked at me for a second and turned away to continue talking about their protein intake & gym sessions for the day. I was the only customer in the store, but they just completely ignored me. I’ve worked in retail before — I get it, it’s been a long day and you don’t want to fake a smile for a customer. However, it would’ve been nice to at least acknowledge me or welcome me into the store.
I walked around aimlessly for about a minute, as their selection was quite bare. I was about to walk out the store until finally, someone asked if I needed something in particular. I told them I just wanted some simple protein for my boyfriend and I to share. He gave me a recommendation, so I just agreed to get it.
He made a different guy ring me up, and he was like «UGH, fine» (jokingly, but still really rude). While he was ringing me up, he asked the other guy in Vietnamese, «should I reduce the price?» and he shook his head. I HATE confrontation but I really should’ve called them out. I was so angry at myself after buying the protein — I really should’ve taken my business somewhere else.
Never coming back here again.

Wow. I went here to give a local business a chance. Total fail. I walked in and was ignored for about 5 minutes (pretty hard to do as the place is small) before I brought some items to the counter and asked the price (nothing was price tagged) only for them to come back with prices that were between $ 10-​$ 20 higher than anywhere else. Small selection but they did have Isopure protein for about the same price as everyone else. When I went to purchase the protein powder the employees had their take out food all over counter and it seemed that it did not even matter that I was trying to spend money there. They were more concerned with continuing their personal conversation. Then they rang me up for a price $ 20 higher than they had just quoted, to which I said something, the clerk looked confused and looked at the other employee who then said «ring it up for the lower price».
On top of that, they had a check in offer for a free pre-​workout on Unilocal.I showed them the offer to which they gave me a protein powder sample. I said the offer was for a pre-​workout to which they replied they had none.
This place beyond failed at everything, as someone who spends a good chunk of change monthly on supplements, it is sad that I will continue to use Amazon over supporting a local SF business.

Chanh. Enough said. A highly considerate owner and nutrition expert. You will leave with knowledge far worth the slightly higher cost when compared to online retailers. Get the right supplements. Talk to Chanh. Supplements aren’t enough. If you aren’t taking them correctly then you shouldn’t bother taking them at all.

(This review was never posted but i started it in 05⁄2012 and thought it was posted but i am now posting it.)…From the the very first time I walked in here Chanh is very welcoming and very informative. This shop separates itself from the competition with it’s nutrition plan service. This is the only shop i know that lets you sample the product before you buy. Never have once was pressured you into buying products. Chanh would take his time to inform me about the products. He is so honest that even if you are buying something that is on the higher price range he tells you not to buy that if it is not the right product for you. Chanh steers you into getting results through proper nutrition guidelines and using right supplements correctly rather just selling anything to you like the other competition (GNC). I do my own research and never really convinced to buy anything at a nutrition shop but Chanh knows his stuff and i was really surprised at the information i got from him. one time really wanted to buy certain products there and his word were «i would love to take your money but i do not suggest you buy it because it will not give you the results you want… focus on proper eating habits first and then i would suggest to buy it». You see that’s honesty… Bottom line your if looking for a nutrition shop without the B. S come to Max Muscle on Polk.

Consistently cool like their contemporaries.
Like my SJ clan this group is top notch aims to please. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable — they even offered to bring in supplements for ‘locals’ like me if it was something I thought they should shelve. SO glad there is a Max Muscle in the city and happy that the one I found was so awesome, Thanks guys!

I live in the neighborhood, and always passed by without really thinking much of this place. However, once I began taking my training and nutrition seriously I walked into Max Muscle and the rest is history.
Chanh is extremely knowledgeable about nutrition and is always looking out for your well being as a first priority. He is honest, and will do his best to help you reach any goals you have set for yourself. Plus, there is a gym downstairs as well. I can’t say enough about how thankful I am to have met Chanh and his crew at Max Muscle.

Chanh is the absolute best! He really takes the time to find the perfect supps for you, and he also loves giving lifestyle and nutrition advice :) I’ve learnt so much from him; he really knows his stuff. He definitely goes the extra mile, and he’ll make sure you walk out with more knowledge and the right tools to fit your personal goals. He’ll basically give you a nutrition consultation.
Most importantly, and to sum things up, Chanh will look after you. He loves his customers and he cares about helping people out with whatever their goals be.

I realize that fitness nutrition has blossomed into a billion dollar industry in the last decade. And unfortunately much of that revenue is based on taking advantage of the ignorance of the general public regarding the subject of supplementation and diet fads.
But this store, and this location in particular is headed up by a gentleman that is as honest and straightforward as they come. Chan is an awesome guy, and an example of what folks in this industry should exemplify. He doesn’t spout a bunch of sales nonsense and he knows his products, and is honest about what they can and cannot do for you. Add that to the fact that he is happy to let you sample just about anything in the store for free and you have a business that is a model for what retail outlets in this often confusing and dishonest industry should be!

I always come to Max Muscle on polk for all my workout supplements. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable with both your health and fitness needs. It’s always great to go to a store where they want to help you instead of just trying to make a sale. They also let you try some sample to see how you like it. To my surprise, most of the protein shakes are tasty.

I’ve always loved Max Muscle, but my friend and I decided to come to this location because we heard it just opened.
Let’s just say that in addition to the great products we’re accustomed to, the manager, QC Pham, was COMPLETELY helpful and accommodating.
My friend and I work for a non-​profit agency that works directly with the A&PI LGBTQ community, and he offered to cross promote and donate money to our programs and cause.
A company that offers great products at affordable prices AND gets involved with the community gets thumbs up in my books.

I first heard about this place on public radio because Chanh Pham was being interviewed about deer antler velvet and some other supplements. He sounded not only informed but like he had a great sense of humor and good energy. So I went in and he was working, I recognized his voice and his friendly sense of humor. I purchased a few Goos for running. He gave me a sample of chocolate protein powder with a nice cup that you can use to shake it up with. Delicious! I just drank it up. I’ll go back here for sure. As a a woman I feel so comfortable here and not like I walked into the wrong store like at some other sports nutrition stores where they look at me like I am crazy. Thanks Chanh!

This newly opened Max Muscle is clean and spacious. The owner QC is super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. He helps me with what I need to ensure that I am healthy. He does not push me to buy, and his service is excellent. He also gives advice on what is needed to be done so that the product I buy will function at it’s fullest potential.
I bought a strawberry protein shake. It doesn’t taste chalky like the other protein shakes I’ve bought before. It’s actually quite yummy! I take it after my daily exercise.
Women, if you need supplements, protein shakes, etc, whatever it is that you need, this is the place to go. You will not feel uncomfortable here. I have seen customers come in greeting QC as if he’s their neighborhood friend. He’s approachable, will make you feel at ease when you come into the store, and help you with whatever you need. They also price match. :)
Only thing I say is a con is the parking. Other than that, this place is great!

Nice clean store, good service, and interesting products. Their brand is significantly more expensive so it’s taking me a while to try their stuff out and I’ve never heard of their brand before so it will take a bit. I like the feel of this store, the nutritionists usually have a good angle on supplementation and aren’t overly pushy (sorry GNC, I love you guys but damn). Curious to see what happens with GNC and Vitaminshoppe around the corner. I wish you guys luck.
