The people working in this place are super rude. I don’t tolerate that kind of BS. Give someone else your money.

Very disappointed with the Christmas chocolates I bought in Shaws a couple of days ago. I wanted individually wrapped premium chocolates for my advent calendar. I got 3 bags of chocolates, wrapped in cellophane with a cute red ribbon on top. Unfortunately, upon opening and eating the chocolates I was found it to be very low quality– the kind of chocolates you pick up at the dollar store that are waxy and sugary but with little real chocolate. My 10 and 13 year old won’t even eat the chocolates saying Hershey’s and Nestles taste way better than these. Such a disappointment. I would have expected Shaw’s to use better quality chocolates since they’re a specialty candy shop in an upscale neighborhood.

While the ice cream here is good, if you come here looking for Shaw’s creamery ice cream you will be disappointed.
Shaw’s (Millbrae) was my family’s favorite ice cream joint. We would go there a couple times a month, and always ordered the same thing. The location in Millbrae, which closed down a couple of years ago, used to make their ice cream in the back, and gave huge portions to customers.
Anyways, my father took my brother, mom and I to this location a couple of months ago to relive our childhood, but sadly it seems like this shop does not sell their own ice cream, and instead sells Mitchell’s ice cream at a higher price for smaller scoops. A huge let down in my opinion.
Additionally, customer service here is a bit of a hit or miss. You can either get someone who seems like he/​she just wants to go home for the day or someone who is really friendly and attentive.

Best Ice Cream and Candy Shop in San Francisco! This continues to be an extraordinary, old school establishment. They have an exceptional array of ice cream flavors. My favorite is thin mint and grasshopper. The vanilla, chocolate and strawberry can’t be beat! In addition to delicious ice cream, they have a vast array of chocolate candies and some of my favorites including chocolate bridge mix, malt balls, Swedish fish, gummies and jelly bellies! Owner, Marissa and her husband are wonderful, as are the super friendly staff! Great for kids and adults alike!

I come to this place quite often after school to get some ice cream and jelly beans. They give pretty generous ice cream scoops… though it depends on the person working there. Remember to sample the flavors before buying!

This place makes me want to have kids. It’s super cute and old timey.
The ice cream is Mitchell’s, so you know it’s good. I also really appreciate their selection of sugar free candy. The staff, maybe they are the owners, are always really nice.

On ⁴⁄₃₀ approximately 2:40pm (that precise so you guys can check the schedule and aware the lady working that shift.) my girlfriend got rudely yelled at by the lady working.
«Please do not go back there?»
With a tone that will haunt her forever. It ended with a question statement and the attitude was beyond rude.
Miss, if you are reading this, if you had a bad day, don’t take it out on your customers. Especially when it’s our very first visit. We weren’t loud or obnoxious, just got out of a beautiful stroll around the neighborhood. We walked in didn’t get greeted, but the only thing was
«Please do not go back there?»
There was no signs, and she was confused. She was just overwhelmed by what she saw. I would’ve been understanding if we were being loud and rude, however we are not that type of customers.
Your warm not-​welcoming attitude just lost a potential future regulars, and I hope you won’t do that to any other people again.

Shaw’s is fantastic.

Got total of 2 scoops of Mitchell’s ice cream; 1 scoop of grasshopper pie and 1 scoop of pistachio
Grasshopper pie was delicious! It was similar to a combination of mint chip Oreo ice cream
White pistachio was very yummy as well.
We also got 1 pound of chocolate and white chocolate gummy bears ! This was really expensive… $ 12 !! I was thinking about 6 $ tops !! So hesitant on buying because it was so expensive
Would I come back? Yes if I’m in the area ! I think there are other cheaper places n just as yummy as well!

Three stars for a place I WANT to give five stars to. I grew up with Shaws and it is my neighborhood store and I WANT to be a loyal customer– but it’s just not great. Sure they carry great ice cream but it is always stored improperly and has ice chips in it and tastes very stale. I am pickier than most, and other people love it, but if you really like your ice cream sand ice chips…

I don’t eat sugar, so maybe this place wasn’t for me. But, the stuff seemed kind of old and sad. If you want Mitchells ice cream, wouldn’t you go to Mitchells?

This is a solid place, sort of a nostalgic throwback to the days of yore where kids went to the local corner store to buy candies.
They sell assorted candies by the pound, and have a nice selection and friendly staff.
It’s a nice place to take your young kids and experience the retail sugar rush.
Parking in front is more difficult to find, and it’s metered, but there’s a parking lot (metered to pay) on the same side of the street and parallel as well as perpendicular there’s plenty of free street parking if you’re willing to walk a block or few blocks or so in the surrounding residential neighborhood.

When you have a weird ice cream flavor, but it’s the best one you have every had, you know you are at the right place. Ube, purple yam, is one of those flavored at my favorite candy store, shaws.
Ube is a classic flavor at shaws. The candy shop now has anything you could want. I suggest not going there from 2:30 — 3:30 because all the students after school go there. My personal favorite ice cream is the ube and the grasshopper pie. They give many different sizes of cones and they just came out with a mini mini cone which is great for kids.
Shaws has now brought cotton candy, kettle corn, and a frozen drink makers into their store. I’ve only had the cotton candy which was delicious, but not as well formed as the ones you buy at the store or zoo. I’ve heard great things about the kettle corn, but I’ve never seen someone get a frozen drink. If you ever get cotton candy, I highly suggest the piña colada flavor.
The candy that they sell is old and new. They have my personal favorite throwback candy, Razzles, and the more modern candies like Reece’s. They also have candy cigarettes and gum cigarettes. The candy cigarettes aren’t that good, but the gym cigarettes are delicious. They have many flavor of jelly beans and many different pez heads. They also have action figures, lunch boxes, and pillows that have something to do with candy. They have many different fudge flavors such as rocky road and cookies and cream. They will name one fudge the «Fudge of the Month». I’ve personally never seen someone buy fudge, but the pieces get smaller and smaller each time I go.
Over all, this candy shop is great for people of all ages and a great desert place if you go to a restaurant near by.

They have Mitchell’s ice cream and tons of candies and chocolate sweets. A nice stop over after lunch or dinner to satisfy your sweet tooth. There was only one person manning the store so there may be a wait.

Its the only one left. parking is difficult during open hours.
this Shaw’s is the only one left. the large one in Millbrae is the confectioners and is now closed. This is all thats left and it deserves 5 stars. They’ve even outlasted upstarts like Sweet Factory.
I’ve been coming here since the earliest 1976 when i started going to West Portal as a kid.
Best things? Huge Selections of candy from gummi bears to chocolate and chocolate covered gummi bears. Ice Cream and SLUSHES! SUICIDE! That’s all the flavors one squirt of each flavor with the Slushes. Its the BEST! Nothing compares. I only know one other slushy machine and thats in reno. There are similar slushy machines but not like this one.
Other thing great? You’re a kid. you don’t have any idea how many gummi’s to a lb. You order 1 dollars worth of gummi bears. Or .50 cents of chocolate covered gummi bears. Its just that simple. GOTTA LOVE IT!

Shaw’s will always hold a special place in my heart since its officially «That neighborhood candy icecream shop I used to visit growing up.» My favorite thing growing up was their chocolate covered gummy bears, but now that I’m a little older I find them just a tad too sweet for me. I now indulge in their various types of fudges and that occasional coke bottle gummy, and DEFINITELY their icecream =)

Have definitely passed by this place a couple of time and ice cream is something I’ve always loved and craved after dinner.
We had some dinner and ended up parking close to this shop. Because we had such a full dinner, I just wanted to get a small kid’s size scoop of cookies and cream, but the date obviously wanted something a lot more and ended up getting a waffle cone with 2 scoops of pralines and cream… and then didn’t finish it.
Overall, they have Mitchell’s ice cream which definitely makes me super happy… and I just saw in another review that they have shaved ice? This makes me super happy.

A fantastic little candy store, it’s a slice of heaven in West Portal. They have pretty much any candy you can think of. The ice cream is delicious, I had the green tea ice cream (awesome!) and my husband really liked the chocolate.
They don’t have sugar-​free ice cream, which doesn’t matter to me, but someone had come in when we were there requesting it. So just a heads-​up for those with dietary needs.
Also, the blonde cashier who helped us was super friendly, she should get a raise. ;)

Four words. Chocolate covered gummi bears.
First time I came here, I was surprised since the place looked like it was from the 1930s. The worker however did state that the place has been around for a good 80 years. Wow.
I love the assortment of candies and goodies you can find in this place. What captivated me was their homemade fudge. They make it in different flavors and they look like bricks on display but they’re also strangely inviting. The chocolate turtles are so cute just because they really look like turtles.
They also have ice cream here, and hubs and I have tried some of them. I had the pralines and cream, and I really liked how subtle it was. Hubs had rocky road but I don’t really fancy that flavor so I didn’t try it.
The dang gummi bears. For a bag of em, it’s $ 12. A bit pricey, but these little turds are delicious as heck. The chocolate isnt too hard and the gummi bears are easily chewable and dont stick onto your teeth. The chocolate and gummi blend well together and they melt into your mouth like. naturally LOL. I really like the white chocolate ones though. So nommies.
The worker here might seem like a mean old guy but he is actually really helpful. I love these old mom&pop shops because they know exactly what they’re serving up.
Kudos to you Shaw, I’ll be back again :).

Even if my pants are bursting at the seams, I always have to have something sweet after dinner (or breakfast or lunch) My fiancé has regularly indulged me here where we’ve gotten a little slice of fudge to share or a scoop of Mitchell’s Ice Cream. You definitely feel like you’re stepping back in time — displays of truffles & gummies & fudge! They also have Hawaiian Shaved Ice which I can’t wait to try when it’s not November.
The staff is super friendly & let you try as many ice cream flavors as you want (and I would know) I also love that they have some super exotic flavors in addition to stand by favorites — pumpkin, purple yam, grasshopper pie. We will be back — again & again!
