EyeCare Associates of SF is a team of ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians that all work together to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of medical eye and vision problems. Whether it be routine exams for glasses and contact lenses or eye care emergencies affecting your eyes or your vision and anything in between, we are prepared, staffed, and equipped to address and correct the problem. We are experts at LASIK and other refractive procedures, Cataract Surgery and the latest multifocal and astigmatic lens implants, Eyelid Rejuvenation, and Glaucoma treatment. We also reserve same day appointments for eye care emergencies.

History

Established in 1995.

While EyeCare Associates of SF was formed in 1995, its founder and CEO, Dr. Samuel Gelbart has been in practice in the same locations in San Francisco since 1982. Dr. Gelbart is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at UCSF. Dr. Barry Kerman has been associated with the practice since 2000 but recently semi-​retired in November 2015 to the East Bay in order to be closer to his family. Dr. Kevin Tan succeeded Dr. Gelbart as the new owner of the practice on August 1, 2015. Dr. Gelbart continues to serve at both the Union Square and Stonestown offices as a part-​time medical ophthalmologist and consultant.

I have had a chronic eye problem for 20 years so I am used to visiting the eye doctor. While traveling for work in San Francisco, I experienced a new and alarming issue with one of my eyes. I called my doctor at home and he suggested I see someone while in SF instead of waiting until I returned home. I called and they offered to squeeze me in that afternoon, with the caveat that I may have to wait a bit before being seen (which I did… appreciatively). The doctor and his staff were excellent. They did not rush the visit because it was the end of the day but asked lots of questions, performed several tests and went to great lengths to explain and show me the issue with my eye. I left feeling informed and thankful that I choose the right doctor from my provider’s web site.

I went to the best of the best in San Diego; Dr. Kent Blade, and Dr. Mark Smith, for treatment of the idiopathic eye disease Pars Planitus. I had treatment for my eye disorder for 4 years with steroid drops and injections.
Nothing was working, so I decided to take it a whole new level…
I had decided to get a Vitrectomy on both my eyes that was performed by Dr. Mark Smith. It gave my normal eyesight back which was great!
So now to Eyecare Associates. My eye was extremely watery, hurt like hell, and I thought it was my eye disorder; and or an issue from the surgery that I had over 5 years ago???
Heidi the office manager understood what could of been the problem and did not hesitate to get me in right away, and I mean RIGHT AWAY! I got to see the owner Dr. Gelbart who has by far one of the best bedside manners a physician can have!
It turns out I had a scratched cornea and that it wasn’t anything serious except for the horrible intense sandpaper feeling it had when I blinked.
He hooked me up with pharmaceutical eye drop samples so I wouldn’t have to wait at the pharmacy, and put me on a regiment that really worked to heal my eye.
A + to Dr. Gelbart, Heidi, and his Staff!

Dr. Gelbart and staff were most professional, from the front desk, to the assistant, the optician, and the second doctor who dilated my eyes and checked my vision. Dr. Gelbart himself has a friendly professional manner that put me at ease, he focused attentively on my condition, explained the causes, and recommended practical treatment. Although the wait was a tad long (otherwise five stars) I am quite happy with the attention I received and believe I can relax now knowing that any future vision issues will receive the best care possible. I also asked and received a referral from Dr. Gelbart to another specialist should I choose an optional surgery, and I have complete confidence in the quality of the referral. Thank you Dr. Gelbart and staff.

Had a stye in my eye, scheduled appointment that morning (without having ever visited Dr. Gelbart before), arrived at offices 1pm, left at 2.30pm without a stye and with solid recommendations on how to avoid getting styes in the future. My wife is a doctor and I can attest to how ideal my experience was — I wish all dental/​medical visits were so easy to schedule, no fuss and successful. Highly recommended.

I am a 68-​year old male in very good health. I have been seeing Dr. Gelbart for the last 10-​years and think that he is an excellent doctor as well as a real caring gentleman. However, i had an experience recently that demonstrates the difference between a good physician and a great physician.
I had been having some real anxiety (which ultimately was found to be caused by a medication that I was taking) and had a routine appointment with my «world famous» dermatologist (who I won’t name). He is the head of his department at a major hospital in San Francisco. Since it is a teaching facility, he had 4 students in the room, which I had no problem with. I told him that I was having a lot of anxiety just as a reference point since it had nothing to do with my skin examination. As he was checking out my face, he commented that my pupils were different sizes, which I was unaware of. I asked him if that was bad and he said «could be». He offered no other explanation and showed no sensitivity to what I was obviously going through. my anxiety went through the roof.
I left the appointment devastated and convinced that I had a brain tumor. It was 3:45 P.M. on a Monday afternoon. I called Dr. Gelbart’s office and told his assistant I needed to speak with Dr. Gelbart as soon as possible. She informed me that he was in a seminar but she would get him the message. Within five minutes, my cell phone rang and it was Dr. Gelbart. I explained what had just happened and how I was in a bad state of anxiety. He asked me if I could meet him at his office in an hour.
I parked and went up to his office and within 20 minutes he was there. He gave me a full exam all the while making me feel safe and supported.
He is way more than an accomplished surgeon-doctor…he is a man who is dedicated and really cares about people. Within a few days, I discovered that the medication was causing the unrealistic anxiety and immediately discontinued it. As dramatic as this may sound, Dr. Gelbart saved my life that day with his above and beyond ability to be a great doctor as well as a real human being. Thomas Hyman

Dr. Gelbart and his staff are extremely professional and he is a brilliant UCSF trained physician.
I went to him to get PRK surgery (a cousin of LASIK) to correct my vision and the results have been remarkable. I see more clearly than I have ever seen in my life and Dr. Gelbart did a great job of putting me at ease and walking me through the details of the procedure.
He also went beyond my expectations when he checked in on me during the weekend after the surgery to see how I was healing and to answer my questions.
He has been great about follow-​up appointments and I have gone to him many times to have him answer other questions I have about my eyes. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for an ophthalmologist in SF.

I’ve seen a number of doctors in my lifetime, but my experience in this office was a new low. I wish there were negative stars.
I sat for over an hour in the waiting room for my «appointment». When I finally got called in, I reiterated that I was there for a medical issue with my eye, not an annual exam. The entire appointment took about 3 hours, most of which I spent waiting, only to have the doctor have no diagnosis for me except a couple fleeting whimsical guesses so extraordinary that he didn’t even have the nerve to write them as notes in my chart. Without any *real* diagnosis, he resorted to calling the emergency medical visit a routine exam for my nearsightedness (something I’ve had since 4th grade). Which was passed to my insurance as such, and was thus not covered. I received a nice $ 360 bill. Thanks Doctor. I won’t even get into the fact that it took a month and a half of debating the bill with the office staff before I finally caved.
Bottom line: Even if your left eye just stops focusing (like mine did) and you are scared you might lose your vision forever, you’d have better luck getting seen by a TL pigeon and it’d be a lot cheaper too.

This team of opthamologists /​optometrists/​opticians is very professional.
Ask the price for new contact lenses as the process is costly and don’t feel obliged to purchase your glasses there as they present it as a very natural way although they seem more expensive than other downtown opticians.
