History

Established in 1996.

Roger Raiche and David McCrory started their business combining their years of past experience in garden building, botany and working with plants. Planet Horticulture was a concept built on the idea of utilizing the best and most interesting plants from California and around the planet and combining them in an exciting and dynamic way.

Business Owner

David McCrory and Roger Raiche each bring great strengths to the design build team of Planet Horticulture. McCrory is the qualified partner of the California Landscape Contractors C-​27 License. He also holds a degree in horticulture from Merritt College in Oakland and a degree in Chinese University of Texas. Most well known for his intuitive sense of how to spatially redefine and improve any outdoor setting, he also brings management and business skills to the company. Roger Raiche is considered one of the top experts in the world on California native plants and on plants in the world of horticulture. Having discovered new species in the wild and selected and introduced dozens of new plants into the nursery trade, Roger’s reputation is well earned. A masterful flair for combining unusual plants in all kinds of gardens is the hallmark of McCrory and Raiche’s work.

We have been extremely happy working with Planet Horticulture and I would very highly recommend them. They are incredibly creative, conscientious and fast. They are completely professional and super nice guys.
We initially hired them to do something with a small space in front of our house. My thoughts were somewhat limited when I think about it now… I thought that they would work with the space we have, which included a concrete path and step in front of our door, and a retaining wall with a small space to put some plants. Well, clearly I was thinking «inside the box» and I’m so thankful that I just trusted their ideas and let them have at it! They busted up the concrete and turned the sterile and somewhat rotting wood retaining wall into a switchback trail (in a space you wouldn’t imagine there being one!) and the plants they chose have grown so up just beautifully together! We get compliments on the front of our house constantly, and at least two neighbors across the street have said (separately) that they just love waking up and looking down at our garden. It makes me feel really good about our investment that it can elicit such a warm emotional reaction from neighbors as well as our own pleasure at looking out over it. Honestly, it makes me happy every time I look at it.
The following year, we hired Planet Horticulture again, this time to do something with the steep slope behind our house. My initial hope was simply to make it accessible and plant some drought-​tolerant species that would be nice to look down on from our deck. But again, that was my limited imagination! They created a switchback trail, beautifully landscaped it, and even created a couple stone benches which we can sit on and look out over the view. It’s really wonderful. There is nothing I would do differently.
The drip irrigation in front and back was done really well and thoughtfully, considering the drought. I also really wanted lighting, especially out front, and they installed a great system, with uplighting and path lighting, all on a timer.
I’m a big fan of Dave, Roger and their crew. Their lead gardener, Jesus, is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, and the whole crew are just wonderful to have around. Very professional, very fast and very clean. I cannot say enough about them!
We’ve been so happy with the results. It’s definitely one of the best things we’ve done to our home since moving in. It is amazing what a difference it can make.

Dave and his crew are amazing! They were patient with us as we developed our landscaping plan, they worked with our budget, and created a beautiful garden oasis. All within a small, but steep backyard filled with weeds and deteriorating fences. Dave’s design was more that we could hope for. It is easy to care for and provides a diversity of colors.

My house looked like it had been abandoned because of the expansive front yards which was all weeds. Hubby was sick of mowing them but my solution was to block the view out of my consciousness. The dark day came when I broke through my denial and decided something had to be done.
I called David and while we spoke he looked at google earth to see my property (brilliant use of technology). He could see some basis characteristics about my yard and we discussed some objectives. We scheduled an appointment.
Long story short I loved the looks he had created and pictures on his website and hired him to do the yard.
Things I liked:
1. Price
2. Creative style of grouping plants and design sense for entire yard.
3. Amazing speed in achieving results with a large crew.
4. Every plant ball protected by chicken wire cages.
5. All plants deer resistant, drought tolerant, and warranted for 3 months.
6. They actually know what they are doing when it comes to irrigation systems (I’ve had some bad experiences in the past).
7. Due to my overwhelm with circumstances in my life I had very little input on plants choices and let David figure it out. I also intuitively knew that he would make amazing choices… and he did.
8. David and his crew were all so professional, polite, friendly and helpful and knew what they were doing.
9. My husband and I are thrilled!

David McCrory and Roger Raiche (Planet Horticulture) are simply the best! When we decided to re-​landscape our hillside garden, we were determined to do it right this time. Our first experience with a design build landscape business was downright traumatic. David put us at ease at the very first meeting and it was clear from the very beginning that he and Roger not only had great design sense but that they would pay attention to the details and listen to what we wanted.
We are not only thrilled with the results — the process of working with Planet Horticulture was an absolute pleasure. Our garden took shape over several months — and what a spectacular transformation! Throughout the process, their team was professional and considerate and left our property cleaner than any construction site we’d ever seen!
Now that the project is completed, we return home every day wanting to just go outside and enjoy the space they have created for us and to share it with our family and friends. We have not yet seen our new garden through a full year but I am certain that each month will hold new surprises and that even in the dead of winter, there will be beauty out our back door. Our friends have suggested that our garden is worthy of any gardening magazine — and I can honestly say now that I have the garden I have always dreamed of. Thank you David and Roger!

Eleven years ago Dave and Roger of Planet Horticulture took our garden from a mud pit to a beautiful, lush private oasis in the middle of the City. Both Dave and Roger are experts at understanding the microclimates throughout San Francisco. When first planted nothing in our garden was more than waist high. Now eleven years later we have trees over 4 stories tall and a gorgeous array of plants that screen our property from the homes and windows of our close neighbors.
Planet Horticulture’s true talent is the vision they have of any space and the unique design they implement. Our garden is unlike any other — we have different plants that bloom at different times of the year so there is always something in bloom; we have many plants that bloom at night so the garden has a lovely fragrance in the evening; we have trees and plants that I haven’t seen in any other garden; and we have unique design elements throughout the garden that make it very original.
I was adamant that I am not a gardener when we first contracted with Planet Horticulture and Dave and Roger planted a garden that almost takes care of itself! We have Planet Horticulture come in about twice a year for upkeep and replanting if needed but otherwise I just enjoy my garden year round without really doing much work. I honestly couldn’t recommend them highly enough and would gladly show anyone my garden if a visual reference is needed.

We are thrilled with our garden! Five years ago, upon finishing an addition to our home, we hired Planet Horticulture, David McCrory’s and Roger Raiche’s company, to landscape very ordinary and unexciting front and backyard garden spaces.
Carol had several major objectives and Planet Horticulture has met them all: privacy; the blocking out of less than appealing aspects; year-​round color, fragrance and textural interest; a pleasant outdoor space for us and guests.
Ira’s objective was much simpler: he said, of an unattractive view seen from his workspace: «I’d just like you to make THAT go away».
David said: «I can make that happen» … and he did!
This project encompassed so much more than just the addition of plant materials. Before anything went into the ground, our slightly sloping lot was transformed in ways we never imagined, by leveling an area for a central patio and fountain, creating berms, and by the addition of winding gravel pathways and complete automatic irrigation and lighting systems.
Then plants and trees went in and it’s been a joy to us ever since! Every year we eagerly anticipate those springtime pink Robinia blooms and huge «Limelight» dogwood blossoms, and we now have a mature garden that surprises and delights at every turn!
Dave and Roger employ a friendly, talented and professional team that did other garden related projects for us as well: they built stonework steps; fences; a couple of rustically attractive garden sheds; they designed and built a front deck that expands our interior space and feels like another garden room.
The value of our home has been significantly improved with the landscaping services that Dave and Roger are so highly capable of. It’s now one of the prettiest on the block and we often look out the window to see passers-​by lingering in front for closer looks at everything.
We highly recommend Planet Horticulture! Their design sense, plant expertise and willingness to work with our needs and objectives have made our garden an amazing place!

We hired Roger and David to design and implement a complete remodel of our yard in Belvedere. The transformation has been spectacular! We thoroughly enjoy our yard now and feel that the change has increased the value of our home significantly. We continually hear from neighbors and passersby how much they love our garden.
As spring is now here, the hidden gems that Planet Horticulture included in their design are now beginning to show and our garden just keeps getting better.
I also would like to mention the team of gardeners and landscape contractors that Planet Horticulture works with. They are all excellent and were a pleasure to work with during the several months that they were on site.
I could not recommend David & Roger more highly. Spectacular design, excellent service, and a willingness to work within our budget without skimping on design.
