I’m in Suzanne’s chair as I type this and feel like the luckiest person in the world. I’m not surprised at all that this place has 5 stars because they really are perfect here. Getting tattoo work is (for me) only 50% about the end result. I need to feel safe and also really enjoy the people who are working on me. You can take your time at this space and ALSO be confident you’re getting the best work in SF. Everyone who works here loves what they do and it shows. Modern Electric is a beacon of hope for this city. They’re a staple and if you’re lucky enough to get time with them, do!

Had a great experience getting my first tattoo at Modern Electric, by Suzanne! I did some research on studios in SF and decided to contact Suzanne. She’s a professional artist, gentle and very friendly (but not over social). I am very happy with the result, healing and I can highly recommend this place!

I’m all about sharing wonderful experiences with deserving people on forums like these so let’s talk about Tanya. I heard about her from my business partner who has had some work done with her before. We scheduled an appt and after a very thorough consultation we began my piece. I had wanted to do this cover up for a few years but the ribs are a notoriously painful spot and generally a cover up needs more space and a lot of shading so I was procrastinating. One thing I noticed right away was that Tanya’s work was all by hand where I had experienced previous artists print and stencil. Tanya totally understood my vision and executed it beautifully. I had never gotten a tattoo by myself before (full disclosure I’m a huge wimp and in the past have made my husband go with me to hold my hand). Tanya made me feel comfortable instantly and though i wouldn’t describe my feelings as butterflies and rainbows it was as easy as it was ever going to be. I only found out that she had won the award for best of the bay near the end of my appointment but I wasn’t at all surprised. I will absolutely go back to her for any future work and will recommend her to anyone that asks.

I came to Modern Electric through word of mouth, after one of my regular customers mentioned a couple pieces she had done by Tanya Wischerath, one of the lovely ladies who tattoos there. I was instantly blown away by the intricacy of each tattoo that she had, and knew I wanted to go to Modern Electric for my next tattoo
I went into the shop first to check out the vibe and view portfolio work for Tanya, and was so so pleased with everything. I was initially interested in Tanya for her line work and soft touch, and quickly fell in love with her versatility as well. the studio is super homey, full of art and true artists who really love what they do. I made an appointment with Tanya easily, right there and then, for a consultation on a custom tattoo. Tanya was really communicative and open to all ideas I had and had no problem changing up the design to fit a different part of my body when I changed my mind last minute. she works quickly, and seriously has the most gentle touch. I was basically sleeping the entire time… which is great

I saw Tanya a couple weeks ago for a small tattoo on my side. I came here because it had the best reviews and I wanted someone who could do something with really fine lines. I’m so happy I came here! Most artists aren’t very good at doing fine lines and urge you do something thicker, but Tanya does incredible line work. She did a beautiful job and I’ve been getting a lot of compliments and three people have already asked for her name and studio. Not only is she incredibly skilled, but she was very quick. The whole ordeal took less than half an hour. I would recommend her to anyone. Beautiful artist, very quick, and very reasonably priced!

I think it’s pretty funny that my tattoo was virtually gone, I mean GONE within a month! It’s not Tayna’s fault, but I’m here to tell you, if you are a runner, do not get a tattoo on the side of your foot!!! I got a tattoo because I wanted to experience getting one, I should have put it out to the universe that I wanted to keep it! HA!!!

Tanya was amazing! Warm, patient, laid back, she put us at ease immediately. I got a tattoo with my best friend, and she worked with us to schedule us together, but we did different variations. The studio is covered in beautiful art and plants, and feels unique, creative and comfortable. Even though mine was partly on my ribs, the pain was fine. I have no doubt this has something to do with her. Although it didn’t feel rushed, we were both done in 1.5 hrs. She is just great! A wonderful artist. I LOVE it, and now wouldn’t want to go to anyone else :-)

So my experience with Modern Electric Studio has been the best experience ever. Tanya is the sweetest person, very enthusiastic, playful, passionate, and is SO amazingly talented. I’m just glad I found the perfect person and place for my first tattoo. Tanya easily understood how to convey the dark and mystical undertones I wished my tattoo to have, and implemented them with such grace and refinement. She also had some very vital suggestions when we were fleshing to whole thing out. This woman knows ART, and puts MAGIC in her tattoos! Best you believe! Whenever I look down at my arm I’m filled appreciation. Thank you so much Tanya! You are incredible!

I often hear many artists say it takes two people to create a magnificent tattoo, this wasn’t the case for me (It was all Tanya). I first started exchanging emails with Tanya to schedule in my consultation appointment and to explain my idea, and by the time we met for consultation, she had already gathered some references and had even prepared some rough sketches for me. I became instantly happy after glancing at her sketches and loved the direction that she went into. Tanya’s raw talent instantly blew my mind, and was able to translate my vision into reality. She is truly a perceptive and gifted artist.
«She nailed it!» — I thought to myself. I then ceased my search for other artists and scheduled in my sessions right then and there. I had a rough idea of what I wanted at first, but couldn’t quite fully imagine a finished design by myself. But after meeting again for our first session, Tanya’s final design helped me envision the missing pieces to the puzzle, and I went for it. (Don’t forget the $ 100 security deposit & your references)
The MES studio is a fun place hang out at, everyone is extraordinarily friendly, truly an artist’s atelier; where easels are laying everywhere, smooth music playing throughout, all filled with remarkable paintings of their personal art collection on display across the walls. The best part was their cute dog Maggie; who’s just adorable and just chills about the studio often asking for free massages.
Tanya on the other hand is a bona-​fide sweetheart, a «kill-​em’ with kindness» kind of girl, a super-​chill artistic genius. But most of all, she’s tremendously understanding and she really takes in your feedback into her re-​designs. Not to mention that she’s a rockin’ babe!
I had plans to move out of the country for work, so I really wanted to get a piece done before my move. As my idea required at least 3 sessions, initially no one was willing to pencil me in within a 1 month time frame. But Tanya took me in, and happily opened her schedule up for me. She was able to finish my project in just Two, 3-​hour sessions. (1^st session: line work, 2^nd sessions: shading)
On my left arm, Tanya’s virtuoso as a serious tattoo artist is on full display and I’m proud to exhibit her work, proving to me that her craftsmanship had steered my project to the direction I was looking for. I am exceptionally happy and truly grateful to have gone through this experience with her and I will be definitely coming back again to work on a future project.

I had been envisioning this tattoo for several years and it turned out even better than I had hoped!

I finally did it. After years of thinking about it, I decided to just go for it and get my first tattoo. I had a work meeting in SF this past Friday (⁵⁄₁₀) and was done for the day at 11am, so I figured, what better time? Super good decision!
After reading the excellent reviews here and looking through the uploaded photos, I felt very comfortable contacting Suzanne regarding my tattoo idea. I contacted her on Wednesday 5/​8, hoping to schedule an appointment for Friday. And she had room for me at 11:30, couldn’t have worked out better! I told her the quote I wanted («In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.») and she asked me to bring it typed up in some fonts I liked. I spent a looooot of time looking at fonts, and ended up going with one of the first fonts I found. Go figure.
The parking is readily available, but metered, and there’s a 2-​hour max on the meters. So, if you have a long session ahead of you, remember to feed the meter! I got there right at 11:30 and Suzanne and I got started right away. I immediately felt comfortable. The art hanging over all the walls is amazing — be prepared for paintings of naked people surrounding you while you’re tattooed. So maybe a little jarring for some, but I thought they were exquisite. Made me feel even better about being there.
Suzanne herself was wonderful as well. She put me at ease and talked easily with me for a lot of the time, although we also fell into a companionable silence at times as well. I say that because some people don’t do well with silence and try to fill it, but Suzanne isn’t that way and I was grateful for that. I found the tattoo process really meditative, so I didn’t feel the need to speak the entire time.
I’ll upload a photo when I get a sec, but I couldn’t be happier with the finished product. Suzanne did a beautiful job with the lettering, and she also helped me decide on the placement (it’s over my right hip, split into three lines). It’s all perfect. Every time I see it I smile. :) When I’m ready for #2, I’ll be back to see Suzanne for sure!

Tanya was awesome. The lettering she did looks lovely, the lines are delicate and clean, and it healed up beautifully in about 7 days.

I just got a tattoo two weeks ago from Tanya. I told her a brief description of what I wanted and she drew out a custom design for me. I was a little hesitant to explain that it wasn’t exactly what I wanted but it is my body so I went for it. I described the emotional side of what I was looking for and gave her more physical descriptive detail. I came in the next day for my tattoo to see the most beautiful design perfect for me. It was exactly what I was looking for in a curvy, dominant, femme Queen of Cups! It took only 2 ½ hours to tattoo me and the blend to my tattoo above was precise and perfect. I could not be more pleased with the end result. I constantly am getting comments from everyone I see about how beautiful the work is. I would go back to Modern Electric Studio in San Francisco in a heart beat and I live all the way in Brooklyn, New York.
It is a chill atmosphere with amazing art work on the wall and a peaceful vibe. Prices are completely reasonable and Tanya is fantastic! I recommend MES 100%!!!

All my friends had it and I knew I had to too. I’d seen designs that ranged from objects to portraits of wildlife and went to Tanya with an idea that combined both those things with a side of pork.
She worked with me on a custom design that included tons of feedback from me, vision from her and resulted in exactly the tattoo i’d wanted. Her touch was as light as a feather (or a ghost?) during the tattoo which is saying something given that it was done in a pretty sensitive spot. Now, almost a month out my tattoo has healed perfectly and I continue to be told by many people that it’s one of their favorite tattoos they’ve seen.

Just like all of my friends get their hair cut by Dionne at Pretty Pretty Collective, apparently all of my closest mates get their tattoos done by Suzanne at Modern Electric.
I’m madly in love with the horse/​EKG piece she Sharpie-​ed directly onto my inner arm, she inked beautiful fine art-​y redwood trees onto my husband’s arm and did a dumbfoundingly intricate pointillism floral tattoo on a friend’s shoulder. The lady is no one-​trick pony when it comes to styles. Added bonus: she has an incredibly light hand.
This is my second tattoo and I was searching for someone to counterbalance the production line-​type experience I had at Everlasting with my first one. I found it. A seriously fun way to spend an hour or three.
Make sure you ask her the most unusual place she’s ever tattooed someone.

search search search. This was what I did for a while. I can’t actually remember how I came across Suzanne, but I’m glad I found her. I brought in this illustrator file filled with lots of straight mechanical lines and circles. Some might say a nightmare piece. She says «cool!» and not «um… you sure you want to do this?» SOLD!!!
Her line work is tops and you should see how consistent she is with her blacks. Perfect.
I say, find someone who appears to be into the tattoo you want. The outcome will be some much better when it feels like a partnership and not someone who is just doing their job.
Suzanne did an absolutely amazing job on my Hasselblad 503 tattoo and I will not hesitant one second to go back to her if I decide to get anything else.
