turns out, searching for an engagement ring when you have only a loose grip on what will thrill your to-​be is challenging. i visited a lot of stores and, frankly, found a majority of the diamond minded to be a touch snooty. but harold and allison smiled. and were nice. you know, like people should be. once i found them, the rest was easy. from walking into the store to walking out with a beautiful diamond ring took two hours. bonus points for being able to roam REI while they were setting the ring. thank you both so much! she loves it!

I first came to the ValuExchange after coming here to check out another wholesaler here (who turned out to have more expensive prices then retail). I wasn’t even looking for earrings when I came across some beautiful tourmaline and sapphire cabochon 14k earrings that were for sale here. I tried them on and they looked great then I found out the price and they looked even better. I was very happy with the customer service I got and came home with a brand new pair of gemstone earrings in a beautiful box in a shiny red bag. I will definitely come back.

Harold is one of the most genuinely kind people i have ever met. He obviously loves what he does and doesn’t try to push you over budget. He has some of the most beautiful ring selections i have ever seen, its like jewelry heaven in his store! I went with a friend to his store and he let me try on all the rings i wanted. i recently purchase diamonds from value exchange and am very impressed with Harold and Allison’s professional and personal approach. A lot of times you feel like sleaze city when it comes to diamond sellers, not here, reasonable, pleasant, no used car dealer feeling. My NOW FIANCE was told to visit the SF diamond Mart. He asked me to join him and although I dragged my feet, wanting to purchase locally, I went. First stop was Diamond Importers. We were early, and Allison and Herald were beyond friendly and accommodating. We went on to visit 8 other dealers but couldn’t get Allison and Herald and their diamonds out of our head. Not only did their sincere service sell us, but the diamond selection was far superior to what we had seen throughout the mart and locally. They worked with us and I found the stone and band both I and my fiancé wanted. They created an engagement ring for us and I couldn’t be happier with the ring my fiancé proposed to me with !!! Simply said, Harold and Allison are truly a cut above all others in the San Francisco jewelry business.
First of all, I made an appointment via telephone to have an appraisal done on a diamond ring that has been in my family for over 60 years. Harold welcomed me into his office and spent considerable time making me comfortable while he examined the stone and educated me on the color and clarity of the diamond.
Secondly, they photographed the ring and as promised sent a very professional, written insurance appraisal by mail within 4 days — all for about $ 50.
When we’re in the market for another diamond or other jewelry, my first stop will be ValuExchange. Thank you to you both for exceptional service and kindness!

My husband purchased my engagement ring and both of our wedding bands here. We shopped at many places and Harold has the best price, quality, and most importantly, the BEST SERVICE!
We went to Harold last September and our wedding was in 8 weeks! I have to admit that I’m very picky at everything and especially when it comes to jewelry. I envision how my engagement ring would look like ever since I was a little girl. We went to Harold with no pictures or drawings but with just what I told him verbally, he was able to hand made my engagement ring EXACTLY the way I wanted (Photo # 9 and #30).
For our wedding bands, I wanted my wedding band to be 3 mm in width because I have very petite fingers, and my husband wanted his to be 8 mm due to his huge hands. However women wedding bands usually come in 4 mm and men comes in 6 mm but guess what? Harold hand made both our wedding bands just so we get what we wanted! (Photo # 29 and # 31)
We only gave him a 3 – 4 week time frame and sure enough Harold was able to deliver as he promised. We were able to get our rings before our engagement pictures and of course for our big day! It’s been almost a year since me and my husband got married but we still keep in touch with Harold because if my husband were to buy me any jewelry, Harold would be the one we will go back to.

Just wanted to update that the service at this place is truly unbeatable. About a month has gone by since we bought my beautiful rings and in the mail we received a wonderful card from Allison. It was a sweet hand written note wishing us well and thanking us for our business and Unilocal review and letting us know that they are happy to clean the rings anytime and to come by anytime.
This level of customerservice is something that is truly wonderful and it just doesn’t happen much now-​a-​days… which is unfortunate.

For anyone looking for advice, to buy, or just looking, I recommend this place! There are so many local options but they really are great!

NO Pressure diamond shopping! I had a great experience here.
I felt really comfortable asking questions about all the various diamond cuts and they were really good about explaining everything.
What really set them apart was their prices. I shopped around at Union St, Union Square, and a few other smaller boutique places around Market St and along Fillmore St. I felt Diamond Importers had high quality products that were much cheaper than any other place I went to. And they were able to recreate a design that I liked for a great price.

Top recommendation for anyone seeking knowledge, value and service. Buy from them and you have a relationship for life and will never second guess yourself!

I walked into ValuExchange after returning some things at REI. I needed to have a piece of jewelry appraised and happened upon Harold’s store. After clearly explaining that I was only interested in an independent appraisal and wasn’t going to buy anything, I still received the royal treatment. I got coffee, chocolate and patient conversation explaining my options all in the interest of great customer service. Although I haven’t purchased any diamonds from Harold yet, I certainly plan to.

Shopping for an engagement ring was a stressful activity for a guy who’s not that into bling marrying a girl who’s also not that into bling.
I’m so glad I ended up here. Harold listens. He doesn’t try to up sell you or make what they have work for you. He tries to fulfill your needs and your values. I actually bought my ring at a vintage store, but we bought both our bands at the ValuExchange. He was a gentleman to me and my wife. We asked for a very unusual engraving and he found a way to get it done which was remarkable and didn’t bankrupt in doing so. I can’t say how much I enjoyed each time I walked into his store and how much I learned about the industry from Harold and how fair I believe he was to me. I may not buy a lot of bling, but when I do I’ll buy from Harold.

I purchased my wife’s engagement ring, wedding band and my wedding ring here. I went to many different diamond stores and these guys were the best on price, quality, selection and knowledge!
The diamond for the engagement ring was a great value (it appraised for far more than I paid) and Harold was very knowledgable and friendly with all our questions. He found me exactly what I wanted and didn’t try and up-​sell me.
My wife lost one of the small diamonds on her wedding band and also wanted to make a change to her engagement band. Harold took care of both of these without charging us a cent!

After two years of being dormant, I activated my Unilocal account just so I could review Diamond Importers. Sorry for the looong review, but we’re talking diamonds here, not hamburgers or something.
My fiancé proposed in Panama a couple of months ago, and bought my engagement ring at Diamond Importers. I could not be happier.
So there are the four «C’s» to consider when buying a diamond (cut, color, clarity, carat). To be cheesy (but I love this place so much that I will go to that cheesy place), there should also be an «I» for integrity for such an important purchase, and this place has it. (Also, the store carries a variety of jewelry — necklaces, wedding bands, etc. and I think they can probably create anything.)
The owner, Harold, and his assistant, Adlai, are simply two of the nicest, most honest, caring gentlemen I’ve ever met. My fiancé explained to me that he went to many jewelry stores before (thankfully) finding Diamond Importers. He had less than desirable experiences at other jewelers, and at some felt like he was in a used car lot. He knew what my «dream» ring setting was and at other places, experienced the following salesmen: «That setting? I could do that by the end of the day.» Then, «Did that guy say he could do it today? Give me an hour.» It’s probably important to note that I have never before even SEEN my «dream» setting in real life, so it’s kind of funny that these other places tried to convince him that it could be done in minutes.
Then he found Diamond Importers. Harold took the time to explain to him that the most important thing to do is first pick out the diamond. He went over all the considerations he should take into account when picking a diamond (to the extent that my fiancé is now a diamond expert of sorts). Once that was done, they went onto the setting. Harold explained that to do the setting right, it would take at least two weeks and that he would not rush it because quality comes first. My fiancé really wanted to propose while we were on vacation, so Harold set the diamond in a plain band for the proposal, and told him to send me in when we got back.
So fast-​forward, we’re back from vacation and I’m in the store meeting Harold and Adlai for the first time. My fiancé had talked them up quite a bit, so my expectations were quite high — and they exceeded them. Harold was incredibly patient as I tried on ring after ring, design after design, and explained to me things like the importance of the height of the diamond of the setting, the difference in designs, etc. There was no pressure. I chose features from a number of different settings (instead of being easy and just choosing one setting) and I asked if it could be done in less than two weeks as I was going out of town. They said that they would get started on it that day and try their best.
One week and five days later, I’m back at the store. When Adlai opened up the box with my ring, I literally backed away — it was SO beautiful, I couldn’t believe it was going to go on my finger. I still can’t believe it’s on my finger now. I may be biased, but from the most objective point possible, the setting is simply unmatched. It is breathtakingly beautiful, original, feminine, delicate yet dazzling. The diamond sparkles. (And I don’t know the price, but I know my fiancé and I know this was a good deal.)
I have literally been stopped by strangers on the street, at restaurants, stores, etc. who have complimented me on my ring. I am tempted to post a picture of it here so you can see what I’m talking about, but it’s so original and one of a kind, I don’t think I can bear to. (I know, selfish, selfish, but just trust me. It’s beautiful.)
I love this place so much that it warms my heart and I smile just thinking about what exceptional service I received there and how happy they made my fiancé and me.
To all of you future husbands, please, please, please go to Diamond Importers. Seriously. You will NOT regret it, and your soon-​to-​be fiancée will thank you for it.
