History

Established in 1968.

The Alviso Branch Library is located in the northernmost point of San José, serving a population of 6,500 residents. This area has a large and growing ethnically diverse population; nearly 60% of which are Hispanic.

The former Alviso Branch Library was 800sf and occupied a building that was built in 1934 and then restored in 1984. The new Alviso Branch opened in September 1999 and is a substantial improvement in services, measuring 4,460sf (not including the Community Center). Features of the new building include a technology area, tutoring room, a joint-use Community Room with the Community Center, and a local history collection that attracts students from neighboring schools and universities.
