Michael Woo – State Farm Insurance Agent

**This is not Michael Woo’s office — I never actually spoke with him*** I called about getting a renter’s insurance policy, and never actually spoke with Michael, but got a call back from one of his staffers — Carly. She was generally responsive with my questions and in getting me a quote for a policy that I liked. When I asked for the paperwork to buy the policy, she said they would be in the mail. Over 2 months passed and I didn’t receive anything. I emailed her to ask about the paperwork and got no response. I emailed again about a month later — no response. And then I got a letter in the mail stating my insurance policy had been cancelled because I had not completed supporting documents… which I had never received — even after numerous attempts to communicate with Carly that I hadn’t received the paperwork. After reading through the letter, I was impressed it reached me at all — Carly had gotten my address wrong!
I was calling for renter’s insurance. The single most important thing is my address and she had gotten it wrong.

I’ve had renters insurance through Michael for the last several years, and this year was the year I had to use it. I was displaced in a major fire, and so far I’ve spent more money than I have in relocation costs – which of course are being covered by State Farm. So yes, you should definitely get renters insurance. But more importantly, this process would have been way more difficult if I didn’t have renters insurance through Michael. He called me the day after the fire to give me a cash advance and some absolutely critical advice on how to move forward. Since then, he’s been constantly helpful, responsive, and an excellent advocate for me. This goes above and beyond what most insurance agents do. So get renters insurance, and get it through Michael.

I’ve had «relationships» with a number of insurance carriers over the past many decades of living in San Francisco. Insurance is one of those expenses you hate cutting checks for, *until* something happens and you find yourself needing help.
Like many near commodity services, the difference between carriers is less obvious to those of us on the retail side of the game, than the servicing AGENTS. Michael Woo understands insurance, and understand the value of YOUR time. He’ll listen, he’ll make suggestions, he’ll not under/​over sell you, and if you need help/​assistance with claims, he’s right there.

I’ve been with Michael for about a decade now. He and his staff have always been thorough, professional and kind in their service. I recently put a contacted his office for a claim and they put it through and got everything rolling straight away. The thing I like best about Michael and his team is that I know they will go to bat for me in any way they can. It also feels great to be backed up by such a reputable company, like State Farm.

Michael has gone above-​and-​beyond for years for my family. If he’s limited, it’s State Farm, which doesn’t cover everything and doesn’t broker insurance from other providers– even there, SF covered my old house which others wouldn’t, and that’s how I ended up working with Michael.

I walked into this office because we were unhappy with our current State Farm agent who fails to return our calls and email inquiries in a timely manner. First off, the calendar in their wait room is February 2013 — ummm, it AUGUST. Next, the woman in the office says she can’t help me because I haven’t been released from my current agent– WHAT??? Since when do we need to be released when we are unhappy with our lack of customer service? Oh, because you don’t have any customer service either. And to top it all off, she had the audacity to tell me she didn’t like me. Well guess what lady, I don’t like you, or the company you for. I hope your boss, Michael Woo reads this and fires you.

To be fair, we have never met Michael in person and his assistant Ali was very nice to us… however, we haven’t been happy with the way Michael has treated us thus far.
Before we went on an international trip we decided to get renter’s insurance so that we could insure our personal belongings as well as the belongings in our house in case something were to happen.
We asked Michael if we could cover our mobile phones (iPhones) under our insurance and his answer was a very short, «No». We continued to persist to understand why and he kept replying, «The answer is no.» — instead of giving us an explanation. At one point in an email he said something to the effect of, «The answer is no. I’m not sure how many times I need to repeat myself.».
We decided to call a different State Farm insurance agency to try and get the answers and they were more than happy to explain it to us — the first time we asked. iPhones were too high risk to insure (as people lose their phones *conveniently* when a new iPhone comes out). Okay, fair enough — that is TOTALLY understandable and we were perfectly fine with that answer and didn’t push it.
Good news is, nothing happened to our phones. At least nothing that wasn’t fixable.
I really wish Michael had explained that to us instead of being short with us, unhelpful, and sometimes even down-​right rude. We decided after that incident with him, to transfer to the other agency that was happy to explain it to us over the phone.
At one point one of Michael’s agents contacted us about our policy, in which Michael replied, «Client has switched to (other agent), you can stop communications.». Sure, it doesn’t sound rude, but did he really need to CC us onto that email? A bit passive aggressive.
To be honest, it’s really hard to get context over text based communication, but we have never in our lives experienced something like this. We even tried calling to talk to him and he refused to answer our calls. Maybe that was just a coincidence.

I and my family have had our insurance with Michael and his father for over 30 years! We stay because their service is superb. Knowledgeable, friendly, professional and reliable are the words I would use for everyone in the office. When I got married, my husband wanted to move our insurance elsewhere, but after a couple of claims, he’s a fan too! Michael and his team are always helpful, get back to you when they say they will (HUGE pet peeve of mine when service professionals don’t follow-​up!), and are really nice! I definitely recommend Michael, Ali, and the whole team!

Michael and Ali are great!!! Always so helpful and prompt when answering questions. I have my home/​auto/​misc insurance through them… love it.

I’ve worked with Michael and Ali for 6 years now. They’ve seen me and my insurance needs through two moves, a home purchase, a marriage, and several vehicle additions.
I highly recommend them. You cannot get better quality of service for the price. They are always responsive, via e-​mail or phone, and have the great patience to put up with my endless questions. They’re not at all pushy about sales either, and always think about what’s best for the customer over making a buck.
Overall, my only complaint with State Farm is that I’ve had trouble using their website. As a software engineer, the ability to update mileage and pay bills online would be a huge convenience, but that’s not Michael or Ali’s fault. They’re so good, that even someone like me is willing to give up such online conveniences.

Michael and his team have always been very professional and polite. I contacted Michael in 2006 for a car insurance policy and used him again for renter’s insurance. Michael and Ali helped me with a claim and were very supportive and understanding. They’ve also been great about keeping me up to date with the latest technology that help you to pay bills and find your policy info.

Insurance agents are people you want to know, need to know, pay every year, but HOPEFULLY never have to call…
I recently had a broken water pipe incident inside my house (ugh) and so started the process of calling Michael to say «I need help…» While the last few weeks/​month have been very stressful because of the mess that was caused, Michael was there with me side by side, helping the entire way. I couldn’t be happier with Michael Woo as my agent! I have both automobile and renter’s insurance, and have been with State Farm for almost ten years. I have been involved in three automobile accidents (two of which I was not at fault, and the other was, unfortunately). Michael’s office was incredibly understanding, patient, and helpful with every question that I had through the claims and repair process. I have always felt very well taken care of with Michael.
I find myself calling with questions several times per year, and I am always surprised how comfortable I feel speaking with Michael or his associates. As if things haven’t been good enough, Michael always seems to find ways that I can lower my monthly premium or make changes to my policy that will serve me better.
I can’t speak highly enough about Michael Woo and his staff. If you don’t feel as happy or taken care of by your insurance as I do, then it’s time to give him a call!

My wife and I have been with Michael Woo’s office for around six years now and we’ve been very happy with his attention to our needs. Though we haven’t chosen State Farm for ALL of our insurance needs, we do use them for our car and rental insurance and, for the most part, it’s been a terrific no hassle experience.
The only downside we’ve experienced happened rather recently (but its a happy ending, so keep reading!!!), and even then, Michael went completely out of his way to rectify the situation, ultimately changing a big part of the process that his office delivers help to people like us during a time of crisis. The phone system had some issues while the office was closed leaving me and my family hunting for help in a serious time of need while out of town. In the end, State Farm came through and Michael immediately began to follow up with me to ensure that significant changes were made to the phone system to prevent this from ever happening to anyone else. Our experience ultimately improved the service that everyone else will receive because of Michael focus on the matter after the fact. He has been extremely attentive to our frustrations and that kind of attention is exactly what makes Michael good at what he does.

I have been using Michael Woo for about 10 years for my auto, homeowners, renters, motorcycle and umbrella policies. He also manages my life insurance. Recently my motorcycle was involved in a hit and run. Fortunately the bike was parked and no one was on it. After it was reported to State Farm I was immediately contacted by the claims department. The damage was assessed and I had a check in a very short amount of time.

Michael has been my State Farm agent for many years. His staff looks out for me and nudges me when I procrastinate in renewing my policies, much to my benefit and not at all overbearing. Now that my mother isn’t around to do the job, Michael’s staff is there to help me stay on top of those little details that could cost thousands if left to my own. ;-)
I get nicely personalized service and plenty of attention when I ask for help. They paid a claim of mine a couple years ago with much greater ease than I expected, which was enormously comforting given the stress of the accident. Michael and his staff were there to help me every step of the way and didn’t just leave it all to some 800 number for help.
I was a wayward client for a couple of years trying other insurance companies, but none were as thorough and able to care for my needs as Michael’s office. I’m back to stay and Michael’s staff look out for me and my best interests every step of the way. You can’t go wrong.

After two consecutive house fires within two blocks of my apartment, it dawned on me that I should get renter’s insurance ASAP. Losing all of my belongings in a house fire would be tragic and leave me naked and
broke. Someone suggested getting renter’s insurance through my auto insurance company, however the quote that I got from the Gecko was just way too high; I am only insuring one bedroom in a flat, not an entire house or grand piano.
I went online to State Farm and within ten minutes I submitted my information for a quote. 24 hours later, I had an email in my inbox from Michael Woo’s assistant with my quote — which was about $ 60 less than the Gecko’s quote! I guessed the year my house was built in my original estimate because I am clueless about outer richmond architectural history and my landlord didn’t know. I expressed this to State Farm and the underwriters did the research for me and corrected my quote.
From there I had a brief, 5 minute conversation where I confirmed the quote and gave them my CC info.
Done. I am covered for an entire year against theft, fire, the crazy cat people who live above me, and anything else that falls underneath my policy.
The best part is– I never had to leave my desk and voila! I’m insured!
