Eh, it’s okay but they don’t have egg noodles which is my favorite. Price is decent. Food was above average.

NOTE: currently closed for renovation — Short and simple. Great phở without any hint of MSG. The Broth is excellent and very tasty.

i love this place because: 1. it is located a block and a half from my house; 2. they show 2 different sports channels on 2 separate mounted flat screen tv’s; 3. they play awesome pop music, as if i’m listening to my own ipod; 4. they give my daughter a plastic spoon so she can bang on the table while my husband and i chow down; 5. your water glass and tea pot are constantly being refilled; and 6. the food is soooo good. everything i’ve had is good. beef phở, chicken phở, shrimp rolls, fried imperial rolls, the soup with crab and tomato, and the ox in wine sauce, and vietnamese crepes. we’ve been going over a lot more lately, since phở is even better on rainy days. this spot is definitely in high rotation for us. good prices, excellent service, very clean and elegant place settings.

In case you don’t know yet, this place has a temporarily closed for renovations posted sign. It seems strange that Good Luck Dim Sum next door, has been under renovations at the same time. Perhaps it means that the repairs needed in the back(the front end looks intact) involves both places. ***Update: I’ve been told that a kitchen fire affected both places. This is a northern vietnamese restaurant, so their phở doesn’t come with the plate of greens that most Americans expect to get, and they specialize on chicken dishes(beef is NOT their forte). Great place to get a bowl of hot chicken phở(broth) on a cold night. The noodles are different too. Their cha gio looks more like Chinese egg rolls than typical imperial rolls, but still okay. Service is fast and efficient.

This was my first NORTHERN Vietnamese phở experience. Before this, I didn’t know there were regional differences. The noodles are wide and flat and served without the typical greens and mung beans of what I think of as more traditional Phở. The broth was a 7 on a scale of 10 but and the meat and fixings were a 9. Overall there was so much in my bowl, I didn’t finish(and I always finish). The fried spring rolls were excellent, with better than expected presentation and a healthy amount of lettuce and pickled veggies. I’m tempted to come back for the other food dishes which looked yummy. Place was clean, and staff friendly and attentive.

Let me just say I’m no phở expert but I thought the phở was pretty good. The portions here were also big, the service was good, the place was clean. The only thing lacking was the plate of bean sprouts that I usually expect to get when ordering phở. I asked for some but I was told that this was a different style of phở and they don’t eat it with bean sprouts? Not sure what that’s about but I’m sure I’ll go back and try something else one of these days.

I came here for their Chicken Salad after reading about it from the Examiner last year. It consisted of shredded chicken and cabbage, overall light but packed with many different flavors. So good I wanted to lick the plate, but instead, we got seconds. Come here with at least 4 people so you can try all their dishes. Skip the phở though, I smelled the refrigeration on their beef. Bummer because Phở is in their name. 3.5 stars.

I’m surprised! For the first time in my life I went to a Vietnamese restaurant and order something other than Phở, rice dish, spring rolls, bun bo hue… you get the point. I ordered«Bun Rieu(Crab Meat Noodle Soup).» Normally I don’t order this dish in the restaurant because it is a rare entrée that people don’t order that much. Thus I would imagine restaurants cook this broth and leave in the fridge for a few days before making a new broth. Well they might do that here, but I couldn’t tell. I liked it! Taste differently than the way my mom cooks it. But good enough! I’ll be back!

I like noodles, and I love anything fried(except for insects, i know some people are into that but i’m definitely not) so I really liked what they did with the Hanoi noodles with beef– it’s noodles fried into a pancake style and has gravy and beef(you can also get shrimp, although«seafood» is whited out). We also got Hanoi special fish on a sizzling plate and that was good except it was a bit salty. Ok, pretty damned salty. It came with noodles, lettuce, pickled carrots, some fried shallots or fried onion sprinkles and pickled daikon. I like that they put dill in it, so much that I didn’t mind burping dill all day. Almost enjoyed it, even. My dad and brother have both been here before and liked the phở, which is why we went into there today, but we didn’t end up getting any. We also got the spring rolls with shrimp– standard, no complaints. Some rice dishes. Nothing to write home about. I wish the fish hadn’t been salty, because I would’ve come back just for the fish. 4 stars, because I know they’re new and will most likely improve. I will be back for the Hanoi noodles, at least. And to try the phở.

I use to live in the Sunset and use to go to the Vietnamese restaurants on Irving. But since I’ve moved to Richmond, I go to this Vietnamese restaurant. The menu is pretty good. Some of the popular items, everyone gets from other Vietnamese restaurants. But there are also some that are just a bit, I don’t know how to say it. Modern? Or different but in a good way. The serving sizes for me are huge. But I’m a 4’11″ 95 lb girl. So do the math and the logic.

My husband and I tried this place on Saturday. It was OK. We both ordered noodle soups, his with chicken and I had the rare beef and beef ball soup. The only additives you get are lime squeezes and fresh jalapenos. We also ordered spring rolls. They are small in size and it seemed that had already been fried and then briefly reheated… maybe in a microwave. It was very bustling and busy. Probably, won’t return to this little spot although I do have an interest in the Ox Tail.

in determining how many stars to give this fine phở restaurant [in the veritable caespitose of vietnamese restaurants on clement], i couldn’t think of any reasons to give it 5 stars, but i couldn’t find any reasons to not do so either. somehow, it missed the mark. but just slightly. i ordered the vermicelli bowl with vegetarian imperial rolls. the noodles were done just right, the rolls were cut into appropriate sized chunks [i haven’t mastered chopsticks yet, let alone sawing food items with said sticks], and the fish sauce was in no way overpowering. my dining partner decided on the chicken noodle soup. she enjoyed it for the most part, her only qualm being that there were some pretty fatty [in the lipid sense] chicken pieces in the soup. all of the dishes came out of the kitchen very quickly [the place was only ½ full]. but just a few things were off: being white, i’ve found that most places will automatically present me with a fork [though slightly racist, its true — i cannot use chopsticks to save my life]. so whether the nice waiter was confident in my skills or just didn’t realize it, we had to ask for forks to finish our noodle dishes. we also ordered the spring rolls [which were tasty] and they came with an equally tasty and sweet peanut sauce, but which oddly had an incredibly spicy red sauce on top of it. So in order to get to the peanut sauce, we had to wade through the sauce of hell — next time i think i’ll ask to hold it. because there will most definitely be a next time. [cash only]

I haven’t been to another Vietnamese restaurant ever since I stepped foot into Phở Garden. I went out last night with my parents to grab a late dinner and they decided to give this place a try. I warned them that the reviews weren’t so great but they insisted on coming. Around 830 on a Monday, they were pretty busy… The menu offers the usually Vietnamese fare. I went with the #8 Phở Bo Dac Biet(Combo of well done beef, beef ball, and rare beef. I swear I ordered a SM but they gave/charge me a LG. I couldn’t finish it since it was so big. Right when it came out, I new I wasn’t going to like it. Way too much oil and the noodles they use was not the traditional Phở noodles but the noodles you would get if you eat Phở Ga(Chicken Noodle Soup). I like my phở with traditional ones! The first bite of the beef, made me feel like my teeth were bought to be pulled out with it. Beef was sliced way too thick and too over cooked. Beef ball looked like it had been sitting in soup since the morning, and the soup base was too salty. I also tried the House special beef cubes($ 11.95) and the Hanoi style crispy noodle($ 7.95). Although the beef cubes were good, at $ 11.95, I would expect at least a couple more pieces added to the countable pieces on the plate. Plate looked big since they put four HUGE pieces of lettuce and tomato to make it look bigger. But the beef tasted good and really buttery. Cooked med-well and very well seasoned. Crispy noodles were just OK. I thought it was noodle noodles but its just like a pancake noodle. Not enough flavor to that and not enough beef. Service was not bad but they waitress just kept staring at us. I think they want us to leave? Probably won’t come back since I love my Phở Garden!

My friends wanted to try this place out because it recently opened. The inside looks pretty nice and clean. Looks great compared to some other phở places. The food is supposed to be northern vietnamese. I ordered phở and it came with these thick noodles instead of the regular thin rice noodles. My friend also complained about the lack of beansprouts and basil. The taste was pretty good, on par with most other phở places. The broth was savory but not overly salty, and it did not have too much msg which has a slightly sweeter taste. The complaint I have is that they don’t have soy sauce. I usually like to mix it with hotsauce to dip the meat in. My friend ordered the garlic noodles with chicken and he was underwhelmed. He said it tasted like oily chow mein with too much garlic. The plate was too small for him and left him wanting more food. The service was good in my opinion, they even added ice to our tea to cool it down so we wouldn’t burn ourselves. Overall 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

This place kinda sucked. Hubby and I were really hungry for noodles, so decided to stop in last Saturday. We got chicken salad to start, and most of the pieces of chicken consisted of skin and fat, veggies and dressing tasted ok. We both got the vermecelli and egg roll bowls. I went veggie which from the look of the pork was a good idea. There was loads of staff sitting around, and I still couldn’t get a refill of my water. One thing that was good was the lemonade. With so many great places in the city, and I can’t see a reason to ever go back.

I feel like they tried to bite off Phở Garden in terms of the décor and colors(unless they opened before Phở Garden). I noticed that this place was new, so came in for a try today. The service wasn’t all that great. In the beginning, they were attentive and kept coming back to see if we were ready and if we were doing fine. But usually Vietnamese/Chinese places don’t exactly put«customer service» as their top priority anyway(if so, then it sure doesn’t show). We ordered 3 different noodle soups(my regular tai w/steak on the side LARGE). And man. their large was FREAKINHUGE! It would’ve been an XL elsewhere. At first I thought that the steak slices looked weird, and that it wasn’t premium beef. But once we ate it, we agreed that the looks were deceiving. It was tender, easy to chew, and good beef. However, there was some sort of different taste to it, which didn’t work to my liking. On top of that, I prefer the texture of the meat at other places(such as Phở Garden — a.k.a. my fave Viet place at the moment). The soup was a little too dark and a bit overly salty. The eggrolls looked«healthier» than they should be(not fried enough). And I just realized that they didn’t have EFFINBEANSPROUTS in their EFFINSOUP! Sorry. You get 3 stars from me, and thats AFTER cutting you some slack. You’re lucky your drinks(which I might go back to try next time) looked cool and cheap compared to other Viet places(piña colada etc.)

This place took over the old Ocean Restaurant, which I used to semi-frequent. They definitely improved the interior. They knocked down a couple of walls, painted, and put up a lot of mirrors and paintings. It looks a lot nicer inside. It’s run by Chinese as you’re greeted in Cantonese when you enter, but they do speak English, so you’re pretty much good to go either way. The tables could be cleaned a bit better because they’re kind of sticky. I liked the different color chopsticks at the tables. I noticed everyone at the other tables picked matching colors for their chopsticks, but I decided to go for one orange and one green. Why not use different colors if you have the option? Who says you have to have matching chopsticks? I ordered the regular sized phở with rare beef and beef balls. Definitely good-sized portions. The noodles were fatter than I’m used to in my phở. I wouldn’t say it was the best phở I’ve ever had, but it was ok.

Quan Ngon Vietnamese Noodle House serves up some pretty large portions of food. Normally I’ll order an appetizer and a noodle entrée and have no problem putting it away. I actually ended up taking my leftover food to go on this afternoon, and that is a rarity for me. I didn’t try the phở like most of the other reviews to date. From the fairly simple menu I chose the Imperial Rolls, and from a placard taped onto the window I selected the Garlic Noodles with Charbroiled Chicken( ). The diluted, runny sauce for the Imperial Rolls was nothing to shout about. It lacked taste as it was neither sweet, spicy, salty nor sour. The Imperial Rolls arrived on one side of a rectangular platter. The rolls were cut in halves, but there were only seven pieces meaning one half must have rolled away somewhere. In the center of the platter was leaf lettuce and thinly sliced pickled carrots, and a mound of plain rice vermicelli with chopped peanuts and chopped green onion anchored the other side of the platter. I thought the rolls were very good without the sauce. The firm vermicelli, the crunchy peanuts and the fresh green onion worked well together. The Garlic Noodles were presented on a large square plate topped off with large pieces of boneless, crispy skinned dark meat chicken. The noodles were cooked firm with lots of minced garlic and strips of soft, creamy white onion. The garlic taste was outrageous in a good, garlicky kind of way. After eating this dish I knew all things evil were staying far, far away from me. The chicken was moist and flavorful, and even though I know all the negatives of consuming chicken skin I found it difficult to throw out the crackling, crispy skins from this chicken. The service was good. My server greeted me in Cantonese then took my order in English plus she came back twice to make sure everything was OK. The tables could be wiped down a little better though as I found splotches of an oily residue on the table where I was seated. The plastic cup of hot tea that was brought to me when I arrived had a little piece of lint floating on top so I didn’t touch it.
