R Mustangs

Found Rick via Unilocal and he has been a huge help getting my 65 mustang road ready while providing expert guidance along the way. I bought my mustang from yuba city on a whim without doing the right amount of research. Car had a 302 but mis matched parts all around. After a year of putting it on the back burner I decided its time to get this car ready so I could enjoy it. Rick installed power steering while correcting prior mistakes, gave a tune up, some interior work and is now fixing my suspension which wasn’t changed in 50 years. I am confident that Rick will get the job done right and his shop is nearby so that’s always a reassuring plus.

Went in for some parts today and Rick was super helpful. Got the part that I needed. Would highly recommend.

I cannot shower enough praise on this shop for my experiences with bringing my 68 mustang to Rick over the past 6 months — by far the best place in the bay area. Rick is friendly, communicative, on point with both estimates and timing, and overall the best mechanic I have ever met.

Rick is the MAN. I’ve brought my Mustang here for about 3 years, he’s always fast, knowledgable, and very budget concious. He knows Mustangs in and out, I learn something from him every time I come in as he’s always happy to share his expertise.
Recently I had a mysterious, recurring issue with my ‘Stang, one of those deals every classic car owner eventually encounters that is very hard to track down. Rick bent over backwards to help, making time for me, brainstorming, even trading out parts for free until we solved the problem. It was all definitely above and beyond the call of duty, and as long as I live in the area he earned a lifelong customer. If you have a vintage Mustang and live nearby, no question… give Rick a call.

I was checking around the bay area local listings, CL, and eBay for a set of gears for my 1965 mustang.
I decided to go with R Mustangs because they had the best Unilocal reviews and they took some time to talk with me on the phone and go over my options for gearing. It can be hard to find knowledgable people that are willing to do the job AND take the time to walk you through different options. Most of the shops I checked out before R Mustangs were willing to take on the job of replacing my third member, but none of them had the experience, confidence, or knowledge that Rick has.
Each time I called Rick he answered the phone, remembered who I was, and kept me updated with the progress of the job. He shipped my parts out to my house on time. He even was available after the parts were shipped to answer any questions I might have had during installation.
Rick seems to enjoy what he does and it shows through his work.
I highly recommend his shop and I look forward to dropping by next time I’m out in the city.

Today was my first visit to R Mustang and I met Rick who is the owner. Rick was very helpful and taught me a lot about my 68 mustang that I just purchased from this older gentlemen. My Car was running really ruff and he right away noticed that the carb hoses where not connected properly as well as the vacuum was not adjusted. I thought this was interesting because I just took this car to a previous mechanic that swore they adjusted it and the reason why the car was running the way it was because I would need to pay 2k to have the motor rebuilt. Rick also looked at the motor and was able to let me know that it was a 302 and not the stock 289 which the previous mechanic telling me that my car would need to be rebuilt said it was a 289 and I need to send it out which would cost me another 2k on top of the previous 2k. I will be going back to R Mustang thanks to Rick and his team I was given a little bit of education about the car. I have already posted on the forums about this experience and I will be glad to let any one who has a mustang know about this place.

I highly recommend Rick’s work. I’m so happy with the job he did with the gears and the new rear end install.

Without a doubt, R Mustangs is the only place to take your Mustang. Rick is knowledgeable, handy and incredibly friendly.
He often surprises us with little extras — today when picking up the car for some electrical work, he mentioned that the spare tire in the trunk was flat and he had replaced it for us.
Can’t recommend this place enough. If I could give it a 6^th star, I would.

I first brought my recently purchased Mustang to R Mustangs almost a year ago. As you can read from my original review, I was very satisfied with the work, and planned to return as work was needed. My goal with my car is to keep it as a high quality driver, as close to original as possible, but with compromises as needed to improve safety, reliability and drivability. Over this past year, I’ve brought my car in to R Mustangs to make improvements and repairs in a number of areas. In each instance, Rick has always been very professional and the work that he and his team have done has been top notch. Here is a list of the major items that I’ve had done at R Mustangs over the past year:
(1) Ignition — upgraded the ignition system with a rebuilt distributor, replace the points with Pertronix ignition.
(2) Carburetor — replaced the older Holley carb that was on the car, which was ready for a rebuild, with a new Holley 80 457 600CFM (chrome, looks great with my HiPo valve covers and air cleaner)
(3) Brakes — added a dual master cylinder for safety reasons.
(4) Cooling system — replaced original 2 core radiator with new 3 core, replaced all hoses. The car stayed cool during our recent heat wave. I drove it for over an hour in 90 degree heat in stop and go traffic in the city, and drove it from San Jose mid afternoon, with the A/​C on, in high 90s heat, back to San Francisco — in both instances the temp gauge always stayed below 50%.
(5) Handling — replaced original sway bar with 1″ bar. I noticed the difference right away; made a big difference in handling, especially on curves. Replace a worn motor mount.
(6) Drive Train — rebuilt the 2.80 differential to 3.00, using Currie internals. My car is an early 66 model, and had the older, weaker style differential cover. Rick had a later model 66 cover in his shop, and he upgraded me to the new cover, painted it in the original red oxide color and put a clear coat on it. I looks fantastic, I’ll post some pics.
(7) Water Pump Adventure — and most recently I developed a leak from water pump. It turns out that the leak was coming from where a screw was actually missing. I decided I would try my hand a being a mechanic (I can do basic things now, like timing, wiring, etc.). Rick was very helpful in stepping me through the process and giving me advice on the parts, etc. I spent a couple of weekends taking everything off (repainting/​reconditioning as I went). My car has both power steering and A/​C, so there’s a lot in the way of getting to the water pump. Bottom line, when I got to the water pump I discovered that not only was a bolt missing, but one of the other bolts was actually snapped off in the block. I decided to proceed anyway, but when I was attaching the water pump, I torqued one of the other screws to tight and snapped it off as well. Bad news… So at that point I managed to get it all back together and running, but I knew it would need to be fixed right — so I called Rick and he was able to get it in that very weekend (Labor Day). Somehow he was able to get both snapped bolts out of the block and get new anchors put in. While putting everything back together he repainted my timing cover and timing wheel for me. Within just a few days it was all back together, sealed tight as a drum with no leaks, and looks great.
All I can say is thanks R Mustangs! It’s great having such a reliable, honest business in the city. My car is running well and I’m having a great time cruising around the bay area. Of course, now that I have a taste of a 289 small block running well, I’m starting to dream of a big block 390…

I had front disc brakes put on my 1968 Mustang along with suspension work completed here. Great workmanship and Rick is a great guy to talk with about classic mustangs, I stop by here periodically to get ideas on other projects for my car.

I inherited a 1965 Mustang from my grandpa, who was the original owner. About 2 years ago, I took it to Rick at R Mustangs — it had not been driven in years… it had the original shocks! I wanted to restore it, but I know nothing about cars, and I could not afford to do everything at once. Rick was amazing — he helped me put together a game plan for restoring it in stages. He suggested that the first order of business was to make the car safe to drive. He did the work on the engine/​brakes 2 years ago, and the car runs great. When I have had small problems, I’ve stopped by and he’s repaired them, free of charge. I am now in the process of working with Rick to restore the interior. He knows everything there is to know about Mustangs, and he prices the work fairly and honestly. He always provides estimates in advance and suggests various levels of upgrades, what is essential, and what is optional. My grandpa would be very happy knowing his car is in such great hands!

I bought a 1967 Mustang convertible five years ago. With 140k original miles and having never left the Bay Area it was in good shape, given its age. Despite this, I wanted to make some improvements. Rick oversaw the transformation of the car: He installed a new four-​barrel carb, intake manifold, headers, and dual exhaust. It was little too much stress on the old engine – I blew it within five months. Rick quickly found me a replacement and within a week I had my car back with a 302 cu in with custom cam. Next we conquered restoring the interior. Firstly and most obviously, Rick was capable of doing all this work. Secondly, he did it well – the car has required almost no repairs since the original work we did. Thirdly, his easy-​going style made me feel comfortable. «R» Mustangs is definitely the best place to take your classic Mustang in San Francisco.
