Great staff, great service, and I’ve been getting compliments for my haircut all day. You really can’t get any better than that! :)

I was heavily disrespected and called a bitch while holding my 2 yr old. I went in to politely ask for a haircut for the 2yr old, was looked up and down like we couldn’t afford a cut. Then told very rudely the cut 55 $. I don’t care about the cost but the disrespect was unbelievable. Not kid friendly at all. Lazy fat man sitting on his ass.

I got a great hair cut at Union Gents, but the price was $ 55 for a standard mens hair cut. As a guy who needs to get his hair cut at least one a month, $ 55 is just way too much. I know it’s Union Street and all, and I’m sure their rent is ridiculous, but $ 55 for a 20 minute mens hair cut? Just way to much for me to go back, even though it’s a great shop.

10 days ago Ron Cut my hair. Or rather he impersonated a sheep sheerer and cut it to the nub. I had to stop him from cutting or I would have polished my head instead of combed my hair. I brought two photos of prior haircuts with me. Ron assured me that he could duplicate or at least come close. The old saying that: the only difference between a bad hair cut and a good on is 3 days does not apply. My hair stands straight up on one side and has never looked worse. I will never go back and would not recommend Ron to anyone not seeking sheering. All this for $ 50. The Barber College would have done better.

Rob at Union Gents is great! I’m fairly new to the city so have been on the hunt for my go to barber, I can safely say the search has come to a close. He fit me in within one day and nailed the cut.
Highly recommend.

I was referred to Robb by a haircut guy who retired from his place in the Financial District. So the trek out to Union Street was more than I wanted to do on a weekday. Then I found out Robb closed up shop! Then I heard he was back in town at a new place. By the way confirm the address as I think this one is incorrect. So I finally made some time on a Tuesday. I was offered an esspresso, he made me a double. It was so good! As Robb asked me a few questions, I finally said hey just cut my hair so I end up with a good style, easy to maintain. He washed, cut, then rinsed. Then came the style, I probably could not make it look so good myself again. It has been a few days, and I like it! He took into account my «cow licks», head size and desire for minimal styling time in the morning. Woth every penny! Make an appointment, and confirm the address. Certainly cheaper cuts can be found elsewhere, however not with Robb’s quality!

Great haircut, Robb was a super nice guy and he managed to fit me in before another client that had an appointment. I was nervous about having someone else cut my hair since I’ve been doing it by myself for about 8 years but he saw exactly what I needed. I was vacationing in SF for the week and needed to get rid of some of my shaggy mop so I walked in off the street after reading some other Unilocal reviews. $ 45 isn’t cheap but I suppose you have to pay for quality (and anything other than free seems like a lot when you haven’t paid for a cut in years). Classy little hair cutting joint and the tequila and espresso are a nice touch.

Karen is amazing – she’s the only hair stylist I’ve ever had who really knows how to cut curls. I’ve been going to her for a year now, and I won’t go to anyone else anymore. Found her through
, where everyone raved about how well she cuts curls. All the praise is well-​deserved, and I highly recommend her.
The first time I went, she listened patiently to my traumatic hair history (more bad cuts and off colors than I care to remember). Then, she snipped my curls in a way that brought out their natural pattern, giving me tips on hair care as she went along.
Reasonable prices are an added bonus. She does her own scheduling, so call her directly at 415−244−7363.
The fact that she cuts at Union Gents is an added bonus. Love the old school barber shop feel and easy location. She also cuts in Marin, but I’ve never been out there to see her.

I love Karen — have been going to her for years, and she’s the only person to give me the perfect shade of auburn. The guys in this shop are incredible — so lovely and effusive with compliments and kind words! You feel like a million bucks walking out of here!

I agree with the other reviewers — Karen Neustadt is the goddess of curly hair cutters. I discovered her through her many rave reviews on
and now my only regret is that I didn’t go to see her sooner. The style she created for my curly and wavy combination hair is both sophisticated and easy to care for. And the color and highlights she did are the best I’ve ever gotten. I cannot imagine trusting anybody else with my hair now. I recommend Karen most highly.

On my second cut with Robb and very happy with the results, overall experience, and price. I was going to fancy salon’s and spending almost $ 100 with tip… I’m actually embarrassed looking back for wasting that much cash. Anyhow, I pay $ 45 now and get a great cut and Robb’s a really nice guy. If you’re a guy looking for a quality cut, but don’t want to chance the low end barber and are tired of having to tip the girl shampoo girl, then check out Union Gent.

I have been going to Patrick for over 15 years and could not be more satisfied. I would recommend Union Gent to anyone looking for a great hair cut at a fair price! All of the staff are true professionals and the salon is clean and comfortable.

I must admit, I probably a little harder on hair cutting establishments than most people. I have fairly high expectations for places that are going to charge you close to $ 50 for a men’s haircut.
Having said that, I have enjoyed both of my haircuts at Union Gent’s. I have switched from getting my hair cut in the financial district to going to a place closer to my apartment. If you are looking for a place in the financial district, I would still recommend Spargo, but if you are looking for a place in the Marina/​Cow Hollow/​Upper Pac Heights/​Russian Hill, I would gladly recommend this place.
The space is clean and in a great location on Union Street. If you go on a Saturday morning/​early afternoon, its great to be able to just swing into one of the Union Street eateries for a late breakfast or early lunch. The barbers seem to be all good. I have gone to two different ones since I frequently care more about getting the time I want than the specific stylist. They have been on time both times I have gone in and have been friendly as well.
This place is definitely worth a shot if you have tried the Supercuts route and like me have found it lacking. Good guys and good hair cuts at this place.

Robb rules. I just moved into the City and needed my haircut. Robb fit me in the same day I called and produced a very smart haircut. He listened to my lame stories and laughed at my even lamer jokes =).
In all seriousness, Robb is a professional stylist with style. He is a gentleman and very adept with scissors. I highly recommend him to anyone that cares about their hair.

I have naturally curly hair, and Karen is the goddess of the shears. She created a style that brings out my hair’s most sophisticated and luxurious nature. Frank has been my father’s barber for decades. I usually get a haircut from Frank when I need to look my best (i.e. proms, weddings, etc.) Parking is always tough. They’re always busy, so I recommend calling-​in an appointment.

Great vibe and while Robb gives a top-​notch scissor cut, I would be comfortable with any of the guys on staff which speaks volumes about their quality.
Don’t clown around with the cattle call places. Go to the pros.

A great place to get a cut… Been seeing Ziva (Hi Ziva!!) since 1991… Probably the longest «relationship» I’ve ever had… never had a bad or even marginal cut… always perfect… Frank, Chuck and Pat are very friendly and always have great music playing… I miss the old location facing Union Street but no big…

I think the difference between a great barber and a merely good one relies on communication.
Today, my barber asked me what I wanted. I leaned over, and whispered, «Frank, I want to look like Steve McQueen.»
Frank became suddenly serious. «Steve McQueen did what they called in those days a ‘Peter Gunn.’ You know what a Peter Gunn is?» I replied I thought it was a Quincy Jones tune. He spent a few minutes explaining the history of the cut, and then gave it to me. It was like dealing with a hair historian. Talk about your consultative relationships. Frank is a great barber.
Then we spent the rest of the time talking about Steve McQueen movies, the great chase scene in «Bullitt,» and muscle cars.
I’ve never had this kind of communication with a barber before.
The store is in a great (but out-​of-​the-​way) location. It’s bright and cheerful; it feels modern but still gives off a manly barber shop feel. Sports on the flat panel TV are a bonus.
And I’m pretty sure I’m putting out a better Steve McQueen vibe. Thanks, Frank.
