These guys were extremely helpful and knowledgable. We went to Home Depot first and after a little over an hour we finally tracked someone down. Of course he didn’t work in the landscaping/​gardening department but at least he asked us if we needed help.
Needless to say we opted to take our business elsewhere. Our search brought us to Artificial Turf Express in San Jose. From the second we walked through the door the experience was wonderful. We got all of our questions answered and covered some key items that never even crossed our mind.

Artificial Turf Express is a sister company of Heavenly Greens, and provides artificial turf and materials for the contractor/​DIYer. Being associated with an experienced installation team is a plus. This isn’t a side line for them – as turf is for many businesses.
I dedicated an entire day researching artificial turf, and after studying samples, watching installation videos and reading reviews, I choose to buy from Artificial Turf Express. I drove 2 hours from the Napa Valley to San Jose to pick up my supplies – and felt that it was worth it! The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and they carry quality materials. They offer a 10% discount on your purchase if you’ve signed up for their email. Installing artificial turf is a job that CAN be done by someone [with helpers!] who can take the time to prepare the area properly and is patient and careful when seaming.
Ours turned out great! We have 3 dogs, and natural grass just doesn’t last with them playing and peeing on it. [Not to mention the cost of WATER here in St. Helena!] I had read reviews in which dog owners wrote that their dogs LOVED the artificial turf… but I was truly surprised to watch our dogs romp and play on it!
If you live in the Bay Area and are considering installing turf yourself, I highly recommend Artificial Turf Express. The show rooms are very helpful – as is the staff, who will take large samples outside so that you can see how they look in the sun. The small mailed sample I liked at first was superseded by another turf that didn’t look as appealing – until I saw large samples of them outdoors. They have solid information on installation – based on their experience. [As in, «Don’t use Decomposed Granite-​DG-​as a base for turf! It doesn’t drain well.”]
They have materials in stock, so once you choose your turf, you’re out the door. I liked that – no choosing from a tiny square; no waiting a week or more for the supplies to come in. I went down with a truck and open-​ended trailer to pick everything up. [Know that MOST turf comes in 15 foot rolls.] They also offer delivery.
There is quite a range of quality in turf from various suppliers – some are woven into a backing that is little more than «blue tarp» material! Some comes on a solid plastic backing with holes punched in it every 3 inches or so – and won’t drain very well. What is intended for sports may not be right for your yard. Get the good stuff, and go with an experienced company.
