Sutter Tailors

Does anyone know how to reach Frank? His landlord forced him to move out of his location on Sutter and I have not been able to reach him at his old phone number. I’m hoping someone might have spoken with him recently. Frank has been an amazing tailor for me in the past, but he has a suit of mine and I have not heard anything from him in almost 2 weeks. Sorry, but Frank is a one-​star kind of tailor after the experience that both my husband and I had. The first time I went to him, the tailoring was great, albeit a little slow. The second and third times, not so much. He does great work, but I really don’t appreciate being given one quote when I drop things off, then Frank asking me for a significant amount more when I come to pick up my clothes. Not cool, ethical or businesslike. See ya, Frank.

I had gone to Frank to work on about 3 pairs of pants. I honestly think he lost a pair, but I couldn’t figure it out. The workmanship was good, don’t get me wrong. Then I would’ve given him about 3 stars. But I had some of the same issues one of the prior posters had. He told me 1 week for the pants, and it took 4 weeks. I don’t care how good he is, there is no excuse for late work. When I asked him why it’s late, it’s always the same excuse…“So busy.” «You should have called in advance.» «Which pants do you want done first? I will do those.» Are you kidding me?
But really, the reason for 1 star is because of the last time I was there. (And it will be the last time I will ever go there.) He had told me that the cost to shorten sleeves was $ 15, $ 30 if I wanted to have the cuff and the placket moved. When I brought my shirts there, it went up to $ 45! When I asked him why, he said that the shirt was more complicated. Then as he wrote up the receipt, he raised the price to $ 50!!! And that is per shirt!!! NEVER AGAIN. I do not trust him, I don’t care how good his work may be. I understand a tough economy, but that is no way to keep loyal customers.
Instead I went to Pink where I bought the shirts. They charged me $ 14 AND moved the placket. Beautiful work from the tailor they use.

Frank is a very good tailor, but he works alone so plan in advance. I’ve had him work on suits, denim and pants and he’s capable with all. Great with proportion and profile. Obviously knows his craft and can explain why and how. Said my pre-​tailored pants made my ass look like a baby’s butt – which was not a good thing by the way!

I absolutely love Frank! Thanks to the excellent reviews given by other Unilocalers, I had the best experience at Sutter Tailors. I’ve been getting my designer jeans tailored at Cable Car Tailors since 2001 because they always did a great job and it was only $ 5.00 to get them hemmed! It’s been a minute since I’ve gone to them so I decided to check out their reviews on Unilocal.To my surprise, they’ve raised their prices and their workmanship has been inconsistent. After doing some searching I decided to go to Sutter Tailors because of the 5 star reviews.
I got a pair of designer jeans hemmed and they were perfect! Frank gives you a choice of 3 different styles with prices ranging from $ 10-​$ 25 depending on the style of the hem. I got the mid priced hem and I am very pleased. I also got a baseball jersey custom fit to my size since the smallest size is a men’s small which looked like a dress on me. The day I took my clothes in to be altered, Frank actually cut the jersey in front of me to make sure it was exactly how I wanted it. He also gave me a mini lesson on sewing while he quickly stitched up the jersey to show me what it would ultimately look like. The jersey looks like it was never even tailored and it fits perfectly!
I told him to take his time since I was in no rush for my clothes and they were ready in 2 weeks. I was really impressed with the quality of his workmanship, his friendly demeanor, and expertise in tailoring. I am very selective when it comes to good quality and Frank at Sutter Tailors is the best!!!

I’m sorry, but I can’t give Frank more stars. I’m sure he is a good tailor, but I prefer to go to someone else. I was really, really hoping to become a regular because I read some great Unilocal reviews.
When I went in the first time, he ran out of receipts to write on. He wrote the amounts on a business card for me to show him when I picked them up. I paid him with a check.
I called every week to see if it was ready, and he said that it was going to be done the following week. This occurred for like 3 weeks, even though he had originally said it would take about a week. But that’s okay, I was willing to wait for quality tailoring.
When I returned to pick up my clothes, he said that because I didn’t have a receipt (because he ran out earlier) he thought I might be cheating him out of money. He didn’t even believe that the handwriting on the business card was his… BUT IT WAS! Apparently someone had scammed him before. Lucky for me, I brought my checkbook and had a carbon copy of the check. I said that the check had cleared, because I had seen it on my online banking account. I kept insisting that I was honest and that I had paid already. Even then, Frank was skeptical! He must have forgotten that he cashed the check, but if he’s that forgetful, he should maintain records of everything!
All this, while a couple of his regulars were standing outside, watching and listening. It was humiliating. Workmanship was good, but I have to take my business elsewhere. I mean, what would have happened if I had paid in cash? What a bad first experience and I will not be going back.

Frank is a total old-​school craftsman. He does great work on time and at reasonable prices. He’s been my tailor for years (and I’ve tried some others and been disappointed along the way).
I’ve had him do really simple things like hemming pants and complex things like re-​working the shoulders of a jacket. Hell, I’ve even had him do an extensive modification to jacket because I had a design in my head but no skills to make it a reality. He does all of it superbly – with a smile and an quip.

Frank is an artisan, in the truest sense of the word. He works on your items with care and attention. And if you are inclined to understand his craft, like I am, he’ll explain exactly what he did for you.
I just picked up a handstitched Issey Miyake jacket from him that, quite simply, most other tailors would’ve been unable to fix. Frank not only did the job, but he did absolutely the most beautiful work, making it appear as though my ripped seams never existed.
This is my first Unilocal review, and the only reason why I registered was to big-​up Frank, and send some other fine-​clothed folks his way.

Thank God for Frank! I can’t get a real grown-​up/​lawyer suit in my size because such things just aren’t made in the US, but Frank makes that problem disappear with his fast, skilled tailoring.
He takes my suit pants from too long and too baggy in the butt to the perfect length, fitting in the back and completely resizes the entire length of the legs to take up the slack from bringing the back in. Does that make sense? Anyway, he’s done 4 suit pant reconstructions for me at $ 50 a pop, which I’m glad to pay because it’s done fast, well and makes it possible for me to wear a real suit.
He also shortened a blazer for me so it doesn’t cover my back pockets anymore. You can’t even tell it was altered. He did the entire suit for $ 70.
He also does dress tailoring. He showed me his bridal work room when I saw I had gotten engaged. Based on the work he’s done for me so far, I’d totally take my dress to him… if/​when that time comes…

Frank is awesome! This place is a little hidden gem. He does a great job on jeans (keeps the original hem) and works pretty quicky. It is a small space and he gets busy around the holiday’s, but does a great job and is extremely nice! He only takes cash or check.
