History

Established in 1997.

We thank all the brave garden owners back in the last century who trusted our environmentally oriented vision when less or no lawn, native plants, and recycled materials were as rare as Blue Mission Butterflies. Also thanks to Natural Home Magazine, Home Outside-​creating the landscape you love, by Julie Moir Messervy, The San Francisco Chronicle, and others who featured Second Nature Design gardens.

Alma, APLD, is Certified by the Association of Professional Landscapers and was District President of the San Francisco Chapter (www​.apld​.org), holds a Masters of Arts in Landscape Design from The Conway School of Landscape Design (www​.csld​.edu), is a Certified Arborist, member of the California Native Plant Society (www​.cnps​.org), and FUF (www​.fuf​.net).

I’ve been lucky enough to work with Second Nature Design on several projects since 2006. I’ve especially appreciated the ability to work within the confines of limited space and smaller budgets. Alma Hecht has a knack for sourcing unique materials — plant and hardscaping — through ‘upcycling’ and re-​use. We did a project for the SF Flower & Garden Show that was beautiful, whimsical, hip and educational and truly a creation of Alma’s genius and resourcefulness. I look forward to working with her on more projects and recommend Second Nature Design highly.

Alma and Second Nature Design come with a clear vision. Design focused Alma has a true understanding of scale and relationship to place. She has mastered the art of creating garden vignettes. Places, nooks, crannies that tell a story or evoke a sense of peace and a winning connection to nature. She is plant savvy and has a working knowledge of hardscape materials to create boundaries with character. Second nature gardens are fun and welcoming. You don’t just walk through these gardens, you want to sit down and be in them.

Alma created the perfect design for the sidewalk gardens at Sunset Elementary School. Very beautiful, native, easy to take care of and very fun to build with the kids! She has a unique and creative vision to design and plant the perfect garden for any need and desire while meeting ecological and sustainable demands. She is also a joy to know and work with! I would recommend her highly to anyone looking to design or «upgrade» a garden space.

From the time i was born i loved swings and always wanted one in my backyard. Alma realized that dream for me – not only did she put a hand built, beautiful swing set in my backyard but she designed a gorgeous and vivacious garden around it. Highly, highly recomended.
