History

Established in 1946.

1946

The Volunteer Bureau of San Francisco is founded by the Junior League of San Francisco as the city’s central agency for volunteer placement. This clearinghouse function lasted into the 1990’s when the organization changed its name to The Volunteer Center and shifted focus.

1990s

With the advent of the internet, volunteer opportunity matching went online and became accessible to the masses everywhere at anytime. The Volunteer Center took the opportunity to work more deeply with nonprofits and businesses on developing better and stronger volunteer engagement practices, while offering better and more reliable information about the real needs for support from community based organizations.

2000+

The Volunteer Center further specialized support services for businesses and nonprofits to create greater impact through board building programs, training, consulting, and cross-sector convening and partnering to find solutions to age old community problems.
