MUNI – 2 Clement

Remember when this was a good route, even a route worth waiting for? When the route extended all the way out to the high-​numbered avenues?
Since they reduced that route to the Park Presidio terminal, it’s just horrible. To begin:
It stops running around 7:50pm on weekdays. WTF
It takes forever and ever and ever to arrive, in either direction. So unreliable!
It makes too many stops.
It doesn’t go far enough to be truly useful. It needs to return to its original full route, like the 1 California.
It needs to increase its frequency, like the 1 California.
Not a fan. You’re really better off walking (also faster), if that’s an option for you.

I’m on the 2 right now and am regretting not taking the 38 instead. This is the slowest way to get from downtown to the Richmond. I’m pretty sure it’s the bus driver’s mission to make everyone as late as possible. Also the bus driver seems to think that «green light» means «slow down.» Thank you for your service. A+ at your job, sir.

She’s the mild-​mannered cousin of the 38, and the quiet neighbor of the 1. The 2-​Clement is the firm-​handshake, good dancer, boring conversationalist you meet at the party; the one who always seems to catch your eye. She’ll take you where you need to go, but be careful, you’ll go it slow. Ain’t going to be many other folk who are looking for her, so you’ll always find space in her schedule. Catch her early, because she goes to bed at 7:30, but she’ll be take you on dates from the Richmond, through the Fillmore and Japantown, and even to Union Square and the Ferry Building. Steadfast and loyal, the 2-​Clement will take you where you need to go.
Some day, when I settle down, I’ll probably marry a woman like the 2-​Clement. Right now, she’s A-​OK.

With the prices now $ 2.25 one way since September 1, 2014, it’s now time for Muni management to inform their operators to start issuing 3 hour limit transfers instead of the usual 2 hour limit. Why not? It’s only fair.
Just as I board the «2 Clement» this morning at 9:20, I noticed that my expiration on the Muni transfer was 11:00AM, thus giving me LESS than 2 hours of making errands before heading back home. I asked politely if I could have a different transfer that would give me 2 hours, yet the driver looked at my transfer and said «No, it’s the right time.» I got off the bus with no complaints aimed towards the bus driver.
If Muni management can add a quarter into their pockets, they could at least add an extra hour upon their Muni transfers for those of us making ends meet within this city. It’s only fair.

Bus drivers that won’t open their doors 3 minutes before take-​off time and make 2 ladies wait outside in the cold can kiss my ass.

from a Singaporean standpoint I must say «Sibbei slow lah». The good news is that it is not always full during the weekend at 4:00pm. When I took it there was only an old lady and a driver who was minding her own business. If I missed the bus after eating than it would be late. I say it is slow because it took me 2 hours to go to Uniqlo in SF. Second of all it is not better than the SBS in Singapore.

This bus comes every 30 minutes or so. However, it’s a smaller bus and is packed most of the time. If you’re coming from Pac Heights, you should probably take the 3 instead. If you’re coming from Clement, you should take the 38 variations since they run more frequently and have longer buses.

This bus line takes about 5 – 6 minutes longer than your 1 or 38 line getting downtown; but it’s far less packed for the first 10 stops than either of those routes. If you’re willing to wait the extra time then it’s a good clean line that will get you there.
Tip: Sit in the back to avoid getting bumped out of the front seats by the old folks (they file in around Japantown) if you’re riding in the middle or the day.

While I’m by no means a seasoned MUNI rider who’s taken many different lines, I DID take this bus to work for months. For those who take BART, it’s very convenient as it has stops close to Montgomery and Embarcadero stations, and it also passes through Union Square and Japantown. It was hardly ever crowded during morning commute hours, although in the afternoons from 3pm onwards it would fill up.
I do think this is one of the safer and cleaner (less smelly) MUNI lines and most of the drivers weren’t mean; many would actually greet me after I became a regular (this is what the 1 star is for). But I HAVE seen passengers get into arguments and yell at each other and crazies while on the bus. I also had one EXTREMELY traumatizing encounter on this line that I had to call and report to police. Ever since that happened, I stopped taking MUNI and I continue to try to avoid it at all costs. Oh, and using the NextMUNI website has proven to be unreliable sometimes, it would say a bus is coming and then it would NEVER show up… I waited nearly an hour for a bus to arrive before.
MUNI=last resort and just plain dirty, shady, and a disappointment to a renowned city like San Francisco. If you MUST take it, keep your wits about you… and may your commute be less miserable than mine were when I was on MUNI.

Last resort only. This bus sucks, goes really slow and is a waste of time unless your departure and arrival location are less than a one minute walk from a stop.

The 2 Clement is a very good alternative. Getting a seat is easy upon getting on this bus. There has not been a time when buses on this route showed completely filled. This is certainly one good thing about this route. Also, it is quiet so catching up on some reading is easy. Overall, very good experiences on this route. If you are headed downtown from the Richmond District, then the 2 Clement is also your answer.
2 Clement to Ferry Plaza

Horrendous! Absolutely one of the worst lines in the city.
Why? IT TAKES FOREEEEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEERRRRRRR!
In example, tonight I was in the Union Square area, caught the 2 because I didn’t want to ride the 38 and all of its madness, hoping that 2 would be a breezier, quieter alternative.
Getting off at Clement and Arguello, FORTY (read 40) minutes later, having never gotten a seat, this bus is not for me. It should not take 40 fucking minutes to go what, 3 miles? And does the bus really need to stop at EVERY block?! In one case, there was 2 stops on one block.

The one star that this MUNI line is receiving is for being the quickest route from my old apartment to my old job. It picked me up literally in front of my house and dropped me off just across the street from my office.
Here is why it has no additional stars: When I regularly took this bus, a man who I referred to as «the bus creeper» also regularly took this bus. He would sit across from me and try to look up my skirt, walk behind me as I got off the bus and try to rub up against me, and generally leer at me the entire ride. One day I had had enough and let the bus driver know that there was a many sexually harassing me on the bus. His response? «What do you want me to do about it?» Hello? I am a young woman coming to you clearly asking for help with a situation that I have not been able to remedy on my own. Also, as the bus driver you have the power to tell him to get off the bus. I was very upset about this and called MUNI to report this incident, and never heard back from them. I have also encountered NUMEROUS fights on this bus line that were not only passenger on passenger, but bus driver on passenger.
I am happy that I no longer need to take the 2 Clement to get to work.

First, its funny that people are on Unilocal reviewing the 2 busline. Second, since I’ve been riding the 2 for 3 years it seems like I should chime in. I don’t live in the richmond, but I’m guessing that area needs as many buses as possible going out there, it’s not like the cabs are circling geary and 32^nd street, or take any haste going out there for pick ups.
The 2 is very unpredictable but I take it to work and back during commute hours and the fact that it goes deep into downtown is awesome. The 1 California is INSANELY slow, the 38 has it’s weird people, and the BXs come 2 at a time with 20 minute spaces in between (½ the time). The 2 is clean, fast enough, and has very few dirty/​smelly/​loud people.

rode the 2 more than usual this past week, having to deal with the IRD every afternoon on weds, thurs, fri. Nice drivers on the o/​b leg from FiDi, and they motor on an as needed basis. took a bit longer than the 38L, but I never had any of the «bad» issues that regularly occur on the 38 lines.
I almost got off a couple times just because I knew another one would be by in 20 mins time, the right amount to explore a bit of pac heights or j town.

Sure it doesn’t come frequently but it’s always a smooth ride and not very crowded. I wish all lines were like the #2.

I don’t understand why there’s so little love for the 2. It’s way less crowded and sketchy than the 38, it doesn’t stop every half block, AND the drivers tend to drive like the back of the bus is on fire and they’re trying to go faster to put it out.
Also, a TRANSFER is not a «bus pass» and if you are using an expired one it is the same thing as riding without paying. Incidentally, if you are STILL ON the bus when your transfer expires that is also the same thing as riding without paying. $ 2 gets you 90 minutes of glorious MUNI rides in any direction. You don’t like it, don’t ride, but don’t steal either.

I was kicked off a bus today .

My bus pass was expired. By an hour.
Really? Bus passes expire? So it’s 2 bucks to ride the bus one way — once a day?
COMON’ MUNI give a girl a BREAK! We all work hard to pay our way in this city… any reason you feel the need to make it harder?
And I’m a good bus rider! I don’t make scary scenes, don’t talk loudly on my cell phone, and don’t spill my stuff all over the seats. Why wouldn’t you want a passive passenger like me?
The upgraded 2 dollars amount is fine… as long as I can ride the bus that day at ANY time. Have mercy MUNI — expiration times are SO unkind!

I’m glad I got to ride the 2 before it officially becomes extinct next summer as part of Muni’s TEP.
I didn’t ride the entire length of the line, but it did get me from where I was to where I needed to go hassle-​free, which is all one can really expect from a boring Muni line like the 2. I can understand why it’s redundant, but it is nice to have a bus actually on Clement Street, right?

Until recently, I questioned the very existence of this line. If you like to wait for a bus that few people believe actually exists and you don’t mind being steeped in the aroma of ethnic foods on your way from point A to point B, this just may be the busline for you. But if you’re me, you take the 38 Geary or 1 California when you have to get from the Richmond to the Financial District.
1 point. For if you are gifted with the patience of Mother Teresa, you will be rewarded with a bus far less crowded than the 1 or the 38 when that mythical #2 finally arrives. Be warned: it really starts to stink of curries, chow meins, chow funs, fishiness, and strange sauces in there by 6^th Avenue or so. This is apparently a popular neighborhood for asian take-​out. While I love me some takeout, I do not wish to smell like it.
