New Moon

Randomly dropped by for a late lunch just now with my wife. We’re on holiday from Malaysia and decided to try the San Francisco version of «siew lap».
Portions were huge, as you’re apt to expect from a US restaurant, and the waitress was friendly. I had the roast duck and roast pork, while my wife had noodles.
Overall, a very nice experience for us.

When my group picked out this restaurant we saw that it closes at 7. We’ve all worked in food service before and don’t like being annoying customers, so when we realized we wouldn’t get there until 6, we picked out our items ahead of time from the online menu so we’d be quick.
As soon as we sat down, the waitress informed us they’d be closing at 6:40. Okay, no problem, we knew what we wanted. We told her we wanted the dinner combo A. She said no, we don’t serve that this late. Uh, okay. Dinner combo B? Nope, not serving that either. She grabbed our menus out of our hands and pointed to the only combo we could order. We hadn’t seen this part of the menu before and asked for a second to figure out our choices. Instead of giving us a second, she stood there and glared at us. My friend tried to quickly choose a couple of items. «We’re not serving those this late.» We finally just left without ordering.
TL;DR do not be deceived by the title «restaurant» because apparently, they do not serve food.

The extensive selection of roasted and barbeque items as well as approximately twelve trays of deli entrees makes New Moon the hands-​down winner in terms of selection and choices for a deli in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
If you decide to dine-​in, they have an extensive menu as well as Daily and Summer Specials too. The wait staff is friendly and welcomes you as you enter the dining area and thanks you when you leave. They will make the effort to assist non-​Chinese speaking customers in ordering too. For those that frequent Chinatown, you know service is not a norm.
Did I mention free Wi-​Fi? You get free Wi-​Fi while dining here too! For a small establishment like New Moon, that is a pretty nice perk. Free Wi-​Fi is something that you’ll likely not find elsewhere in Chinatown or in fact a lot of other dining establishments in San Francisco as well.
New Moon… still my go to place for Chinese deli foods and no-​nonsense Cantonese cuisine.

I’m a picky Cantonese eater, when I get roast duck I get the leg, and when it comes to roast pork I want the belly. In other words, I eat the best parts! This place is one of the best Cantonese rotisseries in Chinatown! What’s more the staff is cool too, the lady that serves you actually smiles and answers your requests, what! Unheard of in this part of the town! And they have free wifi, yep, you heard right, a little hole in the wall place on Stockton street in Chinatown that sells greasy good roasted meats has free wifi. Mind. Blown.

A friend told me about this deli/​restaurant and touted their ox tail stew as a better one. While walking to work after a stop at Walgreen’s, I came in and ordered a pound and a half to take home for dinner on a recent Monday (). After a late dinner plan change, I ended up cooking sukiyaki in the Inner Sunset.
Remembering my morning purchase, I gnawed on a piece when I got home to «try while fresh». Sadly, the meat clung firmly to the bone.
A few days later, this proved me wise as the remaining ox tail, carrots, and sauce simmered in a pot for another hour. My criticisms are the sauce is cloyingly sweet (mixture of sugar and five spice flavors) and the butcher did not use a sharp knife in chopping (numerous bone fragments). Apparently, the price rose recently to $ 7.50 per lb., on a par with some premium cuts of beef.
My favorites for ox tail are still Pacific Court in Chinatown but it’s only available Mondays and Fridays. Perhaps their other offerings are better… hopefully.

from outside it looks like a small hot deli, the restaurant inside is very small, not the kind of place to bring your family, not enough room for that. I ordered a rice plate with two items, on the wall it was priced at $ 7 but when I ordered to eat there the prices was more, with a soda it was $ 11, but they serve it on a plate and include a small bowl of soup, so it’s worth the higher price to eat there, they had all the popular Chinese dishes, but they serve more of the authentic home style dishes like the inards, the beef tripe, pig’s feet, lamb stew, pork blood, pig skin, pig’s snout in soy sauce, intestines, etc
I thought the food was pretty good, Ive been here many times, but I mostly order deli items to go, the service was excellent.

just went there yesterday they seem to be cutting back on the flavor got my usual 2 in fact of the sam see chow mein humm… maybe new cook or different cook don’t know don’t know about the other dishes but still the same amout of bbq pork, mushroom and chicken still the same
that’s good.

Me and my fiancée were on our first trip to Chinatown and we were looking for a place to eat. We passed by this place and saw all the good food on display by the window. My fiancée says to me «let’s eat here» so we went in. It’s kind of small in there but boy is it good. They have a special and I spent under $ 20 for both of us. The people working there are pretty nice. 5 stars. I will be going back next time I am in Chinatown!!!

3.5 STARS. I’m not quite a fan yet but it looks promising.
Their Cha Siu (barbecued pork) looks good but it ain’t.
They didn’t cook it at the right temperature where the fat renders out and softens.
Or maybe it was a very bad cut of pork because the fat was dense and chewy.
The Cha Siu had good color but the flavor was flat. No pop.
I got two types of chicken wings and both are recommended.
Soy sauce wings were juicy, abit sweet and lightly salty. Still good when they cool off.
Deep Fried wings with jalapenos is yummy when still hot. They lose alot when they cool off.
This is a «GO TO» place for wings.

Tiny hole-​in-​the-​wall Cantonese style restaurant located in the middle of Chinatown on Stockton St. We first noticed this place because of all the BBQ meats and other goodies they have on display in the window. Although there is limited seating because of the size of this place, the food and service was very good. We ordered a couple items from the window as side dishes (beef tripe and soy sauce marinated wings) as well as duck/​rice and BBQ pork/​rice combos. You can order anything from the window by the pound if you’re taking it with you, or you can dine in and choose from small, medium or larger size orders (we were confused about this when ordering and thought we had to order by the pound). We ordered so much food that we couldn’t finish it all and felt bad not taking anything to go with us, but we had a day of sightseeing ahead of us after our early lunch. Would definitely return next time I’m in San Francisco, but would recommend taking your items/​meal to go since there are only a handful of tables and they were all full by the time we left. This place, just like most others in Chinatown is cash only.

This review started out fantastic as this Chinese BBQ restaurant had free tea and tables for indoor dining compared to many other BBQ places nearby which is take out… A day later we returned as we liked the fact they had seating for the BBQ foods we wanted to eat again and they declined to serve our party of 3 because they wanted every one to order a dish (not going to happen as only one person was eating that early in the day). Even though it was lunch hour they only had one other table occupied so it wasn’t like they didn’t have room. Honestly I have never been turned down seating at any place so its a first time but for that experience they get 1 star!!! Was the food any good… it wasn’t spectacular and inline with the other places nearby.

its about a mile walk from my office, but I will gladly walk over! lol, it makes me feel less guilty when i do a bit of exercise before i stuff myself to near death =P alright lets get on with it.
Food: Large portions, everything is made fresh. I got the BBQ pork and Roasted Pig with rice. it came with soup too. mmmm, crispy pork skin, and nice tender bbq pork. They give u a pretty big plate too. I couldnt finish the rice. i Just ate all the meat and veggies.
Price: CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP CHEAPPPPP.
Cleanliness: Eeeeeeehhhhhhhh. its not that clean. lol. u just have to over look it. and wash ur utensils in hot tea. lol
Service: the lady that served us was nice! and quick! which is usual for a chinese place.
Oh, btw, lol in case you didnt realize from other reviews, its not just a dine in place (with their like 5 tables lol) its a to go place! so get ur roasted goodies from the from to bring home to ur mama! noms!

I come here to get the duck feet — they are flavorful and soft, perfect for my soup rice noodle with tender greens.
Sometimes I would get their other deli items but for whatever reasons, they don’t go bad very quickly even if you don’t touch it and have it in the fridge.
We had lunch here couple weeks ago — as you see from the pics, we had the mixed beef tripe soup fun and stir fried thick rice noodle with shredded duck.
The soup fun was good — the mixed tripe was flavorful and delicious. Besides the stomach, tongue and spleen. The stir fried dish wasn’t as good — the fat rice noodle is not what we expected and the duck did not taste like duck.

Yummy, very authentic, Chinese food.
I ordered the most «Americanized» item on the menu. «Dinner combo A» or something like that. It was like nothing I’ve ever seen at an American Chinese food joint. I couldn’t have picked these foods out of a lineup!
There were lot and lots of ancient Chinese people eating here, which is a good sign.
Super friendly wait staff, despite MY language barrier. Ice cold beer to wash everything down was just the icing on the cake!

Definitely not what I expected, but my uncle wanted roast duck and wanted to eat here (after the place on the corner of Broadway and Powell was deemed too crowded).
Anyways, my uncle is a regular here. So regular that apparently, we got to sit in the unvisited upstairs portion of the place.
Anyways, the place was pretty good, and the dishes and utensils were pretty clean. We had roast duck, salty fish fried rice, egg plant, a beef dish, and some spinach. All pretty tasty.
Additionally, the staff is pretty friendly. And definitely some of the nicer ones I’ve seen in the SF Bay Area. Except we had a little issue with one of em, who according to my aunt, is SUPER forgetful and always messes up the orders. tisk tisk tisk.
But overall 4 stars!

I hardly eat in Chinatown as the quality over the years has declined. Most places I go to make the food too greasy and oily. This place is surprisingly good. They have a different lunch special everyday of the week. Today I tried their roast pork meal which comes with a tofu soup, massive amount of rice, and some cabbage on the side. All for $ 5. Granted the meat was a little on the fatty side but otherwise it was a decent meal for $ 5. I also ordered the broccoli beef which came with really fresh broccoli and the meat was a little on the chewy side but not full of fat. This was $ 5.25 and came with the soup and rice. The place is pretty clean and the ladies serving us processed our order pretty quickly. I would definitely come back again if I was in the neighborhood.
This is a place I would come to make big orders for party. I went to a lot of different Chinese places on Clement and Sunset before checking this place out. I can’t wait to try the mini fried chicken wings and drumlets.

And you know what, a WHOPPING 75 cents.
You can’t even buy a Whopper for 75 cents. I’ll take the pig head thank you.

Sure from the outside it looks really ghetto… sure, it’s a hole in the wall and there’s a whole half of a fried pig hanging. but that’s what you’re going to get for some authentic Chinese food. Forget about panda express and all the other chinese food places you’ve been to. beef broccoli and sweet and sour chicken is NOT chinese food.
I’ve been going here since I was a kid and being a person that visits chinatown a lot… I know what’s a good place, and this place has bomb food. Not only that, there’s times if you ask if they have a certain vegetable (galang or eungchoi) they always say they have it. and then you’ll see someone running outside and coming back with it from the market nearby. (That’s what I call fresh!)
It’s a little hole in the wall restaurant with some bomb food with great prices. Check it out, don’t judge a restaurant by it’s … façade =)

I am Andrew Zimmern …, I love to eat werid food around the world. No, I am not Andrew Zimmern, I am just inspire and am a fan of Andrew … I am trying to expose what werid food you can get in SF China Town. This is one of the place and … how so … Well, you can get dicon raddish pig skin, chitlins and braise tripe and other cow internals (as seen in my uploaded pictures). So if you are like Andrew, by all means try them out. It’s reasonably clean, you won’t get sick … but you might get sick because of other reasons.
In the picture, #20 is pig skin, #21 are tripes and other interanl organs.
