Steinhart Hotel & Apartments

I loved this hotel. Totally forgot to write a review after my Valentine’s day trip. We stayed in one of the studio rooms equipped with a small kitchen, office, and bed. The room was super spacious and it felt like home. It was close to an indoor parking garage and public transportation. This place gives the most bang for your buck!

I loved my stay at this hotel, i booked a one bedroom apartment for my first visit and was not let down. It was a valentine’s day surprise and my girlfriend loved it just as much as I did. The vintage feel was great. It was very spacious and welcoming. We both just wanted to move in. The location wasn’t bad as well it’s not that far from union square wich was great.

Stayed here for 3 nights & loved it. If you want to see the real side of San Francisco and keep away from the touristy areas, stay here.
It definitely has character. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was more like a cozy apartment than a hotel room. I found it to be extremely clean. I thought the Murphy bed (pull down) was quite charming.
The front desk service is super nice and helpful.
It is very close to high rated ( Unilocal) restaurants which is a plus.
I walked every day to my clients office which is located in the heart of union city & it was only a 20 minute walk. Hope you don’t mind hills :)

I stayed at the Steinhart Hotel for Valentine’s Day with my boyfriend and had a fabulous time!
The location was excellent. It’s right at the bottom of Nob Hill and so, it’s in a fairly safe area with a lot of sights to see in every direction. I just would not walk through the Tenderloin a few streets down unless you know exactly what you’re doing there. There are tons of spots for cheap food, art galleries and historic buildings to gawk at down Sutter street and around it.
We booked a studio apartment with a murphy bed, which I felt had a good mix of both modern and classic. The apartment had beautiful crown moulding and an interesting industrial type window. It also had a kitchen that supplied utensils, glasses, plates, etc. The room was all in all very clean and very pleasant. It’s a great place to book when you want to pretend that you live in the City!
The staff was very friendly. They offered helpful tips for the area and were happy to supply us extra pillows.
The hotel also had some interesting elements like the old time-​y hotel, the 2^nd floor sitting area with a library, and the staircase to the patio outside. It also had a very interesting vintage lobby and entrance. Very picturesque.

Positives: very friendly and earnest staff. Pretty clean. Very cool architecture.
Negative: I was in Room 403 and it smelled like industrial cleaning products over a musty smell. My friend called it «old lady smell». The staff tried to help with a fan and candles but it was really oppressive. I would have not stayed here had I known.

This place was incredible and created such a cool way to explore the city within walking distance and is just a few blocks from the main shopping at union square. It had a ton of character and the front desk staff were very accommodating and friendly. To make the most of your visit here, you should definitely book the one bedroom — very spacious and felt like it was our very own place that we owned. They also have a DVD player — bonus!

My home away from home.
This is an old-​school single family home that has been converted into apartments. It has lots of charm and is pet friendly.
I stayed here on three separate occasions for a month at a time while attending graduate school. I felt completely safe from the dual key pad entry system just to enter the building as well as the security in my apartment. It is in a very convenient location easy walking distance to Union Square, many restaurants, and grocery stores. Also close to transit lines too.
I was pleased with the cleanliness of my room and enjoyed having a kitchen to cook in. Sometimes the internet and cell phone service were a little janky, but it depended on where my room was located (I stayed in an inner room (a little slow/​patchy) and then twice on a street facing room (no problems).
A very friendly and accommodating staff. If you’re in SF for more than a week, consider staying here!

Stayed in their apartment for two weeks. This is an older hotel (They even have those old school metal gate elevators) but it was pretty comfortable. Decent size room with full kitchen (Whole Foods is only a few blocks away), dining room and wifi. Bathroom is clean but need to be renovated in my opinion. I actually think the staff there was quite friendly and the price was reasonable. I will come back again.

My wife and I stayed at the Steinhart for six weeks, while we were working in San Francisco. The staff there was lovely; Nicole was especially helpful. We were there with our dog, and he was roundly welcomed by everyone. The hotel itself is beautiful in an older style.
It’s a great, older residential hotel, and our one bedroom was very comfortable, very clean, very quiet. For a longer stay, it was just the ticket, with a full kitchen, living/​dining room, bedroom, hi-​speed wifi, concierge service, and a garden in back with a grill where we made chicken some evenings.
Our room was very bright and airy, and we had a great view of Twin Peaks & the fog rolling in each morning. Being New Yorkers, the occasional street noise didn’t bother us one bit. And the bed was very comfortable. I got some very restful shut-​eye and was made to feel quite welcome and at home by everyone.
(Some of the furniture in our room was a tad weatherbeaten, but they seem to be very keen on renovating rooms one at a time. We saw them fixing up some rooms while we were there.)

This is a nice and old school hotel. Love the old elevator with the metal gate. The service here is great. The downside is their Internet. The wifi interrupts quite a bit. However we requested for Ethernet and they installed it for us and works fine. The location is convenient and is close to all the Public transits and great restaurants in the area. Also I am loving the weekly maid service.

Just stayed at The Steinhart for a week while vacationing in one of our favorite cities in the world. The building is just lovely — quiet, historic and charming. All the front desk staff were kind and accommodating. The lobby is old-​world grand and riding the original brass elevator is an experience. The entry is key code access only and makes the building feel very secure.
This was the most homey stay we’ve had in the City and we absolutely loved having an apartment with a fully equipped kitchen at our disposal, while not having to worry about sidestepping housekeeping every morning. Our Deluxe Studio was incredibly spacious and also extremely quiet, as it was in the rear of the building, overlooking the courtyard. The layout lends to a nice sense of separation between rooms (kitchen, living/​bed room and bathroom were all spread out with a nice, wood-​floored hallway between), with really high ceilings and pleasant furnishings. A large closet in the living area was converted into office space and was a useful addition. The murphy bed was cush and comfy.
It’s an old building, so there is some evidence of wear, but this only adds to its charm, and everything in our apartment was spotlessly clean when we arrived. Amenities like laundry, cable and a strong wifi connection enhanced the experience. The clock radio with an iPod dock was a nice touch.
Despite all the debates over Tenderloin vs Nob Hill (or TenderNob), we found the street and neighborhood to be very comfortable for walking, day and night — as long as you avoid the Tenderloin and keep your eyes open as you would when walking in ANY city. The Steinhart is surrounded by some great markets, sandwich shops, diners and sidewalk cafes, as well as having a very active and colorful student population from the nearby Academy of Art, which kept the atmosphere very vibrant. The outdoor cafes were great places for people watching. Additionally, this neighborhood is very central and provides easy walking to many areas of interest in SF.
Parking nearby entailed either street parking — available overnight between 9PM and 8AM, or the nearby Butterick garage on Sutter that had reasonable overnight rates.
In all, we loved our stay at the Steinhart, and look forward to staying there again in the future.

I can’t say enough great things about this hotel. I am a San Francisco native and live in the city, and needed to book an apartment for a visiting friend. I’ve lived in SF for the last 8 years and know the neighborhoods, architecture, and prices quite well. So I was pretty picky about things, since I know what money can get here and what is possible here in terms of quality, advantageous locations, service, etc.
After much searching, I decided on the Steinhart and I was not disappointed. Since I am an SF native, I was able to actually visit the hotel in advance. It was a fantastic stay. Reasons why I ultimately decided on this hotel:
— very clean rooms
— safe and secure, which you aren’t always guaranteed in SF
— attracted families and family-​oriented occupants
— solid reviews from previous occupants
— zero hits on the national bed bug registry (I was very picky about this, as SF hotels are known to be problematic about bed bugs and that was an absolute non-​negotiable for me – many, many hotels in SF have had bed bugs including brand name hotels in SF such as Best Western, Grand Hyatt, etc)
— incredible staff… Dimiter, the general manager, was incredibly warm and accomodating. He was happy to give me a tour of the place and the room before I booked it, and followed up with us during my friend’s stay to make sure we were comfortable and taken care of.
— just west of union square, downtown, which basically means its centrally located within the tourist region so it would be convenient for me to show my friend around.
Dimiter’s warm, gentle, and welcoming attitude really gave me the assurances I needed. I was free to tour the place and he made an effort to take care of my friend while I was not around. The one bedroom apartment itself was clean, spacious, and well kept. The kitchen came fully stocked with kitchenware and utensils.
I’m not sure why other Unilocalers had such terrible experiences there, kind of makes me wonder why they were so bad when my experience was so good. I’m guessing its because there must have been a different general manager taking care of the place back when those reviews were posted.

Love this hotel! I’m not sure why other Unilocalers gave this place such low marks, but I think this place is great. I just returned from a week stay here and I loved every minute of it. Great location for easy walking access to Union Square (if you like tourists), Pacific Heights, the Filmore District, Japantown. I felt comfortable, well taken care of, and safe at all times. The area is good and REAL San Francisco and remarks about this being a rough area are false. There were far fewer panhandlers in this area than I’ve ever seen in the Union Square area. My room was clean, had a
fully loaded kitchen, the most comfortable bed I could imagine, two flat screen TVs and a great CLEAN bathroom. Another great feature of this hotel is the staff. Very caring, helpful and friendly. I discovered all of the «best of» places to eat and drink within 2 blocks of this hotel too. Best lattes at Farm: Table, best sandwiches at Bite, best local bar at Aces, best pizza at Fly… all within 2 blocks of the hotel. There’s a grocery store next door too. I was staying here on my own and never even for one second felt unsafe. I didn’t want to leave. Check Trip Advisor out for the true reviews of this hotel. It’s wonderful, and I will certainly stay here again and again.

HORRIBLE!!! Staff referred to it as Jurassic Park but that was too nice. Don’t even consider staying at this dive.

Well, this place worked for me, but I also do agree with the two negative reviews posted (it seems that other reviews have been deleted). We have a cat, didn’t want to pay the outrageous security deposits that other longer-​term stay places demanded, which I wasn’t sure would be returned, and we were seduced by the décor and reasonable (for furnished housing) rates. Upon moving in, we quickly realized that the serious urban stresses emanating from the Tenderloin absolutely do reach this far north, and several noteworthy crimes, including one fatal stabbing several feet from the front door, occurred within two blocks during our one-​month stay.
The energy of the hotel is very strange, and I’m curious about what illegal things happen in the building, per Maurice’s posting. I didn’t witness anything, but felt uneasy, like the place is in a haunted netherworld. The interior-​facing rooms are quiet, but have little sunlight exposure, and are eerily depressing. The street-​facing rooms have beautiful light, but the traffic and street noise are intolerable. The management company ought to invest in very high-​quality triple-​pane windows, which would reduce stress from street noise.
The housekeeping staff was exceptionally sweet and thorough. The beds were uncomfortably worn, but the duvet and sheets were rather luxurious. Peter, the manager, was generally great, and ensured that all issues were handled promptly. The place would be fantastic if it could be transplanted several blocks north, but it can’t be, so it makes for an interesting, but perhaps stressful, stay.

I’m highly suspicious of Carling M.‘s review, as it is the only positive review in a sea of negative ones. I have not stayed at the Steinhart, which is why I won’t give it one star, but I have toured it and agree with many of the one star reviews.
DO NOT BE FOOLED. This is a pretty, historic building, but it is definitely in the TenderNob and feels more like the Tenderloin. I agree that it’s wonderful that they allow pets (!), but so does the Nob Hill Tower, which is really in Nob Hill and a thousand times better. Unfortunately, Nob Hill Tower is only for extended stay (30+ days), but if you’re in the market for corporate/​furnished short term housing, I highly recommend it.
And also, two words: Murphy Beds. They should be outlawed.

The Steinhart Hotel has a number of one bedroom apartments with queen and king size beds. All of the studios are murphy bed only.
Although the debate regarding „lower nob hill“ versus „tendernob“ rages on, the fact is that San Francisco as a whole has a huge problem with homelessness and street people. A building’s address does not make it immune to the sad truths of our city.
I have been the General Manager of this property for over two years and have recently taken up residency in March. Anyone who has stayed here recently has had nothing but nice things to say about it. Any service issues prior to March of this year have been resolved.»

My husband and I stayed at the Steinhart hotel for a month when we relocated to San Francisco. It’s definitely overpriced and the service is horrible. For starters our mail was returned to the post office just two weeks after we arrived. The hotel manager Bothale was rude and condescending. Condescending to the point where it was really uncomfortable asking her any questions.
We checked in after a long cross country flight so naturally we wanted to sit down. Bothale approached us in a very unwelcoming matter no hello or a smile she simply wanted to know why we were there. It was a no brainer we both had our luggage & were checking in. Right off the bat she wanted our id’s and social security numbers and made copies of our id’s. Our reservation fee had been paid in advance and they had our credit card … the whole id thing & ss # was ridiculous. We’ve both checked into many hotels in the past and not once were we required to give such sensitive information. We both wondered what was next a finger print ?? After we informed her of our reservation her attitude changed slightly.
Regardless of this she was always rude and condescending anytime we spoke with her. Besides Bothale’s attitude the facilities were not up to par. The refrigerator and dish washer broke down and to top it off the day we left the building had no hot water. One more tidbit the hotel conveniently forgets to mention on their website, a few blocks down the neighborhood is shady.
