University of San Francisco is a premier Jesuit Catholic, urban University with a global perspective that educates leaders who will fashion a more humane and just world.
The university offers undergraduate, graduate and professional students the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as persons and professionals, and the values and sensitivity necessary to be men and women for others.
History
Established in 1855.
Our founder, Father Anthony Maraschi, S.J., arrived in San Francisco as an Italian immigrant in 1854. The next year, he borrowed $ 11,500 to build a Jesuit church and school on a few sand dunes on the south side of Market Street (between Fourth and Fifth Streets), and proclaimed, «Here, in time, will be the heart of a great city.»
* USF was the first institution in the United States to stage a public demonstration of the electric light. Physics Professor Joseph Neri, S.J., gave that demonstration in 1874 to an amazed crowd of San Franciscans.
* USF has hosted 12 Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in the last decade, including Bishop Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama, and Shirin Ebadi.
* USF currently enrolls more than 8,700 undergraduate and graduate students representing all faiths.
* USF has more than 88,000 alumni living in all 50 states, seven United States territories, and 112 countries.
* USF is listed as a Tier One National University in the 2010 U.S. News & World Report.
