Triptych

Before moving out of the area I used to go to Tryptych quite frequently. Was saddened to see the For Sale sign as I happened to pass through the Neighborhood years later.
I had a usual and stuck with it on every visit– Crab cake Benedict and usually a bottomless mimosa. The food wasn’t gourmet, and the service wasn’t the best (frequently they didn’t l mark my Opentable reservation as arrived so I didn’t earn points), but it was only a block away from my place and did in a pinch.
I’ll miss you Tryptych!

Extensive brunch menu and a nice atmosphere, but nothing outside of the box. Good place to gather with friends and have a solid brunch food.
They have outdoor patio which is very pleasant on a warm day.
Service was good.

Food:
Sweet potato waffle fries were yummy to start off with. Can’t go wrong with some good olé tater tots either. Disappointed with the bacon… not very thick or juicy… mediocre bacon. The Chicken Apple sausage omelette was ok, the eggs didn’t really have much taste. Didn’t care for the hollandaise sauce either. Mimosas were delicious of course, and didn’t give me a headache! We tried the mango, fresh squeezed OJ, and sangria mix. The fave was the sangria mix.
Service:
Service was friendly, a bit slow bringing food out even though not very packed during brunch. Few things missing in our order as well, but server quick to bring the missing items out. It was also weird that the restaurant cancelled my OpenTable reservations… not sure why, but I didn’t get my points.
Atmosphere:
Cute & quaint with lots of art. I wish I made reservations in the back garden patio! It looked so cute!
Overall, it was an ok experience here.

Tomatoes were ripe
Sweet potato fries were pretty good

No wait to be seated
Cons:
Dirty water glass (finger prints and something crusty on the edge)
Burger was overcooked
Some ordered items were unavailable
Beignets were surprisingly cold
Took a really long time to get the waiter’s attention
There was a hair (probably dog or cat fur) across my food
Couldn’t finished chicken sandwich because the chicken was too chewy
Credit card machine was down (would recommend checking out Square)

First impression of walking in this place was a «hipster-​ish» vibe. Not normally a place I’d walk in, but I had two work lunches here so I came in with an open mind.
First time I was here I ordered an eggs benedict option which was amazing. The second time I had the fire burger which was also good. The sides like the fries do a good job of filling you up — I recommend the sweet potato fries, they’re very good. The quality of the food is pretty good!
But for me, I just felt like the place falls short of the «standing ovation» experience or the 4 stars. Food takes a very long time to come out — so don’t eat here if you’re in a hurry. That’s not going to work out. This place is a 3.5 for me really.
Highlight of Triptych for me? The Disco posters in the shitter in the back of the restaurant.
Do yourself a favor and have a weekend Mimosa brunch here and not a working lunch — the unrushed vibe with a little bubbly will go well here.

Seems like they cater to the mimosa crowd and the food is an afterthought. Beignets were undercooked and slimy inside. (I felt ill afterwards) Eggs Benedict were cooked past a good hard-​boiled, yet the English muffins were soggy. Also, there hollandaise sauce is too watery and sour to make a good Benedict anyway. All that being said, the service was friendly and fast.

My wife and I were really excited to see our friends from the Bay Area since we haven’t seen most of them for over 2 years since our wedding back in Hawaii and we were hoping that Triptych would provide a nice setting for our breakfast gathering.
The morning started off well as we were seated immediately and offered great service. We had ordered their beignets which I closely compare to Hawaii’s malasadas but not as great haha.
We then ordered our main breakfast dishes where we ordered a variety of stuff including some of their popular dishes like crab cake benedict0 and the chorizo omelet. Everyone loved their food and the place provided a great setting for perfect catching up conversations. The servers were very nice and checked up on us.
Where it went downhill is when the lunch hour rush hit, the restaurant began to become very crowded and our main waiter stopped checking up on us. It took at minimum 20 minutes for him to notice that we were done with our dishes and ready for our check. It took at least another 20 minutes for him to notice that our check was ready to be processed. If it wasn’t for this experience this review would’ve had gone much better, but I’m removing 2 stars because of the horrible service at the end and I’m big on customer service especially with restaurants in this price range.
Not sure when I’ll be back to San Francisco to give them another shot, but hope this was just a one off event because we loved the food.

Their food are really good but a bit pricey. The waiter was very nice and I like the ambiance and their music

I’ve been here twice now, once for brunch and once for dinner. Both times, the food was absolutely delicious. For dinner last night I had the fried chicken; it was served with a delicious maple syrup /​carrot reduction, and it turned good fried chicken into something memorable. I also found their beer menu to be really well done.
For brunch a few weeks back, my girlfriends parents were in town, and we all had some great brunch food. They were really impressed, as was I.
Can’t recommend this place enough. They’ve made me a regular.

Perfect!
Sunday night for a group of 9 and we almost had the place to ourselves. The server was so gracious and sweet with our large (kind of loud) group.
We had an array of dishes and everyone was happy. Only dish that was less than stellar was the paella. Everything else (rocket salad, ravioli, burger, osso buco, vegan entrees, etc.) was delicious and the desserts were tasty as well (flan, beignets, chocolate cake).
Service and décor were amazing! Loved the ambiance and vibe of the place and will definitely put in my dinner rotation.

This review is not about the food or service, though both were underwhelming. It was about the terrible treatment of employees by the owner of the restaurant (my friend confirmed that the man in charge was, in fact, the owner).
Dear owner of Triptych,
There is absolutely no reason to EVER treat anyone the way I witnessed you treating your employees today. To speak in such disrespectful tones to your employees, in front of customers no less, is not only harmful to your business (because people work best, and thus make you more money, in environments when they feel supported and empowered), but cruel to those that depend on you for their livelihood.
A few of the quotes I heard today.
«Don’t talk to me. If I need you, I will talk to you. Don’t talk to me.»
«If I tell you to do something, you do it within 30 seconds. Do you understand me?»
«You follow me wherever I go. Never leave my side. If you make a mistake like that again…»
You do not pay these people enough to talk to them that way. And the irony is that they provided us with BETTER SERVICE than you did, and you are the owner! We had to get your attention to order food and to get the check, even though the restaurant was slow, because you wouldn’t stop verbally berating the man behind the bar. And when we asked for the check, instead of getting it for us, you launched into another tirade at another employee about how she wasn’t doing her job.
Look in a mirror. Hire a manager that can actually manage people. And learn some respect for others. I’ve never written a review about bad food or service, because I understand that mistakes happen and people have bad days. What I can’t forgive is dehumanizing those that work under you in a public and shaming fashion.

…I’m not sure where to begin with this place. I came in to this restaurant with a groupon for a bottle of wine (up to $ 36) and two entrees (up to $ 18 each), with us paying for the difference if we went over the amount. I got the paella, which was really really good, loaded with clams and shrimp, but the bf’s entrée wasn’t memorable at all. It might’ve been a beef dish served with mashed potatoes. The wine we got was pretty good, the chardonnay from cedar woods, and we split the chocolate molten cake for dessert, which was overcooked and not molten at all. The food might’ve merited three stars from me.
The service knocks this place down a star. It wasn’t terrible, per se, but you can very much tell the waiter and the host did not want to be there. While they served us decently well, and came to check on us a couple times, i noticed them whispering and glaring at us from behind the bar. That on top of the fact they requested that we tip from the whole amount of our bill, and not the discounted price, just hampered my experience a bit. I know that I’m supposed to tip from the full amount (as any grouponer should do, ALWAYS!) the fact that he TOLD us how much to tip was a bit sleazy and not needed.
This place does seem promising for brunch tho, they seem to have a much more extensive menu, and bottomless mimosas, which are always a plus.

How is this place not busier around brunch time?! If you’re a fellow bottomless mimosa brunch lover, you’ve put up with ridiculously long waits to get seated and have accepted paying over $ 18 for bottomless mimosas. I stumbled upon Triptych because I was hungry, wanted to drink, and Opentable said this place had open reservations within the hour. I was pleasantly surprised!
First of all, their bottomless mimosa deal is amazing. You get an entrée (up to a $ 15 value) and bottomless mimosas for $ 30. If the meal you want is over $ 15, you just pay the difference. My first thought when mimosas are decently priced is «Great… but the mimosas will either a) be weak or b) use shitty champagne.» Nope! David, the owner, is an awesome guy. I watched him pour an entire bottle of good champagne into a carafe then top it off with juice… my kind of mimosas! Needless to say, brunch became a party. We drank so much that we tried all the juices, including their vegetable concoction. It was good if you want to feel healthy while drinking, otherwise I love my OJ.
You would think that maybe the drinks are good but the food sucks. Also not the case– the brunch items are great. I got the chicken apple sausage omelet and my boyfriend got the smoked black forest ham benedict. I love their hollandaise AND that they sprinkle pimenton on the eggs. Delicious. They tried to convince us to try the beignets, but I’m dating a health freak so he wasn’t down. David must’ve sensed my sweet tooth because he ended up giving us a beignet to try on the house, and it was as good as he hyped! The berry cream was a perfect ending to a savory meal.
This place has a lot of potential to become a hit brunch spot. They have an outdoor area in the back, which is great if you’re brunching with a group. My only suggestion would be to play better music, and maybe people would flock to this place as a go-​to spot for boozie brunch. Overall, I’ll definitely be coming back here :)

Timing… is… everything. The speed (or lack thereof) with which our group received our split bill, which took nearly fifteen minutes alone, really speaks. Triptych wasn’t that busy — one of us even eventually inquired why it was taking so long to receive our bill, and a sassy excuse for each card taking nearly five minutes each was given at the counter. Ahem. No.
I’ll bet you’re wondering what I ordered — probably the best item out of our four dishes: their Gnocchi and Sausage, plus an Iced Tea. It was alright, but it was overshadowed by issues from the rest of my group’s dishes. The standout for that was my friend’s Sirloin Steak dish, ordered medium rare, which was actually served up well done, like they forgot and/​or just didn’t care.
In terms of service, we were entirely dissatisfied. One star, if that.

Sunday brunch was our reason for visiting this restaurant. The menu has good breadth from which to choose. It was a table for eight so not surprisingly we dined on a range of dishes.
The ‘around the table feedback’ was quite positive. The standouts were the Croque Madame being baked foccacia, cheese, fried egg and smoked black ham. Presented nicely, tasted good and was a good serving size. The Huevos Rancheros was excellent, the black beans just right with the corn and the eggs. The Jambon omelet had good flavour too.
The coffee was reasonable.
The servers are efficient, if at times a tad distant.
The ambience of this place is appealing. It is good for groups as it has good space between tables. It is light and airy, and has a good feel. I enjoyed this place and would come again.

Meh, if you’re going to go to brunch in SF, I would not bother with this place. They have a cute outdoor patio but the service was very poor. We all changed our finds on what to order about 3 times by the time the waiter came to the table to take our drink orders.
I did really love the beignets. I got just the regular ones on the menu and it came with a berry/​strawberry cream that was delish! They were pretty big too. 4 of us split the 3 of them and it was plenty.
I ordered the eggs benedict with prosciutto and I’m sure how you can make any brunch item taste bad (it’s pretty simple ingredients) but this meal just did not impress me. Also there was some confusion from the waitress on if it was bacon or prosciutto, which you think she should know. I took the dish anyway because I didn’t want to wait for my meal any longer.
Lastly, there was MOLD in the ketchup container top! Either they’re refilling the same ketcup containers without washing them or they just don’t go through a lot of ketchup.

I’ve been to Triptych a handful of times. Not sure why I haven’t reviewed sooner, but here goes, as this place is worthy of a 5 star stellar review!
It was the only place that was open on Memorial Day and we were feeling brunchy. We hadn’t tried them for brunch before, so it was a win win! Found sweet parking right up in front, and were seated right away.
It’s a cool eclectic vibe at Triptych, and servers are always helpful and tend to refill waters and coffees right when you need them to (without asking). They have extensive Eggs Benedict options, and regular brunch and non-​brunch items that I can appreciate. So we ordered the following:
Beignets: Light, fluffy and not too oily at all. Was absolutely delish and one of the best beignets I’ve ever had (better than Brenda’s, and I’ve yet to go to Café Du Monde in New Orleans for the real comparison).
Egg Benedict — It looked amazing! The plate was clean with nothing left, so he must’ve really enjoyed it!
Champignon Omelette — mushroom, baby spinach, mozzarella cheese, avocado cream. Absolutely delish. Ample veggie to cheese ratio. Practically licked this plate clean.
I will not hesitate to hit up Triptych again for brunch, especially for their mouthwatering beignets. I may also do dinner, as one can easily make open table ressies. Make sure to check out the artwork, decorative bathroom and patio. Prices are reasonable and won’t break the bank, and service is fast and attentive.
Great food, great service, and great location. What more can you ask for? 5 stellar stars for Triptych! Hooray! Cheers!

Came here with the girls for a ladies brunch after a hot yoga class and we were pleasantly surprised to find this place not too crowded and the owner there to greet us. They have a back patio area, which we definitely enjoyed since it was a nice day.
We ordered:
Mimosas — Of course, we ordered mimosas. They were pretty standard and nothing to spectacular. They had a bottomless mimosa special for $ 30 which also includes an entrée, but none of us are big drinkers and didn’t partake.
Beignets — The bacon/​strawberry cream one was really good. I liked how the beignets were fluffy, unlike the denser versions that I’ve had in the city. It was perfect for a small piece of bacon and strawberry cream. all together was light, fluffy and the right proportions.
Tofu and Quinoa — I actually REALLY liked this one even though I only had a little bit off my friend’s plate. The curry wasn’t too overpowering and the tofu was the perfect consistency. Will definitely have to order this the next time I’m back.
Jambon Omelet — I wanted something less carb-​y, so I ordered the ham omelet. It was a good size with a great egg to filling ratio. I’m all about the proportions and they definitely nailed it. I hate it when you order an omelet and it is 90% egg. *shivers* ugh.
There wasn’t anything here that I would ABSOLUTELY have to have again, so I gave them 3 stars. Nothing spectacular, but nothing awful either. Overall, its a nice place to grab brunch on a weekday with a larger group.

Sunday brunch, 11 AM — 9 people.
We walked over from our place which is just a stone’s throw away, so it was convenience more than quality that compelled us to choose Triptych for brunch. We had heard some good things from other people, so a late morning brunch with the promise of bottomless mimosas and less than a mile to walk home seemed like a perfect way to start Day 2 of SF Pride weekend.
There were a few good things about our experience here, so I’ll get them out of the way first. The strawberry and bacon beignets were very nice — great texture, not too heavy, well cooked and a unique flavor. Only 2 for $ 5, so a little pricey (more on that later), but the combination of sweet and salty was a great addition to some nicely made beignets. Not what you’ll find in New Orleans but a good SF representation. The bottomless mimosas deal was pretty good — $ 30 flat for 1 brunch entrée and as much as you can drink (includes the peach and beet juice varieties) is pretty good when you get a group of people together and stay for 3 hours. The eggs benedicts were all cooked perfectly and well executed, and should be considering they have about 10 different menu items with ‘benedict’ in the name. Finally, the setting was a very pleasant environment to have a Sunday brunch — we were dining al fresco behind the restaurant, which was a nice alternative to sidewalk dining and being next to traffic. The greenery around us was much nicer than being cramped inside a loud and noisy room.
While these were some scattered highlights, the core aspects of a dining experience received failing grades here. We ordered drinks relatively quickly but it took about 20 minutes to get our food ordered. It didn’t take an inordinate amount of time to get our food, but we got our first pitcher of mimosas about 30 – 40 minutes after we sat down. For a place selling bottomless mimosas, I understand what you’re trying to do, and I don’t like it. Getting coffee/​cream/​water on the regular was also a challenge throughout. They had 1 server and 1 busser covering 4 tables (20 people among them) poorly. We thought the kitchen might have been stretched as well as it took ages for all the drinks to come out, to the point where we were canceling orders because they were taking forever.
Looking at the food in terms of quality and value, it was average. The crab cake benedict was cooked well, but it was a bit saltier than I would have liked and the crab cakes were a far cry from Chesapeake Bay. Worth about $ 3 less than the menu price. The omelette was again a lesson on how to cook eggs correctly, but on the small side and the filling vegetables were overcooked and soggy. The club sandwich was not a club sandwich — there were 2 pieces of bread instead of 3. The mimosas were interesting because there were different kinds to try, but they were strong, we thought they may have used wine instead of champagne, and they only had orange after the first couple carafes. Coffee was served in small 8−10oz mugs which took forever to refill, and was $ 3. If I knew I would be that disappointed with my decision, I would have gone out of my way to get Philz beforehand and then just drink water.
Overall the food was average and the service was below average. Less than half of our group walked away happy and we will most likely not return. I feel our average spend of $ 30/​head could have been better spent elsewhere, and we will not use the ‘based on proximity’ search next time. 2.5 stars.

Picked Triptych for our Mother’s Day dinner because it’s relatively close to AT&T Park (Mom was at the ballgame) and because they have a good variety of items on their menu. On a Sunday night the place was pretty empty, just us and a couple other tables. We were seated by the window so the dinginess described by other reviews didn’t bother us.
Ordered a variety of dishes. Brother had the gourmet burger and sweet potato fries. Son the gnocchi and sausage special, wife the paella supremo. sis the ossoc bucco, Mom the lamb and me the breaded pork loin.
Burger & sweet potato fries: OK, not great. 3 stars.
Gnocchi and sausage, but tasty but a little too much garlic. 3.5 stars
Paella: didn’t try it.
Osso bucco: Soft and tender, fell right off the bone. 4 stars
Lamb: 3 small shanks. A little undercooked for my taste. 3.5 stars
My pork loin: Loved it. Soft and tender, lightly breaded and perfectly cooked. 5 stars.
Deserts: had the beignets, toffee pudding and mousse. All great. 4.5 stars.
Service: server was real nice, but service was slow. Even with only 1 or 2 other tables, service was slow. Took us 2 hours to eat. Sometimes we didn’t see him (its a small restaurant) so we were wondering wtf he was doing. Granted we were enjoying Mother’s Day and each others company, but still slow. 3.5 stars.
Overall, a mixed bag but will round up because Mom and wife enjoyed their Mother’s Day dinner so I’m in a good mood ;-). 4 stars.
