Sutter House

I lived in the Sutter House Apartments for 3 years. The location is very central if you work anywhere in SOMA or Financial District. I pretty much walked everywhere between the marina district, mission/​castro, hayes valley and downtown. Sutter street by polk is safe as there are so many people around, at all hours of the day. It is a very lively neighborhood — tons of bars and restaurants at your fingertips. This apartment is very close walk to both Whole Foods and Trader Joes, and is not even a full block away from the nearest Walgreens. There are three washer and dryers on site, and surprisingly I believe I only had to wait once to do my laundry in the 3 years I lived here. The staff at this apartment are very accommodating to the tenants needs. Karla was always responsive with any issues or questions I had, and made sure things got taken care of.

I was looking at apartments to move into by the Summer. After reading the reviews of this place and all the great reviews about how nice the lady was and how great she was to work with, I had high hopes in selecting this place.
However, every time I tried to call to schedule a viewing she never answered. I called her several times over a few weeks, but she never returned my calls. One morning I called her half expecting her to even answer when she finally did. When she did answer she sounded like I was wasting her time because I told her I wouldn’t be able to make the Open House because of work. She agreed to meet up with me to another day so I would be able to see it, but she sounded annoyed. When I showed up to view the apartment on the day we agreed on, she wasn’t even there. I waited about 20 – 25 minutes before leaving and trued calling her. Once again she never answered her phone and never returned any of my calls to reschedule.
I was very disappointed because I was expecting a nice, helpful lady to help me find a new place and instead I got the exact opposite. It just wasn’t meant to be I guess, which is fine by me because I ended up finding an ever better place to live anyway.

Great location for me — the building was halfway between my work in Pacific Heights and Downtown/​gym. Right off of Polk Street. Awesome Arab food all over the neighborhood: Yemenese, Tunisian, Moroccan, Pakistani, shawarma. A half-​block from Walgreens, one block to the post office, easy access to the Golden Gate transit (101, 70, 80), also close to the 2, 3, 1, 19, 47, & 49 buses. Often took the 27 home from downtown after shopping since it was mostly uphill. The building is quiet and cozy, and incredibly well maintained. The laundry room in the basement was a great bonus. Elevator was always clean and functional. Secure double gated entry as well. They are renovating some of their units with new stainless appliances, tile kitchen floors, and hardwood floors. My unit was pre-​remodel but the carpet was brand new when I moved in and looked great for the two years that I was there. It had some of the great vintage San Francisco touches: claw foot bathtub, ornate grills, crown moldings, kitchen built-​ins. HUGE walk-​in closet. Big beautiful windows and a pretty brick building next door — gave my apartment the feeling of having an exposed brick wall. My neighbors were really quiet but those that I did have the opportunity to meet were very friendly. And Karla, the manager, is fabulous!
Only cons were borderline close to the Tenderloin — although this turned out to be a pro because really it is an ok neighborhood and the price was great — and the parking garage across the street was a little unreliable for me. Kids downstairs at the drop in youth center were typically very respectful.

I moved in to Sutter House Apartments the Labor Day just before ⁹⁄₁₁. And I’ve been a MOST happy camper ever since! As other reviewers say, Karla — the building manager — deserves all the kudos. Everything from refunding money very occasionally lost in the laundry to having the building public areas painted every other year to getting the handyman quickly to your apartment in case of any problem to having pests completely under control — Karla handles it all efficiently & with pleasant laughter. *** I live in a studio. I used to live in a one-​bedroom in another building, & the 2 kitchens are the same size, that is, this studio’s kitchen is VERY roomy! I have & use one of the Murphy beds. *** You can’t do better for your dollar than at SHA …

This is the fifth building I’ve lived in in San Francisco, and I have to say, the on-​site building manager Karla is the most responsive and helpful I’ve had. Building maintenance takes place on a regular schedule, without fail. The apartment itself is comfortable and bright, and close to almost anything you might want to access. You barely have to move at all to be at a great restaurant or café. Short jog to Ft. Mason to be near the water. I won’t lie — the neighborhood isn’t quiet. But that is not the fault of the building. No real complaints at all about Sutter House. I’ve been happy here.

I have lived in Sutter House Apartments for the past five years. Any time I have a problem it is taken care of promptly and efficiently. The building is cleaned 2x a week and have pest control every month. It is secure and as safe as you can get. In the five years I have been here I have never had a problem with safety. The building is a wonderful place to live due to the diligence of the building manager (Karla is soooooooo awesome!!!) to keep the building clean and tenants happy. I would recommend that if your looking for a building with charm and with in walking distance to food, fun, and amenities this is the building for you.

I agree with the other tenants! My husband and I have lived at Sutter House almost one year. It is our first place together, and we’ve loved how clean and safe it is. Nothing goes by unnoticed by the apartment manager, which is a truly wonderful thing. Laundry in the building is a nice luxury. The elevator is great, especially when we first moved in, as it is not your typical San Francisco 100-​year-​old-​building kind of elevator, but a nice large-​sized modern elevator that could fit our bookshelves, bed, etc. Once again, the upkeep by the apartment manager is great, and response time to any problems has been immediate! The neighborhood is also nice, as it is right at the corner edge of both Nob Hill and Russian Hill. Just a block or two walk and you are surrounded by many cute shops and cafes. We are quite close to the Academy of Art as well. Prices are good for the area (being so centrally located) and it was the biggest kitchen we could find in a studio in this area! We can actually fit a small dining table and three chairs in our kitchen. When we were apartment hunting last year we couldn’t believe how many studios in the Nob Hill area had ridiculously small kitchens or efficiency kitchens. Sutter House Apartments are nice, clean, and have been a great first home for us!

I absolutely enjoyed living at Sutter house. It was my first apartment in San Francisco and I lived there for more than a year and a half.
The location is great. It’s centrally located in Lower Nob Hill /​Tendernob but it’s north enough that the area is clean. Unlike a lot of the other neighborhoods in SF you have everything you could want in walking distance: any kind of food you could desire, several coffee shops, a movie theatre, two gyms, 3 grocery stores, 2 Walgreen’s, banks, several dry cleaners, monthly parking garages and some great bars for local drinks. It’s also in walking distance to Russian Hill, Civic Center and Union Square. I used to work in the Financial District and it would take about 22 minutes to walk down Sutter to my office.
The building is secure. The interior is very well kept and cleaned often. To be honest, the interior is a little dated but who really hangs downstairs or in the hallways. Also, I’ve never seen anything broken in the public areas of the building. There are handymen that come by weekly and have come in emergencies as well. It has an ELEVATOR! Which is awesome because their are 5 floors and a basement where the laundry room is located. It rarely breaks down.
I miss the convenience of having a laundry room in the building. The Laundry is located in the basement of the building and can only be accessed with a building key, so it’s secure. It’s 24 hours which means you can wash laundry when ever. The machines are reasonable priced compare to the laundromats in SF.
I had an interior studio, facing the west on the 4^th floor. It was a very clean and open space with lots of light. I had a huge closet because there used to be a Murphy bed attached to it that was now painted shut. I heard there are still some Murphy beds in the building. The kitchen set up was a great space with a new and clean fridge and gas stove with built in counter space, cub boards, shelves and could fit a small square dinner table. The room was separate from the kitchen and easily fit my queen bed, love seat, coffee table and entertainment center.
Finally, Karla, the on-​site building manager is FANTASTIC! She’s very personable, helpful and accessible. She always made sure I was a happy tenant and handled any matter appropriately and quickly.

I lived in the Sutter House apartments for two years and had a great experience there. I still miss my sunny apartment there and walking to all the restaurants and bars on Polk Street. (Note: my apartment faced the street so I did get a lot of street noise but I am a heavy sleeper and slept right through it.) And yeah, it’s the TenderNob and you are next to a Youth Center but this is SF…
Karla, the Manager, is warm, helpful, and available. She is good about getting back to you with any questions/​concerns.
Minus one star because there are only 3 washing machines and 3 dryers for an entire building, that often ate my change and had me doing my laundry at 4am in the morning.
