History

Established in 2007.

Split Pea Seduction has been helping to pave the way in the reconstruction of the 6th Street corridor since 2007. Serving farm fresh food, walking the walk and bringing truly exceptional food to the people every day with a daily revolving menu of soups, salads, crostatas, sandwiches, sweets and treats. Split Pea Seduction also shares the space with it’s sister catering company, Jersey Tomatoes, founded in 2006.

Business Owner

Split Pea Seduction is owned and operated by Christian Noto and his staff. A New Jersey native, Christian comes from an East Coast Italian family. Needless to say, he loves to both eat and cook.

With knowledge of Neapolitan-​Italian American cooking from the early days in Mom and Grandma’s kitchens under his belt, Christian moved to San Francisco and landed a job at The Liberty Café. There, he was lucky

to receive hands on education in cooking from a wonderful cast of Zuni and Chez Panisse trained chefs. He was also one of the first staff of cooks at A16, helping to open what has become one of San Francisco’s best restaurants.

In 2004, Christian founded and still operates the C’e Gagutz Supper Club. In 2006 Christian founded and still operates a full service catering company called Jersey Tomatoes. In 2007, he founded and still operates Split Pea Seduction. A great attention to detail and product matched with an amazing sense of food make Christian’s cooking truly exceptional!

Delicious lunch! The Country Split Pea with Pork Shoulder was flavourful and hearty. The portions were large enough that I probably shouldn’t have ordered the Roast Chicken Sandwich. The sandwich was also great, with an incredibly fresh Italian roll, and real fresh roasted chicken!

Don’t have much to say other than the food was delicious. I had a split-​pea soup and some type of strange pastry sandwich that was delicious it had an egg on it had salami and it was sweet. The was also delicious also. Entire meal was is filling although I’m cheep and it was expensive to me for lunch ($ 16.00) I say it was worth it for sure.

This place is amazing. Every time I go there, I swear it’s the best sandwich I’ve ever had. People say it’s a bit speedy, but there are several other places within 2 blocks that charge twice as much for a basic sandwich.

My friends and I decided to try this place because one of them works about a block away. The area is a little rough and kinda scary but once you get into the restaurant there’s a different feel. Really cute and small shop. I ordered the half soup and sandwich which was 16. Seems like it’s expensive but they give you big portions which is a plus. I tried the pull pork sandwich but opted to replace the pork with chicken. It was soooo good! I really liked the pears and the maple aioli sauce they paired with it! The soup was okay. I ordered the pea soup with pork. It wasn’t anything special. My friends decided to order the crostata which honestly just tasted like a cheese croissant lol.
Overall the food is pretty good but the location is a little scary. If you work close by maybe give it a try!

Finally made it here today to order some food to go after being on my bookmarked list to try for years! I figured on my first try, I better order their namesake and got mine with meat. I also ordered ½ grilled onion and olive crostata. The soup has a very thick consistency that initially threw me off. But after a big mouthful, I was right back on again! It is beany, slightly smoky and utterly flavorful. Their version of crostata are made of dough that reminded me of the pancakes for French crepes. The onions they used did not turn sweet through the cooking process which, in this case, is a wise choice.
Overall, a very tasty, hearty late lunch for me. I shall return!

Came in here for a quick bite while walking to a meeting. I ordered the chicken curry sandwich upon recommendation of the cashier. The sandwich was definitely a large size, too large for me to eat in one sitting! The bread was pretty good, and the chicken was moist and flavorful. There was also a huge fresh heirloom tomato on the sando as well. The guacamole, cheese, and onions didn’t really add much to the flavor though… overall it was good but nothing to rock my socks off. I wouldn’t order it again. I had plate envy of other patrons salads; I would come back here if I was in the neighborhood and try one. Four stars for the fresh ingredients.

A sketchy part of the city but the soup is worth it! The pea & slow cooked pork had a great flavor although the vegan pea soup was hearty & homey. The pulled pork sandwich on cornbread was crazy delicious… no doubt so bad for you… but the smaller portion made it all ok! The southwestern chicken sandwich sounded full of flavor but it was just lacking something. Definitely try the soups!

We found this nice tucked away gem when we were looking for parking this Dec. 26 afternoon. So glad we did!
Good, hearty soups, sandwiches, and salads. Good options for vegetarians and those that just don’t feel like eating meat. We sampled a 16 oz soup and sandwich as well as the salad and soup combos and the fried chicken sandwich.
The fried chicken sandwich was different but tasty. Would have been this much () better if the chicken had been hot/​warm. The bread was a nice crusty Italian roll with a soft interior and good flavor. The pork belly borscht with Israeli couscous was hearty and delicious. The salad was huge and came with a good amount of salad greens, nuts, cheese and other veggies. I would have dressed it with more dressing but we liked it a lot.
We didn’t have a very long wait for food that tasted and looked homemade. Prices were good for the amount of food and value.
The owner and staff were very nice and attentive. Small, cozy store front on 6th street– couldn’t tell you exact name of he ‘hood as I am from the East Bay. We will definitely be back he next time we are in SF.

The soup here is fantastic however the location sucks. It is in a very seedy part of town and I was a little scared. The only reason I went was there was SFPD everywhere. I had the split pea soup with a brussel sprout Half Crostata. I posted some pics here also. The other thing I thought was the price was a bit steep, $ 9.50 for 12oz of soup and ½ Half Crostata. I would go again, but it would not be my first choice if my budget was tight.

Great food, very long wait. It’s suggested that you call first if you’re picking up an order to go.
I ate the vegan split pea which was great, and the roasted cauliflower salad — also great.
The only other thing that I didn’t like was that it’s located in a sketchy area– but only about a block in.

I had come in intending to eat only half my sandwich and half my soup, but it was so good I ended up being a glutton and I can’t say I regret it. The glory of youth!
My sandwich (they have a daily menu) was pork with a sort of sweet and pleasing chutney. My soup, the eponymous split pea, something I always enjoy and this joint’s version, full of smokey pork, even more so. Run on sentences.

Today I went with #5, the small soup and full sandwich.
Gruyère and Scallion Frittata with Tomato Fennel Relish: 5 stars
5 stars on the strength of their bread alone. Their house-​made bun is delicious, crispy warm crust on a steaming soft white insides. The tender frittata and heirloom cherry tomatoes did not disappoint. The size was that of a breakfast sandwich, but densely packed and filled me up fast.
Country Split Pea soup with Slow Pork and Vegetables: 4 stars
Too many potatoes in there like unwelcome icebergs, but the liquid and falling-​apart pork were delicious nonetheless.
Chocolate Chip Cookie: 3 stars
Looked absolutely soft and delicious but ended up presenting more of an interesting doughy, doughnutty texture and focused less on the chocolate. That threw off the balance for what I consider a perfect CCC.
For $ 12 it was too much food for me (even though I saved the cookie for later), so I might try only a sandwich next time. It’s been a while since I got this excited about an eatery in my hood, and I can’t wait to come back here!

They really know how to balance their dishes here. The soft egg, perfectly cooked and peppered, together with the maple syrup, gives the waffle great umami and variations between a chewy solid /​gelatinous /​liquid yolk texture. Simple and divine.

The inside is pretty cool… laid back, the «we don’t care but we do» type of vibe.
Menu changes every day, which is pretty neat. I ordered a chopped salad, with tortilla chips, lime, queso, and peppers. It was ok. but I would not order it again for the price (expensive!)
It’s decent… just for the price, I’d rather go somewhere else.

Went for lunch here with a medium sized group of colleagues. The inside is super tiny and while standing and waiting there is a constant shuffle to not be in the way of the menu on the wall or of other people.
However, the major problem with this place is just the order system: it is intolerably slow for a lunch time sandwich place. It took 45 minutes from the time we arrived until the time the sixth and final person got their food. The process looked confused and unorganized. Each of us got soup and each of us had to ask separately for a spoon. Sandwiches were lined up on the back counter and then just sat there for quite sometime.
Also a warning: they seem to change their menu frequently, so the tasty looking fried chicken sandwich you see is not something you will get. Food was decent, nothing memorable. But after a 45 minute wait it is hard to remember anything else.

Ich bin auf einem kleinen Dorf in Westfalen aufgewachsen und beim alljährlichen Feuerwehrfest gab’s natürlich eine Gulaschkanone… aus der meistens aber deftige Erbsensuppe serviert wurde (mit der obligatorischen Bockwurst ;-) Heute Mittag verspürte ich komischerweise ein plötzliches Verlangen nach Erbsensuppe und nach kurzer Suche hier auf Unilocal stieß ich auf «Split Pea Seduction»…und kurz darauf stand ich auch schon bei ihnen auf der Matte.
Ich bestellte eine Erbsensuppe und dazu ein Sandwich mit Beef-​Brisket. Die Erbsensuppe schmeckte wirklich gut, auch wenn sie meiner Meinung ein wenig zu püriert war. Das Sandwich war auch nett, aber beim nächsten Mal werde ich wohl auf das Chicken-​Salad-​Sandwich nehmen, welches einer meiner Arbeitskollegen (Laurence W) in seinem Beitrag anpreist.
Mein Tipp: die Gegend um diesen Laden herum ist nicht die beste/​einladenste (ich lief an mehreren Junkies vorbei, die sich gerade die Spritze setzten) und so würde ich vorschlagen, dass man das Essen zum Mitnehmen bestellt!

I was craving soup, for lunch, on a rainy day and found this place on Unilocal.Definitely a diamond in the rough; a hidden San Francisco gem. Judging the area in which this place is located, the price may be a bit pricy, but I guess one can’t complain with fresh, organic ingredients. Their menu changes daily so ingredients are kept fresh. I had the 16oz. soup & sandwich combo: country split pea soup w/​slow roast pork and vegetables /​slow roast pork sandwich w/​strawberry relish, balsamic roast onions, aioli, and lettuce on a house made bun. On top of the combo I thew in a chocolate chip cookie and a slow cooked broccoli salad w/​watermelon radishes, golden raisins, garlic breadcrumbs, baby kale, and dill yogurt vinaigrette.
The split pea soup was heartily warming to the body… definitely a plus whenever I get a chance to return. As much as I enjoyed the sandwich, the bottom of the bun became a little too oily, perhaps from the aioli; also pretty hearty as the sandwich seemed like a hearty salad between two buns. The other downside to the sandwich: it is a little harder to taste everything, specifically the first bite. I’m not saying to shove the sandwich down (as that completely impossible), but because the bread is thick, I had a hard time catching a bit of everything in the sandwich.
Their sister shop «Jersey Tomatoes» is a catering and I might consider them for an upcoming party.
As mentioned, I will make a return trip.

I’ve been seduced a handful of times now.
I first had the half crostata and small soup. The crostata was quite greasy as others have noted — however I think it’s just the nature of the cheesy pastry — but the broccoli flavor was also lacking. I still think I would go for it again on a rainy, foggy day.
I have since ordered a small salad a couple of times with the addition of a soft egg (always perfectly cooked) and fennel roast chicken.
The salads are very tasty, inventive, and local! Unfortunately, I think they’re very overpriced and they could easily add more bang for your buck with more greens. The small salads with a couple additions end up costing $ 12 – 14 and there’s a very small amount of lettuce. Even a huge salad at Mixt Greens, loaded with additions, costs less.

their chicken noodle soup is very good. has more veggies than chicken or noodle but it tasted fresh and flavorful.
I haven’t had a bad salad from here… they’re always good.
will have to come and try their crostata.
food is not cheap but definitely worth it.
the cookies were okay. then again, I’m not big on cookies.
service– awesome!
in the midst of the weird sometimes dirty neighborhood, it’s always good to have great place like this.
