Dad & Sons Mighty Movers

Initial conversation:
Me: «I’m moving my small 2 bedroom apartment 3 miles. The old place is downstairs, and about 100 feet from the loading zone. The new place is on the second floor, parking will be tricky, but there’s an elevator, and I don’t have much furniture.»
Gabe: «Ok.two guys, $ 70/​hour, 3 hour minimum. That includes everything.»
Me: «Everything is included? Do you have furniture pads, or do I need to provide them?»
Gabe: «The price includes everything, the guys, and all the equipement. If you want 3 guys, it’s $ 95/​hour.»
Me: «We don’t have much stuff, two guys should be fine. How’s 9am on ¹⁰⁄₂₄?»
Gabe: «We’ll be there. It’ll be my son, Matt.»
Day of the move:
9:00am…movers aren’t here yet.
9:15am…still no movers
9:23am…arrived! No big deal, as long as I’m not charged, right?
Matt: «Sorry we’re late, my alarm didn’t go off. What time is it, I don’t have my cell phone.»
Me: «9:23. No worries. Let’s get started.»
Matt: «The new place is on the second floor. We need 3 guys for that.» (The other two guys get out of the truck). You should have ordered 3 guys. I guess we’ll only charge you for two, but you should have ordered 3.“
Me: «ok…well Gabe said two would be fine, and we are helping too, so it should go pretty quick and smoothly, let’s get started.»
10:45am — everything is loaded in the truck — cool, that was quick!!!
10:50am, depart for the new apartment exactly 3 miles away. Confirmed that the movers had the right directions — with stop lights, the drive is 10 minutes long.
11:35am…movers finally showed up at the new place. Some smoke break, huh?
Lots of waiting, loads of stuff coming into the new apartment, more waiting…
1:30pm, they’re done.
Me: «ok…4 hours at $ 70/hour…that is $ 280, I have cash.»
Matt: «wait…no…uh…»
Moving guy #1: «no, man, 7 times 4 is 28… she’s right.»
I give Matt $ 300 in cash. I get no change.
As I begin unpacking, I notice:
daughter’s mattress is ripped
my bedframe is broken and chipped
Both dressers are scraped and chipped
Couch is stained with dirt (smeared in) and has splinters in the fabric where it was dragged on the truck floor
…every piece of furniture is beat up. they didn’t use any pads and when they used tie-​downs, they didn’t protect any of my furniture from the ropes…
I don’t think Gabe was too happy with his guys when I called him to let him know how this went.
I am not unhappy with the price, and I didn’t request a refund… though now I have to pay more money to fix all they broke. ugh…
Long story short… run away… you are better off just trashing your stuff yourself.
