Fred is a crook. The sales pitch is perfect. This gentlemen has been in the business long enough to know how to make a credible and technically accurate sales pitch for his services. No BS whatsoever during the initial phase, which is why he insinuates genuine professionalism and projects knowledge in the subject matter. Even a detailed test of his knowledge does prove accuracy so the story checks out, in case anyone has doubts about him which would be rare in this business.
The problem occurs once you sign his contract and pay him a huge retainer — a sum of money that even a lawyer would not ask at the beginning of a professional relationship.
Another huge problem with this profession is that it requires little to no skills. Doing this the first time I thoughtI better pay someone but within 2 weeks I knew everything about DBI, I drew my own engineering plans in CAD; ran the load numbers in Excel; I learned every regulation and building code relevant to my project. As soon as Fred understood that I can hold him accountable to future BS he quit all contact with me and stopped working.
Small claims blues now but lost time and aggravation is not a match to getting one’s money back.
Stay away unless you have infinite amount of money and truly you would better pay someone to do whatever they think is right as long as you fear building code; engineering or learning simple rules.
