History

Established in 2011.

Located in the heart of North Beach, Tupelo has quickly become the «go to» place for superb live entertainment and exceptional southern cuisine. Featuring our down home brunch and rib filling dinners, two projection screens and 3 hi-​def tvs for your sports needs, and of course, the best music in town, Tupelo has what you’re looking for. Come walk the floor where Janis Joplin and Steve Martin started their careers with a libation from our extensive beer selection or our full bar. I’ve been in the bar and restaurant business for a long time. I’m also a lifelong musician, so Tupelo is truly the realization of those two passions. We take great pride in the quality of the service, the food, the music — your experience as a whole. It is not possible to be everything for everyone, but I’d like to think we do a few things very well. I am always open to critisism or suggestions, albeit I have a fondness for manners — That’s just how Mamma raised me, so please be polite in your comments. Feel free to send me a message, positive or otherwise. I will try to be prompt in my response, and try to resolve any issues you might have. Come to Tupelo to see Shantytown and grab a bite to eat. Every band member is great and they know their stuff. The Tupelo Tots and BBQ Meatloaf were really good.

Atmosphere is awesome! My Boyf. and his family came here to check out the Lovegangsters who played very good! Had the best time listening to some live music and good drinks. The bartender is super friendly and so is the bouncer/​security. No outside drinks allowed which is understandable and the security threw my drink away just for me! Super sweet guy! Anywho, the place looks like old-​fashion and I love it!!!

I’ve got good memories at this bar for the few times I’ve been.
Drinks are reasonable and the live music is a plus. For as crowded as it can get I can’t say that I’ve ever had to wait in a long line to get into Tupelo.
Seating/​Hangout area can be a but rough to reign in, while you end up finding a place to stand or dance more occasionally.
Atmosphere is friendly.

It’s kinda our company’s work tradition to hit up a karaōke bar after dinner. As for myself, I am NOT a karaōke girl. However there are a TON of talented singers on our team, so it’s actually very entertaining (and not torture) when I’m with the work crew/​friends. On this most recent trip, we discovered Tupelo and became instant fans.
Tuesday night is a karaōke circus. A big screen, a guy playing a keyboard and saxophone, laser lights, props … it all adds to the performance and things get a bit cray up in there.
Bartenders were attentive and fast with drinks. They also have a food menu — I didn’t order anything but some fella next to me was noshing on a mighty fine looking burger.

A few times a year I get to escape my San Diego «work island» in order to see some of my coworkers from around the globe. We talk shop, we spend time at HQ, we go to dinner, we have drinks, but our favorite bonding pastime would have to be: karaōke.
For the past couple of years we searched for and found a few karaōke bars but we’ve had to be the ones to create the fun as the karaōke setup always seems to be, uh, kinda s#itty. Nope, not anymore, friends. We’ve now found Tupelo… more importantly, DJ Purple.
As soon as we walked through the door on Tuesday night the vibe was infectious. Anyone who knows some good old fashioned karaōke can instantly tell that the quality of the equipment is top notch and the person running it definitely cares. The sound is good, smoke machines go off at exactly the right time, the songs are constantly adjusted for volume and pitch (so you would have to be REALLY bad to actually sound bad), and our favorite part of all, live saxophone! Seriously, grab a drink, pick a song and enjoy the show. It’s fun, fun, fun, and all of us walked away from the experience rambling about how great Tupelo was for karaōke.
Will be back? Hell yeah! Be ready for us, DJ Purple because we can’t wait to see you again!

Tupelo has everything I never knew I wanted in karaōke and now I don’t know if I can go back.
Inflatable guitars for shredding on during solos? Never desired them before but now it seems so obvious that they’re necessary.
Smoke that shoots out behind you during particularly rawkus numbers? I neeeeeeed those dramatic moments!
The amazing DJ Purple, a dude who plays sax along to your song when appropriate (and let’s face it, it’s always appropriate)?

And not just a sax, you guys. There are wigs and sweet shades involved as well. A short clip of him playing along to Careless Whisper might be my most liked video on Instagram, and with good reason. It’s genius.
The song list is smaller than most spots but it’s well curated and carries a lot that you don’t normally see, particularly in dance categories. First time I’ve ever had the chance to sing along to Robyn outside of my car! And if I wanted to do Pulp’s Common People? Then by jove I could get my Jarvis on, no problem. I seriously love it so so much.
The crowd is fun (even the folks I didn’t know were great) and the bartenders are as well. Staff regularly got up to sing and
I didn’t go outside of my usual gin and tonic for beverages but they were good and strong (deceptively strong, I was pretty ouchie the next morning as I pulled myself together to get to the airport). Get ready for us in August, Tupelo! I’ll be rolling up with my crew again and ready to slow jam with DJ Purple and his sweet sweet sax.

Often great music; they lose a star for perpetuating the awful phenomenon that is karaōke. Decent food. Extremely self-​satisfied bartenders. As for the clientele, it is all bridge and tunnel, all the time.

I was exploring the North Beach area with my friends one afternoon as we were going to attend an art crawl in the area at night. We hadn’t eaten yet and also wanted some drinks so we walked up and down Grant to check out what there was to offer. After window shopping for a yummy restaurant, we ended up going back to Tupelo as it seemed the most interesting.
There were already a few groups in there drinking at 3PM on the Saturday we went (some people already really drunk). We sat down at a table and a friendly waitress came over to help us. I ordered a beer (the options were kinda limited) and a pulled pork sandwich. My friends ordered their drinks and got a burger and a po’boy.
The pulled pork was pretty good — nothing impressive. But that’s where the waffle fries come in. Yummmmm, highlight of my meal.
Nice place for a quick drink and meal. The band for the night was just getting set up, but we didn’t stick around for the live music. :(Quite a roomy place though and I can imagine it getting packed on a busy night.

Tupelo is a busy place. Good music and drinks. However don’t order the ½ fried chicken.
It was overfried and very small pieces over a mashed potato with something tangy like slaw in the mash. I returned it. They did not think it was burnt and still charged me half… My friends ordered the Chicken and waffles [this Chicken was perfect] definitely worth ordering. The Mac and cheese was great too.

Had a few friends in town that wanted to go out on a Sunday night… not too many good spots open on Sundays but we heard about Tupelo and decided to give it a try — recommended by a few people. We had a great time between the live music, the fun atmosphere and the people here. It was an interesting mix of people, varying from early 20s to upper 50s but there was lots of dancing and a good time was had by all. The drinks were a little weak and they didn’t have tonic for my gin and tonic which was a bummer but still a super fun place and I will for sure go again.

The perfect bar to come to when you’re feeling down and you just need like five drinks to feel better– I don’t have a problem I swear.

I can always count on something going on at Tupelo when I’m out bar hopping or showing out-​of-​town friends around. I absolutely love it when there’s live music here. I’ve visited during the week when there’s been a solid crowd when other bars are empty and slow. I’ve also visited on weekends when it’s very popping. A group of us Elite Unilocalers visited after an event on a random weekday (Tuesday or Wednesday I believe) and had a blast singing and listening to karaōke. Tupelo is truly a dependable nightlife stop in North Beach!
I recently misplaced my backpack containing shoes and a Christmas gift I purchased earlier during a night out on the town. The incredible staff kept it safe in a cabinet for me. In fact, they have a very large lost and found area. (That means something to me– they sincerely care about their patrons and their belongings) The following day the daytime staff promptly gave the backpack back to me and I thoroughly thanked them. The bartender simply said «If I lost my backpack with high heels and a Christmas gift, I would certainly want someone to make sure it returned to me» –bottom line: this bar is staffed with good folks!

Tuesday nights rock at this joint… thanks to DJ Purple!
It’s rare to see a karaōke DJ bust out instruments and start playing (very well) with a karaōke singer. With his musical talents, adding his touch to make performances better… this one-​man band makes Dance Karaōke Night thrive at Tupelo. Love how the crowd gets into it here and how fast songs come around. I guess that’s what you get with the Dance Karaōke vibe. I’m sure I’ll be back for more of the fun. My eyes are on their food menu too.

My kind of place as it is dance karaōke so the songs are more upbeat!
Both times been here were on a weeknight; a Unilocaler brought us here after a YEE so I brought other Unilocalers again. Half full on weeknights is a good thing if you don’t want crowds. However, it was still pretty popping fun! And, the wait for drinks or to get your karaōke song in is pretty quick. I can imagine this place being packed on the weekend considering its location.
Inside the place looks like a larger and brighter dive bar except with a stage for singing and a live karaōke DJ. The DJ sings along if needed, and even plays a music instrument if it is in the song! How fun is that?!
There are a bunch of song folders but the list is not extensive — nor overwhelming — with popular songs and somewhat up to date. There is a large projection screen and TVs all around to help you with the words. You choose a song, write it down and deposit into a small bin container by the DJ set. Then, you wait until the DJ announces it’s your turn to sing. There is no payment required but donations are accepted.
Note I’ve noticed a higher number of rap and hip-​hop songs performed here but the singers are definitely not urban (have you ever seen a middle-​aged/​retiree rapping before?) which makes it fun for everybody.
