Alex Goh’s Dragon Whiskers Candy

I travel around the world and I’ve seen a lot of those Dragon Whiskers candy in Asia. I have never ONCE tried it before. I went to the Monrovia street fair and I met Alex. He gave us some free sample and it was beyond words. He is a master mind! I love this candy thanks to him. I am going back every Friday now, just so I can get more. However, a box of 6 is $ 5, I would kind of say its pricey BUT its worth what you eat!

You can find Alex Goh’s Dragon Whiskers Candy at the Hawaii Supermarket on Valley and Del Mar in San Gabriel. Each time we’ve bought it, we’ve wolfed it down immediately. It’s a wonderfully light dessert with a slightly sweet and sticky filling.
Mr. Goh himself can be found at various Southern California festivals and fairs creating his works of candy art. He puts on a mesmerizing show as he takes a single strand of honey and corn starch and somehow twists and weaves it into thousands of thin strings before adding the filling inside of it. He’s a funny and likable guy, too, stopping every now and then to make sure you snap good photos.

My dad knows Alex Goh personally so we support him when he sells this candy locally. The most recent was at a small street fair in Arcadia today! I believe he may be there next Saturday as well if I’m not wrong.
Dragon Whisker Candy (also known as Dragon Beard Candy) is a traditional Chinese candy for emperors. The outside is very thin strings of honey, stretched with corn starch. It’s hard to explain, but it’s sometimes described as the Chinese cotton candy due to the melt in your mouth consistency. By itself, the wisps are not incredibly sweet, which is great because it complements the sweet filling.
The filling can have different flavors to it, but they are all soft and crumbly. It’s best when made fresh or relative fresh!

This guy doesnt make it fresh anymore. I was looking around for him. Lady at hawaii supermarket pointed me to aisle 8. She said he just delivers the candy. They were hard as hell. probably sat on the shelf too long.

I love to just watch them make this candy its very interesting to see. The candy is really good, and a good gift to give to friends also. You should definitely buy more than 1 box because you will finish them really fast. really good place to go to! I do recommend it.

My father first introduced me to Dragon’s Beard candy when I was a little girl. After that I never saw them again. I only remembered its name. Many years later, a friend of mine gave them to me as a gift, and they taste so good! I was afraid that I might never eat Dragon’s Beard or Dragon’s Whiskers candy ever again because I had no idea where to get them. It’s a specialty candy that you can’t find in stores. You have to buy them from a specialty Chinese confectionery. This type of candy could only be enjoyed by emperors and aristocrats back in the Han dynasty. The process of making this candy almost became a lot art during the Cultural Revolution. So if you’re curious about trying this candy, just try it and know that it’s a part of Chinese history and culture!
When I ate the Dragon Whiskers Candy from here, I became hopelessly addicted. I share them with my husband as well as my in-​laws. They weren’t even Chinese and they also loved them. Think of the candy as cotton candy except that it melts in your mouth and is not gritty like American cotton candy. Imagine it with chopped peanuts and sweet honey inside. You can see why this candy became an instant hit with Chinese emperors, to the point that they wouldn’t even let commoners eat it.
I’m so happy to find a place where I can get sweet Dragon’s Whiskers candy whenever I want, and they do a really great job. It’s like I’m reliving my childhood again!

I’ve been searching for «dragon’s beard» candy to no avail… until this place! Unfortunately, Alex was not working as it was a holiday, but he informed us over the phone that we could buy some at the Hawaii Supermarket (aisle 8).
The only flavor available was the peanut/​sesame and they probably taste different from when eaten fresh but still yummy. They’re a tad expensive, $ 5 a box (it’s probably worth it when you can watch the man do his thing and eat it right after), but how often do you get to eat homemade candy?
One word of advice, avoid dropping an open box of dragon whiskers candy indoors, unless you want a powdery explosive mess.

A dessert nut friend of mine found this Unilocal review looking for the Dragon Whiskers Candy. It was a Saturday afternoon around 5pm or so… and Alex Goh is nowhere to be found. We walked around, inside, and outside of the Hawaii Supermarket. Boo!
We were able to find the already made Dragon Whiskers Candy in aisle 8 of the Hawaii Supermarket. I tried the Peanut Butter flavor — it was okay. I think this is one of those things that needs to be eaten fresh; right after the experience of watching how it is made. Getting the Dragon Whiskers Candy in a box seemed to defeat the purpose.
Unilocalers have to do a better job tracking down this elusive Alex Goh (and update the business hours)!

I found Alex Goh! Actually, I have no idea what he looks like. I don’t know if it was Alex at the cart. But, someone was selling Dragon Whisker Candy with his packaging at the HK2 Food District in Rowland Heights, as he is there every weekend.
My daughter and I were at his cart, when I asked her if she wanted to try a dragon whisker candy, as I was ready to buy some for her if she she said yes. Instead, the man (Mr. Goh?) eavesdrops and gives my daughter a sample. The sample does its job, and my daughter is hooked. Customer service cannot get any better than this.
The dragon whisker candy comes in 5 different flavors, mocha, strawberry, peanut, coconut, and sesame. The only flavors available today were the peanut and sesame. I bought a box of peanut dragon whisker candies for $ 5.
Good stuff! But, is the man really Mr. Goh?

I haven’t been able to see him make this in person, but I found it in aisle 8 inside Hawaii Supermarket. (I was pretty frustrated, having thought that I missed him twice.) It’s $ 5/​box, and there are several flavors.
The candy itself is sticky and sweet and amazing. So. Good.

Found him at the Asian Expo today. I’ve been looking for this treat for ages. It’s a very labor intensive candy and I hard to find!

What Alex Goh does while making his Dragon Whiskers Candy is performance art. I became obsessed with Dragon Whiskers Candy, also called Kings Candy, after watching, a youtube video, that was featured on reddit, of a young korean vender making the candy.
My Korean friend was going to Korea to visit family and I sent him with a request to return with this candy for me, alas he didn’t come across it and returned empty handed. Via Unilocal I discovered that Kings Candy was being made right here in Southern California.
Alex Goh’s cart is in front of the Hawaii Market in San Gabriel on Fridays through Sunday but I was there on a Sunday and he wasn’t there:(I called the number listed on Unilocal to see if he was still in business and lo and behold Alex answered himself. He said he was taking that sunday off but he was there yesterday and had left some freshly made candy inside the bread isle of the Hawaii Market. Sweet! I don’t get to see him make the candy but I do get to taste it. The candy is made from a hardened clump of honey that is stretched into 16,000 tiny strings of honey and then filled with a mixture of peanuts, coconut or sesame seeds. Watching the strings of honey multiply in the making of the candy is captivating.
I shared the candy with my friends, with the caveat, that before they tasted it they had to watch the you tube video so that they could appreciate the art. Everyone who obtained a sample appreciated the Kings candy and the art of making it.

My girlfriend loves me more after I convinced her to try the Dragon Whiskers Candy at the June 626 Night Market! She fell in love with the candy! (She was already in love with me, whew). Alex’s candies offer just the right level of sweetness!

Alex Goh is amazing! His dragon whiskers candy (also called dragon’s beard candy) is so good. I first discovered dragon’s beard candy three years ago while in South Korea. Alex Goh is the only person on the west coast of the US who makes dragon whiskers candy. I was so happy that I found out about him online. I called him to confirm that his stand in front of Hawaii Supermarket was open, then made the trip there. He asked me if I wanted a demonstration, and I said yes please. It was fun watching him work his magic making this delicious candy! He had three kinds for sale, peanut, coconut, and sesame. They were only $ 5 a box. Note that dragon whiskers candy is best eaten fresh! If it sits too long, it’s not nearly as good. I highly recommend Alex Goh’s dragon whiskers candy.

After having dragon whisker candy made by Alex at the 626 night market, I knew I wanted it as my wedding favors. Logistically, I knew it would be difficult, as the candies can’t be pre-​made and sit around. They would have to be made the day before and not earlier. Alex really came through making them the day before for a huge wedding party. He wrapped them in treat bags that I had provided for him with a twist tie. He put two in each bag. Since this was more labor intensive and I didn’t want to sit and twist ties onto each bag the day before the wedding, I agreed to pay him more for the labor. He did put in his business card to shape the bag and protect the candy, so if you ever want to order these for a party, be sure to provide your own paper to shape and hold the candies.
The candies themselves were a huge hit, well as far as I can tell from my friends. They loved the candies. I had one the day after and it was still light and flaky. The humidity hadn’t absorbed yet.
One tip, I had prepared silica gel (from JoAnn’s) in new socks to store in an airtight container to protect the candy from humidity. This, combined with the fact that Alex made it right before my wedding, ensured that my guests got flaky, delicate candy and not the slightly waxy texture that you get if you leave it out for a day or two.
I’m so glad that I was able to find Alex and have him make such unique wedding favors.
