Volunteers in Asia was founded in the early 1960s by a Stanford University dean to assist Chinese refugees in Hong Kong. Forty years later the organizations scope has expanded considerably, but has maintained its focus on serving those in need. VIAs mission is twofold: They send Stanford students to less-developed Asian countries to teach and volunteer, and facilitate exchange programs through which students from Asian countries spend several months learning and studying at Stanford. Each year, dozens of young people travel to places like China, Vietnam, and Indonesia to teach English and improve the lives of locals, thanks to VIA. This is a great organization that deserves our support.
