Well, I could get a coveted ‘first review’ badge and start a new listing for Autoweek since I’m reviewing the tangible often found in the loo version and not the www dot com iteration, but I know that its really the same thing and I’m happy to follow in the illustrious IQ’s footsteps.
I too am not someone people would suspect knows anything about cars. They look at me and they assume I only read Highlights, Mad and The Examiner. I resent they even think that — I mean, the Examiner, come on!
Anywho, I am a big time car dweeb. I’ve doted on their curves and geeked out over the technology and mods irrationally for years, and car publications have fueled the obsession. Having pawed my way through the slick pages of the mundane rags such as Car and Driver, to the sublime ilk of Evo and Car I settled on Autoweek to subscribe to; it seemed to have decent writing and would, I thought, keep me sated by constantly feeding me weekly auto news pablum vs. suffering the chasms between monthly mags. It did not work out that way though, the issues arrived in batches — I’d get one pretty late, then gap, then a coupla/​few weeks later one tardy issue plus a really dated one at once, and so on.
The Autoweeks were shipped naked, no bag or anything protecting it, and one theory was that postal workers may have hung onto issues to peruse at their leisure, but who knows, whatever the cause this was not the weekly cutting edge auto news fix it was supposed to be and I found that are many free and current options online. So, it just did not seem worth it and we let the subscription lapse.
I do not subscribe to any magazine now, the auto addiction is fed almost entirely off the internet with a stream of random info and speculation from sites like Left Lane News, Top Gear snippets, and deranged enthusiast forums, and yes even
sometimes (which is okay but lacks the fun of thumbing through the outrageous exotic car classifieds in the glossy version). Overall I haven’t missed it much, well, except when in the loo… I may just have to get that Evo subscription after all.
