History

Established in 1984.

Dr. Britta Tomer and Dr. David Shen purchased the orthodontic practice from Dr. Benjamin Ichinose in 1984. In 1986, the practice was renamed to OrthoWorks Orthodontic Group. Dr. Tomer and Dr. Shen practice along with five Orthodontic Specialists each specializing in different aspects of the orthodontic field including Surgically Assisted Orthodontics, Lingual Braces, Cleft Palate and Cleft Lips, Computerized Digital Mapping Orthodontic Techniques, TMJ and Sleep Apnea.

Over the years, thanks to the support of our orthodontic family, the practice has grown from its original three offices, to a total of ten offices throughout the Bay Area. We have helped over 60,000 orthodontic patients to bring out the best of their smiles with orthodontics. Our vast knowledge and experience enable us to consistantly craft the most beautiful smile and facial esthetics for our patients. In 2013, OrthoWorks Orthodontic Group was featured in SF Magazine Best of The Bay Issue.

Dr. David Shen earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine and his Certificate of Orthodontic Specialty from the University of Pennsylvania and has over 25 years of experience in the practice of orthodontics and dental facial orthopedics. Dr. Shen was named one of the top 100 Invisalign orthodontists in the world. He is a former faculty member of UCSF and he lectures internationally; He is the founder and past president of the Northern California Asian Dental Association and a member of the American Association of Orthodontists and the California Dental Association.

I am SO happy I chose Orthoworks (and I am commuting 3.5 hrs to get there). I chose them based off of Unilocal reviews and the contact I received from Dr. Shen. I am really happy with the service I have received, and the fact that everyone there is so friendly, kind and respectful. My first appointment was at their Sutter location where I got the imaging done all at once. For not being used to being in a city, getting to that location was horrible and stressful, especially with two little ones. Then I paid bookoo for parking at the Sutter location. I’m sure it’s no big deal for people living in the city though. I’m now at the Geary location which is an absolute BREEZE to get to coming from up North. Zero stress, and my appointments there are SO fast and easy. While my appointments are fast, I don’t feel like they’re just trying to push me through. I feel like I’m getting great care. My treatment has been done to fit in with living so far away, so I only have to go every 3 months. I really appreciate that consideration and their confidence in my treatment. No other ortho near me that looked decent would do this. Typically that may seem like a red flag, but the fact that Orthoworks has so many rave reviews as well as Dr. Shen being a top provider caused me to get over that and look at it as only a plus! I love that I can call anytime, or email Dr. Shen directly. I’m already really happy with my results, and I’m not even half-​way done with my treatment. Again, no regrets for deciding on long distance treatment in SF with Orthoworks from 3.5 hrs north! This Geary office is so convenient.

*I changed my rating from 1 star to 3 based on the reasonable, helpful response I got from the business owner here on Unilocal.The original incident outlined below was unfortunate, but I’m so glad to hear that they’ve changed their protocols!
I was appalled by the service I received over the phone with the receptionist at OrthoWorks. OrthoWorks accepts Denti-​Cal insurance, and as I am caring for a girl on public assistance, I was grateful to learn through Denti-​Cal that the procedure she needed would be covered. However, the staff at OrthoWorks had the gall to tell me that the procedure is not covered by the insurance, right after I had gotten off the phone with the insurance rep to confirm that it was. I even called back to get the specific code that the staff would need to submit for, and again they insisted that it wouldn’t be covered. I’m suspicious that the second I said «Denti-​Cal» they simply decided it wasn’t worth their time to help this very-​much-​in-​need girl. The woman rudely said she’d call me back in «about a week» and, not surprisingly, never did.
I totally understand that businesses need to meet a bottom line, but I was heartbroken to have to make this sweet girl suffer through additional days of pain just because this company didn’t want to deal with her insurance. And after really taking the time to explain the urgency and need of the situation, it was abundantly clear that OrthoWorks had no concern at all, not even enough to look into the coverage further or have us in for a quick consultation to work it out. Fortunately I have an excellent dentist myself, who, though she does not accept Denti-​Cal, is seeing my girl for FREE. Because that’s what people who go into healthcare should be doing: working to help those who need it.

In my life I always had crooked teeth and was afraid to smile. I always admired those with nice straight teeth. I went to see the awesome staff at Orthoworks almost two years ago. Today, after 46 Invisalign trays my process is finished. Now I love to have my picture taken and I owe it to the staff if Orthoworks! It’s life changing. I love them!

I have been going here for years with my 2 children and service is at best mediocre. The orthodontists & dental assistants are pretty nice and the end result seems ok; even though one of my children’s teeth started to shift. The thing I don’t like about this office is the hush, hush cost of braces — the pull you into the little office as they work their numbers = your cost & each family gets a different price depending various things — actually I don’t know exactly why the price is different… but I have spoken to other parents who takes their children there and who paid much less than I did. Also a co-​worker from work went there — as an adult — and got a better price. On top this they charge extra for any little extra service needed down the line so make sure you know what you are paying for and ask the question what happens when the braces are removed — future care & treatment!!!
This does seem to be quite the money maker and the waiting rooms looks like an assembly line in the mornings. Again I have had pretty bad service at the reception desk where they are at the border line of rude; perhaps they would be nicer if I spoke Cantonese which I don’t do… They don’t think twice about interpreting a conversation to speak in Cantonese to someone who has a questions even though we were there first, rude! Shop around for prices before you commit and don’t expect great service, I get better at the DMV on a busy day.

13 yr old female presents with missing permanent teeth including: top and bottom incisors, top bicuspid, and bottom molar. The baby teeth are still in place and teeth are severely crooked with no apparent over or under bite.
Good Orthodontists would say: «You will eventually need dental implants for your 4 missing teeth. We can make sure to leave enough room for the implants that you can get when you get older, or we can extract some of the baby teeth and try to close the gaps. That would save you thousands of dollars since one implant is $ 3000-​$ 5000 and you need four. How would you like us to proceed?»
What Orthoworks said «Your teeth have no problems! Let’s do braces immediately! I will charge $ 4000 to your account.»
Result?
I have to get braces again at age 20 and then fork out $ 10 000 for dental work. Please don’t go here if you have complex dental work or if you want quality professionals that communicate with their patients and have their patients’ best interests at heart.
Oh yeah, and my mid-​line for my top teeth are way off and it has nothing to do with my complications, they just did a crooked job. It’s the first thing every dentist I’ve seen since points out.

I used to go to this office or the other office downtown, but this office is nice, it always have parking and the people are nice too. The only thing I have to say is that when its your last visit, make sure you look decent because they take your picture. I didn’t look to good in my pictures, but i loved getting my braces off :)

I remember the first day I got my braces, I didn’t like em very much. But later on, I gradually gotten used to it. I would have gotten off my braces 2 years after, but I never wore my rubberbands. But when I did wear the rubberbands, I noticed a BIG change. This may sounds bad, but I got my braces off 4 years later from the day I got them. & now I’m loving my smile.

Orthoworks is fantastic in the trade! I’ve had Invisalign for neary 3 months and its amazing. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and they try their best to make you feel comfortable. They’ve explained every step of my plan, which was easy to understand. They’re very flexible around your schedule, as I rescheduled some of my appointments almost last minute. Another great thing is you can contact them bot by phone and email, which is so convenient if you don’t have time to make a call.
By the way, Dr. Tomer is a friendly and awesome orthodontist!

Orthoworks is awesome. I’ve had my braces for two years now, but I’m more than ready for them to come off. My general dentist (
) told me that I’ve actually got three doctors (my ortho, oral surgeon, and gen. dentist) working together all just for my teeth! Even though it’s true, I laughed when he told me that. Go teamwork!
I decided I wanted to get dental implants after orthodontic treatment, but one of the roots was in the way. Dr. Shen said he could make the root straighter if I wanted dental implants. Dr. Chang, a new face at orthoworks, told me that the roots can only move a millimeter a month and after almost 4 months the root is considerably straighter.
The assistants and receptionists are all very helpful. There are people at the office who speak Chinese, which was very helpful for my mom. I especially appreciate Alicia?(I’m sorry, I don’t know if spelled her name correctly). She has a real gentle touch and for that I’m extremely grateful when it comes time to change wires.

i got my braces for almost year and Orthoworks is reliable, and friendly. the first time i went to them they told me what i needed to do and told the directions cleary. the workers there are very friendly and if you have any questions feel free to ask them about it and they are willing to answer your question.

When my dad told me he was going to get me braces, I was extremely excited! My dentist referred me to an orthodontist but it was a little out of our price range and it was not as close to school as i would have liked. My dad then thought, why not just go to the orthodontist your sister went to? I didn’t really care which orthodontist it was as long as it was convenient for me to get to there from school. From the looks of my sister’s teeth, i was already sold.
The staff at Orthoworks are really friendly and they tell you what they are putting in your mouth, or whatever procedure they will perform, instead of just leaving you hanging there! I love how the assistants tell you the reaction to the procedure so there is no surprises. A year and a few months have passed and recently I’ve been told that i can get my braces off soon. I’m excited yet sad since I have spent so many afterschools here, I won’t be able to imagine my life without them!

I’ve had braces for two years and I’ve had my retainers for 6 months now. Orthoworks is reliable, convenient, and friendly.
When I first came to them they explained everything that needed to be done and what I needed to do. Dr. Tomer gave me a realistic time line. She made it very clear what had to be done for my braces to come off on time.
The staff is super friendly and if you have any questions or concerns they are more then willing to answer them. They even have payment options to work around your budget.
I’d recommend anyone who needs or wants to get braces to go to them. They have many locations so you dont need to travel far.

Orthoworks is awesome! Everyone there is super friendly and helpful. They make sure you feel comfortable. Yes, the braces process itself is very scary and tedious. But Orthoworks helps you through every step and makes sure you are okay! They don’t just force things into your mouth. They tell you what they’re going to do. It is frightening (in my pov), but their reassurance makes me feel a whole lot better! :D The nurses/​assistants (and Dr. Tomer!) are superrrr nice! I love my new and improved smile (and teeth). :D :D :D

I love this place! Well as much as you can love going to the orthodontist. About three months ago I had to take the plunge and get braces (ahhhh). I was scared, nervous and definitely embarrassed to go through with it but it had to be done because of my bite. As soon as I walked into their office for the first time, I felt better as they are very nice and helpful and answered all of my 100 question that I asked. Since that first time I have since continued to have great experiences there and they get you in and out quick. They were even running behind at my last visit and with time passing, I had to go to work and as soon as I told them, there were 3 people working on me and doing whatever they could and what usually takes 30 min took 15 and I was out of there and on time for work. I highly recommend this place. Although it has only been a couple months, I know I made the right decision and everyone there has made it that much easier every step of the way.

Thus far I’ve had a positive experience at Orthoworks, and this is from someone who put off getting braces for a long time.
Adult braces are not anyone’s favorite thing, but everyone at this branch helped make my decision to get them far from painful. Rosa from the financial department helped find a plan that fit my budget, and everyone else from the orthodontists to the technicians have made each visit quick and easy.
My favorite gal there, Cherry, has consistently adjusted my teeth at each appointment under the orthodontist’s watchful eye, and just a few months in they have straightened up considerably! I can’t wait for the final results.
I won’t lie to you, the first two weeks were difficult for me — getting your mouth to adjust to metal is no fun. But past that it’s been smooth sailing and I look forward to each appointment. Speaking of appointments, they have a computerized system in place that sends you reminders so you won’t forget to show up!

I still remember the dreaded day I lost my retainers. I was going to USF at that time and accidentally left my retainers in the communal restroom. The janitor then probably threw it away when he cleaned the restroom the next day. Worst day of my life!
I called every Orthodontist located within 5 miles of the school and everyone seemed to be booked or too busy to have me. Orthoworks was the only place that accepted me and I actually was able to get an appointment the same day.
This was my first time being away from home so filling out the papers were new to me, but the front desk assistants were very helpful and nice. They provided me with payment options since I didn’t have money on hand.
They then took me to the back and had the mold made and then sent me away. In a couple of days I had a new pair of retainers. My teeth now can live happily ever after =)
I totally recommend this place to anyone within the area. Everyone is nice and they provide great service.

I was a freshman in hs when I got braces here to fix slightly crooked bottom teeth and overbite. Nothing too obscure and they said no more than two years. The doc, Dr. Tomer said no need to pull out teeth which made me really happy. Two and a half fucking years later… I’m a senior now and my bottom teeth are straight but the top? Hasn’t even fucking budged so then they tell me oh now we got to pull two top teeth and I was like… What the hell you been doing the past few years ??? So now my top teeth are extremey spread apart and still no movement… It’s been another half a year and my dentist says that the braces and all the shit they’ve been doing to my gums is starting to make the gums lose their grip on my teeth… Thanks orthoworks for screwing up my teeth. This place is a disaster Definitely be cautious if you come. Dr. Tomer may seem nice, but she just wants money, who cares if a girls teeth are ruined.

I originally got invisalign from the San Bruno office but ever since I moved back to the city, this office has become my primary place for check ups, etc… Dr Tomer is the primary doc that runs this office– she’s friendly along with the rest of the assistants that help her.
There’s usually metered parking right out front or around the block.
If anyone is looking to invest in invisalign I would highly recommend visiting Orthoworks– no regrets whatsoever: D
