Damn, we have incredible water. I’ve lived in NYC, Brooklyn, Miami, Portland, Phoenix and Tucson. I’ve experienced everything from heavily-​chlorinated sludge (Phoenix) to weirdly discolored (Portland).
San Francisco’s water is crisp, refreshing, and pleasantly odor-​free. There’s the slightest perk of dissolved salts that hits the back of the tongue for a nice finish. It is, in short, the best damn water I’ve ever had from a public service.
The secret of course is the Hetch Hetchy glacier reserve that supplies our water– I don’t want to think about the thirsty bears and owls and trees that we’re depriving– water that is tested 100,000 times per year (300 times a day???) by the SFPUC.
I’m sure water this good has a closet full of dark secrets, and a movie as good as ‘Chinatown’ lurking in its history, but for now, I’m pleased to shower in the damn stuff.
As a town, we’ve got it better than most, including the price.

(1) To experience the polar opposite, as we all should with our small pleasures, visit Phoenix in the summertime. The water smells like a pool chemical testing kit and can literally only be drank ice cold, to numb the taste. It leaves an unpleasant white film on every surface it dries on– a residue of god-​knows-​what surfactants and pH stabilizers– further evidence that you shouldn’t build a metropolis in the middle of the G-​D Desert.
