Trapped in a Room with a Zombie

This was SO much fun! We went in a group of 4, and there were two other very friendly men who were in our group, so 6 in all.
You start off in a separate room and discuss the basic rules. I get scared easily and didn’t know what to expect. So i was nervous!
We get into the room and you have 60 minutes to solve a WHOLE bunch of clues that aren’t related to zombie things, and every 5 minutes the chain gets longer. The clues are so clever and hard and the time went so fast!
The zombie isn’t scary, but that wasn’t the point. You cannot get touched or youre out and cannot solve clues. The zombie (Dr.Oxy) gives you so much adrenaline making it so much more fun.
Overall the experience was amazing. Location is iffy but the experience makes up for it. Great idea!

It’s a really great concept — and a lot of fun. The main issues are finding the place off of Auto Repair Row and there is only one room — ONE. We plan a corporate meeting here — and there is only one room. As a result. If you have a large group — expect to be sitting on your butt for an extremely long time (takes an hour to complete the room). So you just sit around for two hours with nothing to do, and the ‘waiting’ room really has nothing to occupy your time.
However, the puzzles were very challenging and the actors did an excellent job! It’s just a very tiny venue. It would be wise for them to try to keep the other groups in the waiting room occupied with some project or have a map of things to do in the area. A scavenger hunt of the local area would be a great idea — it was just really boring waiting for your time to be called to escape the Zombie room.

On a cold, rainy night in San Francisco, my boyfriend and I stumbled upon this adventure activity and decided to give it a try. So glad we did! I checked in and got my free water bottle (woohoo!).
Parking at the meters outside the building are free after 7 PM — we had no trouble finding a spot. We enjoyed an adult beverage or two at a local bar before beginning our adventure (definitely made it even more entertaining than it already was). Our group consisted of my boyfriend and I and then a group of 9 college kids. They all knew each other but welcomed us into the «team.»
Such a cool concept! Groupon had a good deal going on (that’s how we found out about it) but it sold out quickly. Our team «survived» — barely. We escaped the room with only 3 minutes left.
Cool concept and great value — very fun date or activity to do with your friends!

Check in for a free water bottle! So funnn! This was my first escape room so I didn’t know what to expect. The place is definitely in a sketchy area so make sure you don’t park too far or go alone. Ring the doorbell to get in.
Before going in, there is a small room to hang your stuff. My group of 6 went in and inside wasn’t hot or warm. Wearing a thin jacket would have still been fine. There were actually a lot of riddles to solve and clues to find. Our zombie was fun and entertaining. I would recommend going with a few people. Not only for the extra brains, but as zombie bait hehe ;) Be open minded and you’ll have a lot of fun.

We escaped!!! This is the second escape room event I’ve been to and they are definitely a blast! I highly recommend these for families and work teams. They’re great team building activities. The riddles range from easy to difficult and they’re are too many to work on by yourself so make sure to work together as a team!

Zombies are not my thing. I love escape rooms, particularly when I get an ah ha moment from solving a clue. I don’t like being chased around by a guy on a chain who could pass for a homeless man.
The location is creepy enough and I almost wanted to go home when I realized how low-​budget and dirty this was. I can’t believe this escape room charges about the same price as other escape rooms. Out of the 5 I’ve tried, this is by far the sketchiest, cheesiest, lamest and dumbest room.
The puzzles are easy to solve but the «challenge» is that you can’t get to the clues because of the ridiculous «zombie» playing tag with you.
I couldn’t concentrate on solving puzzles at all; in fact, I spent most of the time standing in the corner trying to avoid a creepy stranger from touching me. I couldn’t wait for the 60 minutes to be up.

What a fun evening! I’ve been wanting to do one of these room escape adventures for a long time, and finally got a group of friends brave enough to come with. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the full 12 to commit, so there were 5 of us, and 7 strangers. I think this held us back in some ways, as one of the other seven ran around the room with a clue, and we couldn’t get it from their hands to solve it.
So the host was fun as well as the zombie– Dr. Oxy. I’ve seen some other party poopers on here complain that things were used/​not super high tech but whatevs to them. They have hundreds of people coming though this place– what do you expect? Some other people complained that it was hot– they do seem to have fans and an AC unit and we were quite comfortable, so perhaps this is an adjustment the business has made. YES, it’s cheesy, but in case you didn’t notice, you singed up for the Trapped In A Room With A Zombie adventure– were you expecting something serious?
It’s a helluva lot more challenging than I thought it was going to be– and yes we were definitely under the influence. Our host had to give us several hints and i definitely felt overwhelmed. In the end, we all became zombie food (though if this were a real zombie I’d like to think I’d have this situation handled and could escape). Our host told us how we should have solved it and I still don’t understand all of it.
Overall, a great time, and I’ll definitely come back to do the sequel!

This was pretty fun! Unless you do not like zombies – which I don’t…but I gotta hand it to the guy who played the zombie – superb performance!
Very easy to get distracted because there is a zombie in the room rolling around, and there are rules re not leaving anything on the floor etc. But overall – we had a great time and we escaped!
One star off for the sketchy location and how hot it got inside… but otherwise, awesome time.

Our host was really cheesy and tried to be subtly funny, but I don’t think that worked out well.
In terms of the experience, it’s on a sketchy street and when we showed up at the place we weren’t sure if we were at the right place because it looked like a run down building with a rusty gate and just in general SKETCH. Also the interior wasn’t that great either besides the room they take the pictures in.
The room revolves around the premise of an experiment gone wrong where somebody was turned into a zombie and they’re in the room with you and you have to escape while this zombie distracts and chases people around.
The problems were pretty unrelated to the theme at hand, like nothing followed the storyline of showing us how the zombie got there or how escaping the room was related. The puzzles were cool but were generally un-​themed. And the zombie was also really distracting and I didn’t find it was fun at all, having been to many game rooms. Problems weren’t that fun to solve and some were just annoying where they revolved around actually completing a task that was iffy because of hard to use equipment or just bad physical set up of a problem.
I also don’t like how even though it is team oriented, most of the problems have 3 or 4 people working on them because you have to unlock problems to solve more problems and it was like a thin pipeline of problems (we had 15 people which the room said they were able to handle). Other rooms which catered to large groups had many problems that could be solved asynchronously so it was about 1 — 2 people per problem. Which makes it more fun and gives you more freedom to think.
I had a better experience at Real Escape Game which is also in SF and I’ve been to a bunch all over Toronto such as Break Out Adventures, Escape It and Xscaper Arts. So comparing to these places this place wasn’t that great. We also didn’t escape, but I’m not a sore loser because I haven’t escaped probably half the rooms I’ve been to but they were still fun, a lot of thinking and follow the general theme.
Also they only have 1 escape room, not many options.

This particular stretch of Bryant between 4^th & 5^th Streets is especially deserted on the weekends, save for a couple junkies. The building that houses the escape room is nondescript; a sandwich board indicates you’ve arrived at your dreadful destination.
Premise of Trapped in a Room with a Zombie is just that — for an hour, you & your group of up to 12 look for clues & solve puzzles, all while a zombie on a chain in the middle of the room threatens to eat your brain. Every five minutes, the chain gets longer. Get «eaten» (tagged out, basically) & you’re banned from helping the team look for clues but you can still verbally participate from the sidelines.
Our facilitator Dr. Oxy was creepy, witty, & helpful. He’s in the room to nudge you in the right direction a couple times if you’re way off base.
Pretty low budget, room set up appeared bare & items are well-​worn, & for these reasons, I’m giving them 4 instead of 5 stars. Still, I recommend them for stimulating fun.
Tips:
– dress in light layers if you get warm easily as you’ll be running around like a madwoman (or madman.)
– I don’t know if the deal is still available, but I found $ 16 tickets on goldstar (+ $ 4 fee.)
Go! But stay away from the zombie!

Awesome time.
I rolled in here on a team building exercise with my workmates. I had low low expectations of the experience, but as soon as it kicked off I was sold.
The entire experience was awesome and I had so much fun solving the riddles with my co-​workers. I don’t know if we became a tighter team, but I do know that everyone had a great time. The room is warm like everyone says, thats no bullshit, wear a t-​shirt!

It was a fun experience although we didn’t finish. They got us all rattled up in the beginning and we all huddled in the dark for a minute. It’s a great chance to get to know your team mates or friends. The zombie guy was awesome and so was the host. Don’t forget to tip them! They play great characters and deserve it!

I went last night with my friends and it was a great experience! A few of them had done similar puzzle rooms before, but not with the zombie before. The zombie actor was very sweet and didn’t tag any of us even though he totally could have. At one point, we started singing/​tapping with the zombie and my friend busted out some freestyling rap and it was great.
PROS:
— The puzzles are real brainteasers and will have you hunting all around the room for clues. Think obstacle course as opposed to sit-​down puzzles.
— The zombie getting released every 5 min puts you on your toes. It does distract from the actual puzzle solving to a certain extent because you’re guarding from them half the time, but it adds a distinct feel to this puzzle room that other themed puzzle rooms don’t have.
— The scientist does a round at the end highlighting everyone’s accomplishments so it definitely ends on a good note, even if you didn’t actually escape from the room. Good for team building!
— Our scientist-​coordinator person was friendly and made no assumptions about gender, which was great!
— Friendly zombie! Or as friendly as zombies get, I guess!
CONS:
— The room/​building seems to be very poorly ventilated, so in the summer (like now) it’s very, very hot. We were all sweating by the end (can’t imagine what the poor zombie actor goes through!).
— There isn’t much parking in that area, so you might need to park a little further down the street and walk.
— The clues are fairly low-​tech, so overuse of the objects may cause some of the writing to fade or the locks to not be perfectly aligned. Some of the stuff written was a little hard to read because of the fading.
— NOT physical-​handicap friendly, unfortunately. There’s a lot of running around for the clues and there are no elevators to get up to the second floor. Probably not that disability friendly either, since some of the clues are hard to read/​see.
MY EXPERIENCE:
I went with a group of 12, which was the max for the room. We were going to huddle beforehand to organize our strategy, but got pulled into the set-​up a little early, so missed that part. I think it would have definitely helped to be more organized, especially with so many people in the room. Might have been easier with fewer people and/​or clearer idea of strategy.

Didn’t know it was this much fun to be trapped in a room with a zombie. Let’s do it again!
There were nine in our group of friends who wanted to brave this adventure. Boy, was it exciting! The «assistant professor» or game master was awesome. He explained everything thoroughly and was very entertaining. Then we were off to our doom. The room was like a living room sized room. There were random objects in the room and as soon as we got in we started to look for clues and tried to solve the riddles. I must say, they were pretty clever on the riddles… then a weird buzzer went off and «Dr. Ozzy», the female zombie, came out! That was crazy! The lady zombie was awesome! She interacted with us making this experience even more fun! She really kept us on our toes. At one point, she even asked me to sing Disney songs which entertained her, giving my comrades time to solve the riddles. Sadly, we didn’t get out in time, but we were so close! Then the game master announced his observations in the end and applauded each one of the team for their effort. That was a really nice gesture and really made us grateful for each person’s part in the game. We may not have escaped this time, but we’re coming back for Chapter 2!
I highly recommend this to everyone who wants an unforgettable adventure with friends, family and even strangers!

I have been wanting to do one of these escape room things for some time so I was super excited when my employer had an event here with our summer interns. I have nothing to compare this to so this review is probably as much for the concept itself as it is for this specific company.
I can’t comment on price/​value because I didn’t pay. Also I think we may have booked a private experience because even though we only had 9 people we didn’t have any strangers with us.
We didn’t make it out before our 60 minutes were up :(They say only 30% of the groups do. In our defense, nobody in our group had ever done this kind of thing before so none of us really had any idea what to expect. I think if you have someone who’s done this before who can be a group leader you have a much better chance of getting out. They also said we were super close (they probably say that to everyone!) but when they explained the remaining pieces of the puzzle at the end it sure felt like we were pretty far away. At the end they go around the room and say what each person did well (positive comments only). It’s a bit cheesy, but it’s nice for the team-​building aspect.
The game doesn’t change so once you’ve done it you can’t do it again but they let you come back for free with friends who have never done it before and be a silent observer (who can signal visually) so that’s pretty cool.
I personally would have liked the game much more without the zombie — I’m sure it’s a big plus to many people (and no slam at the zombie himself, who was a great actor) but the part I most enjoyed was the actual puzzling and the zombie was just a distraction/​interference from that because we couldn’t go to parts of the room near him (which, by the end of the game, was basically the whole room).
The neighborhood its in is definitely pretty grungy. I was very glad I didn’t have to park my car around there.

I’ve done my fair share of «Escape» style games, all from the other company in Japantown. Those are a whole lot of fun, but the interaction with the zombie was incredible! I never thought I’d read a book to a zombie, or be stuck in a corner with his head inches away from my feet as I was the distraction to keep my team of mostly strangers able to focus on the game. We actually one, with 30 seconds or so left on the hour long clock.
Plus, the fact I found parking right outside the front door… in San Francisco… felt surreal. But the puzzles were really cool — I didn’t do a lot of them myself, but I did get to contribute some and it was truly a blast. Our host was charming and kind, and the fact that he is there keeping tabs on what we’re all doing and gives us a report at the end is really really cool.
I think the other company is worth trying first, just so you can understand how amazing this is in comparison. Both are wonderful, but this takes the cake! Fun, interesting puzzles and wonderful humor… you can only do each one once, and I lucked out with a group of really engaged folks. If you don’t want to take that risk, bring a group of 10 friends who you want to be trapped in a room with for an hour!
Oh yes, and wear deodorant and light clothing… it gets hot in there!

This had to be one of the funnest experiences ever as an adult. Let me say that this experience had me on my toes the entire time. There was searching around the room to try and find clues to solve puzzles. Ultimately, our crew of people didn’t make it through, but it was fun dying… hehe.
These puzzles are certainly some brain-​teasers, and collaborative efforts are quite necessary in order to get very far in this. A friend and I were randomly paired with a group of strangers. This did present it’s own challenges in that we were complete strangers trying to work together, but we did better than I’d anticipated. Bringing a group of friends could be useful in overcoming this obstacle, but I’m not sure there would be too much different that would have made this any easier.
The downside was that they only had one room, so basically, after that, there was no repeating. Recently, they released a new room, but I haven’t had a chance to go and check it out yet, but I’m expecting that it will certainly be the same level of awesomeness. The staff who developed these puzzles certainly put a lot of though into them, and they are solvable to say the least.
I look forward to taking on the zombie again. Maybe next time, we’ll be the ones on the other side of the door while the zombie is left behind. This experience is a must do for any San Franciscan who loves a good puzzle or crazy adventure.

This was a really fun time. Slightly more difficult than I expected, but also more fun than I expected as well. I won’t spoil anything for anyone, but don’t worry, there is a guide in the room and everything is fun and safe.
The place was a little difficult to find and there was almost no parking on the street when we went. There was no real sign outside, besides bits of colored tape that formed «Zombie Room Escape». If I looked really fast or just walked by I would have missed it. I would have thought it was an abandoned building or something.
The lobby was really cute. They had stats and pictures of all the people that had tried to escape the room. It was really cool to be able to see all of the people. Overall, I had a really fun experience. I am totally hooked!

After trying out all the escape rooms around SF, we finally decided to try this one.
The host was super nice and friendly. I really liked him. But the room itself could of been better. The room was smaller than any other SF Escape Rooms I’ve been to. It got really hot in there was well… especially with 11 other people. I really think that they should limit the maximum number to around 8 people because of smaller room + there’s a killer zombie in the room.
In my opinion, the zombie was really rude. I don’t know if it was the way he was suppose to act or because it was the end of the day and wanted to go home. But his attitude really brought down the excitement. The puzzles and clues were on par with other escape rooms.
This was the only room that I felt like I had actually spent a hour in. And it was EXTREMELY hot in there. After about 10 minutes in this room I wanted to leave. The clues were not really thought out like the other escape rooms. There was no actually flow or common theme with the clues. It really seem like it was just a jumble of random things put together and they call it a escape room.
Hint: They have a rule that you can’t run in the room, but that doesn’t mean the zombie can’t!
Hint#2: Even if you get tagged by the zombie, don’t give up! Help your teammates solve mental puzzles.

I hate to say this. But I wouldn’t recommend this escape room. The room didn’t have an actual plot and it was extremely uncomfortable being in there.

This was my first time participating in a room escape and it was so much fun!!!
The whole experience was very well organized and the zombie was awesome! Went with a bunch of friends and we escaped with a minute to spare…
Apparently trapped in a room with a zombie 2 will be coming out soon, so we will be back for round two!
Thanks to the people that put this together… Was a ton of fun!
