Specialties

PROXY is a two-block project located in San Francisco seeking to mobilize a flexible environment of food, art, retail, and events in renovated shipping containers and other temporary structures.

Today, our rooted vendors are: Aether Apparel, Basic Training, Biergarten, Juice Shop, Ritual Coffee Roasters, Smitten Ice Cream, and Streets of San Francisco Bike Tours. Temporary vendors and short term installations also move through the site.

History

Established in 2011.

PROXY was conceived in the economic downturn as a response to developers abandoning lots made vacant by the destruction of the former Central Freeway in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley. PROXY’s lease with the City of San Francisco was recently extended until 2021, allowing for a more rigorous exploration into flexible urbanism and the value of architecture designed to disappear.

Douglas Burnham is principal and founder of envelope a+d, a San Francisco Bay Area architecture and design firm whose work reconceptualizes modes of living and building in ways that advance new models of public/private space and compelling visions of the emerging urban condition.

envelope a+d’s PROXY was awarded Best Building in 20 212 by the Architectural Foundation of San Francisco for its strategy of activating underutilized spaces in the city.

A Community Get Together.
this is an example of the creation of culture and shared experience.
a truly San Francisco feeling.
when people watching free outdoor movies together and drinking beers, eating different kind of food from the food vendors at this lot on Octavia and Hayes while also being very close to Blue Bottle Coffee on Linden.
it has become a model of innovative urban development as well.
it bring people together.
you might find love too here.
but before was even better when people could hang on blankets, turf and low chairs like an evening at the park instead of now with the bench configuration.

Esta zona de San Francisco me sorprendió mucho y para bien. Buscando en Unilocal un sitio nuevo al que ir que se saliera de la ruta turística di con esta especie de espacio industrial al aire libre en el que distintas marcas acampan temporalmente en sus metros cuadrados. ¡Buena idea! El día que fuimos nosotros había tiendas de ropa, un café con muy buena pinta, cervecerías y un camión de helados que solo verlo ya alimentaba.
Dimos una vueltas por la zona y comimos muy cerca de allí. El barrio es muy chulo y lleno de tiendas y boutiques independientes. También hay muchísimas opciones para comer. Al final volvimos a por un café y nos sentamos en unas sillas del mismo que estaban en medio del espacio. Si no le pongo 5 estrellas es porque el espacio estaba un poco desangelado, es decir cabían muchas más cosas y parecía poco lo que había para lo que puede caber. Por otra parte, como no, un señor estaba tirado a un metro nuestro en el suelo boca abajo, con los brazos estirados y sin moverse. A esto no me acostumbro porque la gente pasa por delante y nadie se gira, yo me quedé todo el café preguntándome si se levantaría, a lo que la respuesta fue sí, ya que al rato estaba buscando restos de cafés u otras bebidas en una basura. Una gran pena.

What a cool spot! There’s a few business that are open here, but there is also some cool artwork. It seems like they have different events that go on here as well. A nice spot to hangout during a nice day and walking distance from some shops.

The Proxy is a pretty chill space. It’s basically a cement park smack in the middle of Hayes Valley that often has a bunch of different food vendors and artwork. Right now the main food vendors are Smitten Ice Cream, Ritual Coffee Roasters, Juice Shop, and a pizza truck that comes by. The artwork is super hipster. I can’t remember the exact purpose of the place but there’s a sign on one of the pieces of artwork that say that it’s in development for something awesome in the future. Nice little park in Hayes – on a weekend, you’ll definitely see this place pretty crowded.

What a great idea for the temporary undeveloped space that is in Hayes Valley. Smitten, Ritual and a number of other business run great spots out of this project. If you look across the city the folks organizing the America’s Cup has copied this exact same concept for some of the park. It’s great to see the ingenuity of SF local flavor at work.
