tyson is an acclaimed music composer, experimental instrument builder, and multi-​instrumentalist who writes for horns, winds, strings, vocals, percussion, and rhythm sections for jazz, classical, and world-​music ensembles. Through composing/​arranging in settings as small as solo instruments and rock groups, to his own full-​length symphony for 18 musicians, tyson is adept at teaching to each students’ particular needs. He has a degree in music composition, painting, and writing from Whitman College with a focus on Jazz, Classical, and 20th century theory and techniques and taught there as well.

Recent projects include www​.sound​cave​.org, www​.tan​go​lamelo​dia​.com, and www. chrysalis​-foun​da​tion​.org. He has performed main stage at Harmony Festival, Anon Salon’s Sea of Dreams, the deYoung Museum, MCCLA, SomArts, and many others.

Tyson Ayers is a masterful teacher. He has the ability to listen and understand where I am in my learning curve and adjust his lessons to my skill level. When I wanted theory, he went there. When I wanted to learn blues riffs he patiently showed me a few scales and within 20 minutes I was playing lead with comprehension.
I can’t recommend Tyson enough!

My 10 year-​old son and I have both had Tyson as a music teacher for the past 7 months. He teaches at a level appropriate for each of us, and he makes us laugh. We really like him.
My son came to Tyson as a complete beginner ukulele player. Tyson has taught him many things already, including playing simple, classic melodies like «Sunshine of your Love» and «Smoke on the Water», improvising melodies with a pentatonic scale, reading chord charts, understanding rhythms and rhythm notation, understanding the relationships between notes, and reading standard musical notation. More importantly to me, my son looks forward to our lesson, and is enjoying music. He is building a foundation for a life-​long love of music.
While I didn’t major in music, I took many music classes in college and beyond. I studied classical guitar, jazz performance, Indian classical music, the Beatles, 3 semesters of music theory, etc. I am a dabbler, and I love it. Tyson is clearly a master of many musical topics. I started off on ukulele, too, learned the CAGED system of chord organization, got some tips on blues and country licks, explored a number of ideas on composition, began receiving advanced beginner piano instruction, learned about voice leading, and learned about bass line construction. Wow! I love it.
My 13 year-​old daughter’s first lesson with Tyson is tomorrow!
I recommend him to everyone and anyone interested in having fun while learning music.

I only started playing guitar in earnest about four years ago, and my first teacher (not Tyson) was a super nice guy, but the lessons were disorganized, and I only made slow progress. Then I was referred to Tyson by a dear friend, who raved about his gifts.
She was right! Tyson Ayers is a lovely, gentle, and talented man who has the gift of distilling seemingly complex musical ideas into straightforward and accessible lessons. He is a performer in his own right, an artist, and a composer in many realms. He seems to have the ability to play and teach any instrument, though strings and piano and harmonica are his strengths.
In the time since I have worked with Tyson, he has helped me to learn to improvise in solos in a jam environment, arrange songs to play with others, pick up new stringed instruments with minimal adjustment (I now play guitar, mandolin, bass, harmonica, percussion, and sing as well); and helped me to be comfortable in mixed musical settings. He has helped me to learn to play music rather than an instrument, and it is a beautiful gift. WIth his encouragement, I wrote the words and music for my first song.
Tyson helped me to overcome the inner critic that had always held back my music: that voice that told me I wasn’t up to the task. By identifying and encouraging the musical ability in me, Tyson helped open me up to new vistas of self-​expression. Best of all, he also teaches kids, and so my 11 year old daughter is a student as well. Now we play music together, riffing and laughing and singing. I am very grateful for that. If you want to learn music on a deep and intuitive level, you really need to talk to Tyson!

I almost never write Unilocal reviews, but I feel strongly enough about recommending Tyson to get the word out here. I know 5 other people who take music lessons from Tyson, and I am confident to say we all recommend him most enthusiastically. I agree with the other reviewers that Tyson is masterful at tailoring his instruction to your musical level and interests. He listens to where you are and tries to keep your personal musical goals in mind in structuring lessons. He has an amazing relationship with music and works to have students build our own unique relationships as well. I’m a beginner guitarist but he teaches violin, mandolin, guitar, bass, and ukelele to other very experienced musicians. He also teaches kids! I’m looking forward to having my son take piano from him in the future.

Tyson has a way of teaching music for the intuition. Whereas many instructors will make you learn their way by rote, and give you stacks and stacks of scales and read sheet music, Tyson shows you why things sound the way they do, and how the patterns fit.
I sought his teaching because I wanted to be better able to improvise with others on multiple instruments, and what he taught me, I took home and practiced until I came back with my own perception of relative modes. I became able to know the fingerchart for any given diatonic scale on my cello or setar or modal guitar in a few seconds, able to play my native flutes on key with many scales, and pick out the parts to play thoughtfully. In time I have come back to my standard-​tuned guitars with a whole new sound, and it started with sitting at a piano with this guy.
Tyson doesn’t just teach you. He hands you the keys to learning more rapidly. That’s the best kind of teacher you can find.

Tyson Eyers is my guitar instructor. He lives at the Million Fishes Arts Collective in the Mission. He is a classically trained guitarist and composer, and a painter and visual artist. His teaching style is moldable to wherever a student is at musically. He has been teaching me the ‘Caged’ theory for guitar, which is an amazing way to open the guitar up to soloing with the main chordal shapes C-​A-​G-​E-​D. Tyson has destroyed several music myths for me, and put me on track to become a much, much better guitarist, and one who enjoys it, too. Because it’s so easy for me to get caught in a routine, or in some technique that works really well, when I need to free up myself to explore new ways of expressing myself. Tyson is a very gifted teacher. If you need a guitar lesson, contact him. His price is very reasonable: $ 40/​hr. I highly recommend him! Plus he’s just a great guy.
