Dr. Stephen Brattesani J.

Business Owner

A 1986 graduate of the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco, Dr. Steven Brattesani strongly believes in community service. He engaged in numerous acts of heroism in his native Marina District during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. For his unselfish efforts, he received commendations from former President George Bush and the City and County of San Francisco. The USA première movie, «After The Shock,» featured Dr. Brattesani and four other earthquake heroes.

In 1993, he received the San Francisco Dental Society’s President’s Meritorious Award for his significant contributions to organized dentistry. He has served his city as a commissioner for the Park and Recreation Commission under Mayors Jordan and Brown. His many civic activities include the organizing committee for Expo ’99 at Treasure Island, San Francisco Navy League and Marina Branch N.E.R.T.

Dr. Brattesani created a plan for me to refresh my fillings over time, and uses a machine that mills porcelain replacements that perfectly fill the spaces. It’s an amazing process and works really well.
The plan is still underway; I started visting him in 2005. I have about two more to do.
The technology is amazing and yes… his services are expensive… hence, I am giving him 4 stars instead of 5. But, my replacement fillings are completely invisible… you would never know I had them. I TOTALLY recommend this guy if you can afford it.

If you have couple extra thousand that you don’t need, you could take them to Dr Brattesani.
My bill was over $ 2,000 and did not really get anything done, some poking in gums and x-rays etc and he send me to his friend to have my wisdom teeth removed who could not do it but cracked my tooth and left it into my gum.
I never asked to have any gum poking, checking how many mm my gums are etc. I don’t think it is right for dentist to do things that customer did not ask to do or even ask customer if that is what they would want to have done.
$ 2,000+ is lot to pay from your pocket specially when you get nothing for it.
He has big dental office, which is nice but that’s why he needs my $ 2,000 so he can pay for all that etc.
I did ask him to pay me back my $ 2,000 since I did not get anything for that but he did not even bother to get back to me.
All what I got was him sending me to his friend who’s care was disaster and caused me horrible pain for years and damage that will affect rest of my life.
If you like to go to do some chatting, hung out in nice office and have some extra money, this might be for you.
For dental care, it might not be the best place.
I wish I had never went there.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Brattesani’s for years, and I continue to be very happy with his work. Just got a CERAC crown done in, believe it or not, one hour. I didn’t realize how great this was before talking to others who have had to wait for days or weeks to finalize a crown.
The office is super-high-tech, and Dr. B seems to use a lot more of the tech than other dentists — which saves a lot of time.
He gets 5 well-deserved stars from me!

I would like to add that Dr. Brattesani fit me in for an emergency visit this last weekend. He is an exceptionally knowledgeable dentist that truly cares about his patients.

I’m on the fence. On the one hand, I very much like Dr. Brattesani as a person. He’s super friendly, and very good about telling you what he’s doing while h’e working. He also threw in some free x-rays because my dental insurance isn’t so great. On the other hand, the cost for services is pretty insane. I paid close to $ 550 for a couple of fillings. (Again, crappy insurance). I went to a different dentist for a root canal, and that only cost $ 430, including the filling at the end. So yeah, I’m just not sure if the chair-side manner is worth the premium price. Which is sad.
Dr. Bratessani also had a habit of writing referrals for me, without considering the fact that none of the people he referred me to were in my insurance network. That also bothered me.

Being a complete dentist-phobe, when I first entered the reception area I felt comforted by the sort of offbeat presentation of the place– goofy gadgets. toys and so on. This doesn’t have to be so painful and serious, does it? Well, what is painful is Dr. Brattesani’s manner… when you are entrusting your teeth (esp if you are phobic) and a potentially large bill to someone, you want them to be serious, professional, doctor-like. I didn’t feel comfortable with my dentist using the f-word in front of me and his assistants. He is hyper-verbal and will interrupt you when you are speaking. I don’t know if some people find this charming, but it makes me doubt his competence. Like attorneys and medical doctors, dentists should act competent and serious and professional due to the nature of their work and the cost to the client. In the end, I had to have 2 teeth extracted per Dr. Brattesani’s recommendation, although I had it done at UCSF. Needing to dialogue with the lung transplant team, the team at UCSF has called me repeatedly saying he doesn’t return calls, and he never emailed them as he promised after my first visit with him. Important stuff about the plan of action to get me all clear tooth-wise before my transplant. I have to have a perfect bill of dental heath, as I am waiting on the list for a lung transplant. Serious enough, right? I went back one last time to get the clearance from him that the extraction sites were not infected which had to be sent to my lung transplant coordinator, but I won’t be back after that.

This place has way too many toys, and guess what, you are going to pay for them. When you walk into the reception area, you start to wonder what all this stuff is.
He claims to have all the latest equipment, but his diagnostic skill are on the low end of the spectrum. On one of my first visits, he took an array of xrays and told me that I had a giant cavity (not a dental cavity) in my jaw. He then set up a video conference with some other dentist on the other side of town that was going to fix it for me for a few thousand $$. I didn’t buy this story and went to my periodontist for a second opinion. He did his own xrays and didn’t find any thing wrong with my jaw.
I let him put in a crown which worked out pretty well. It was expensive and of course my insurance didn’t pay for it. They did work out a payment plan for me, which was helpful.
He had big plans for doing more work in my mouth, most of which I didn’t understand. I was starting to lose confidence in him, so I went to someone else for my general dental needs. My new dentist requested my xrays from him. This is considered a professional courtesy among dentists here to provide when requested. He responded with photo copies of my xrays which were totally useless.
I would never recommend him to anyone, not even in an emergency.
