Effie’s Cleaners & Alterations

This small dry cleaner located in the Evergreen area is wonderful. Effie and her staff are friendly, attentive and exactly the small kind of business you feel welcomed to whenever you go in.
We have used them for everything from dry cleaning to alterations and they always get the work done on time and with excellent results. However, recently we had a small issue that could have ended very badly, fortunately, there is a happy ending.
Shortly after our wedding we decided to get the wedding dress cleaned and preserved. They explained this service is sent to a 3^rd party vendor, who they’ve used for many years. Feeling confident (and feeling the price was quite reasonable) we left the dress. A couple of weeks went by and we were contacted to pick it up. Upon opening the box to the viewing window, much to our horror it was the wrong dress! Mortified Effie promised to get right on it, and within a couple of days they found it.
Thank God that if this had to happen, it happened here. Effie was as concerned as we were and made it her business to work with the vendor to find it. It is because of this attention and great customer service that they will have our business for years to come, and I would recommend to anyone looking for a great cleaners.

Really nice people. But if im going to pay 60.00 for three suits a shirt and a ladies blazer, the service better be up to par. Unfortunately, it was not.
My jacket was roughly handled and now the stitching on the sleeve is coming loose. The pants were not pressed very well so they have creases in places that shouldn’t. Also, everything wasn’t ready when it was supposed to be.
Supposedly they send out cloths to another place? So they dont do the work there?
Next time, going to send my stuff to a vietnamese place down the street. This place probably sends their stuff there anyway.

The good: Very friendly and helpful staff. Did a good dry cleaning job on a suit.
The bad: laundering 4 shirts put terrible rust-​like and grease-​like spots on 3 of them. Second go-​round removed the spots. Did not remove spot on tie dry cleaning, returned to me very wrinkled. Second attempt removed the spot, but returned to me very wrinkled. Failed to remove light stain on a silk shirt even after second attempt, also was returned very wrinkled, and I was told nothing could be done about wrinkles. I removed the spot by carefully scratching with my fingernail, and pressed out wrinkles between towels.
The ugly: completely ruined a silk Banana Republic sweater. Put a big, thick rust stain on the front, bilateral rust stains at exact same spot on both sleeves. After second attempt, no improvement. I was told nothing could be done. This is one of my favorite sweaters! Started gently cleaning the spots with toothbrush and gentle soap. Now spots are almost out…
Having to return twice was a pain. Having my sweater ruined major fail! Maybe the old foggies who live in the Villages are satisfied with the quality of the laundering and dry cleaning (maybe because they can’t see…) I was definitely disappointed!

After making me return twice to achieve an acceptable result with some, and ruining other clothes, you have the unmitigated gall to insult me by characterizing my clothes as old and worn out?! Yes I did have a twenty year old hand made shirt which was only of sentimental value. That is the shirt you returned wrinkled and the minor stain (which I was later able to remove with my finger nail) untouched. That was the only «old» item I brought in for cleaning.
You offered to reimburse me for your unsatisfactory service. I refused. You offered to clean the items again. And, whereas you did remove, on the second go round of laundering the stains you set into my dress shirts, it did not appear that you bothered to redo the dry cleaning.
The condescending tone of your reply is very different from your contrite — and now I see, fake — politeness.
I wrote an honest review of the service you provided. I wish I hadn’t deleted the photos I took of the sloppy work you performed.

I love Effie’s!!! I have been coming here for years and Effie is so amazing.
You name it Effie can alter it. I have brought in a countless number of pants, skirts, and a dress or two, even a bathing suit and they have all been awesome. I would recommend Effie’s and cleaners/​alterations to anyone who needs high quality alterations and cleaning. Their prices may be a little be more for certain things however you get the quality you pay for and if you are getting your favorite pieces cleaned and altered then you want it done right and this is the place to come.
I love this place and will continue to come here as long as I live in San Jose.

I came here to get a dress altered. The shop is pretty small from what I remember and the area to change in and get measured for things to be altered was pretty small too. But the lady was really sweet to my kids and she was very informative of the quality of the bridesmaids dress that I needed altered. I believe their dry cleaning services offer a more «healthier» way of dry cleaning too.

Hate to be the odd one out, but I really felt I was steered in the wrong direction for this one.
Came in initially to get my wedding gown dry cleaned. The lady behind the counter who started to assist me was nice enough. Then interrupts another lady whom I assume is the owner. She asks me to take my gown out of the garment bag so that she can inspect it, which is understandable but then she had the nerve to ask me if my wedding gown is old?! Because if it were, you don’t handle «old» garments? Here she is working on an off the rack David’s Bridal tulle mess in her hands and she’s questioning my one of a kind Tadashi Shoji, which was only worn less than three weeks ago!
After, she proceeds to sell me on boxing my gown after cleaning for an additional charge. When I declined, she sarcastically questioned whether I would be wearing it again?! Not that it was any if her concern, but I was planning on reselling it which was why I was not in any rush. However, she couldn’t even give me an estimated turn around time! Appearently they have to ship out all wedding gown services and don’t have an expectant date. She said they would call me when it comes back in, but don’t expect it for at least a month!
I left the shop puzzled and then u-​turned as I realized I didn’t receive a quote with my service slip. Her condescending tone still didn’t stop as she unzipped the garment bag again and briefly glanced at my gown. As she gave me a three digit quote, she then commented «well for THIS dress…» Hardly competitive in pricing, but to be honest I probably would have went with it had it not been for her lack of respect leading up to this point. Wasn’t she just insinuating my that my gown was old and of no value for me to re-​wear?! As soon as I changed my mind about the cleaning, she demands for the service ticket back and literally tosses the gown back at me with the garment bag still unzipped!
Still shocked by the service level received by such a highly rated business. My garment was judged and then some!

It’s taken me a while to write this review, but it’s so well deserved. Effie has done alterations on a few dresses for me, including my wedding dress. After listening to the horrible saleswoman at Elegant Lace and ordering my wedding dress a size small (It will be fine, she said. Just lose one inch, she said…) I needed some emergency alterations done. No way was I ever going to fit into my dress. Effie was so sweet and wonderful. Every single time I went in for alterations, I got compliments from other patrons. She works fast and is incredible at what she does. Effie didn’t just make my dress fit, she made it look like it was made especially for me. I felt like the most beautiful girl in the world in my wedding dress and it’s all thanks to Effie.

This place is a cute little neighborhood spot for getting your dry cleaning done and it doesn’t hurt that they do alterations as well! Effie was so sweet and very helpful! I needed alterations done to a dress I was wearing to a wedding and my boyfriend needed his suit jacket altered. She helped us out promptly and when we got our clothes back a week later, they fit and looked great! I asked for something kind of hard to do and it was executed flawlessly. My boyfriends suit jacket fit him like a glove ! It was velvet and that’s a tough fabric to work with. Now, we bring all our dry cleaning and tailoring needs to Effie. She is great at what she does, so sweet and charges very reasonably! Come to Effie’s cleaners, you won’t regret it!

I’m in the whirlwind of getting ready for my wedding so I don’t have as much time as I’d like to gush over how wonderful Effie is, but here’s the short version:
I brought in a vintage, delicate wedding gown (over 40 years old) that needed some serious alterations. The lace neckline went all the way up my neck in a choking sort of way and I wanted to take it down below my collar bone while still maintaining the integrity of the dress (so much more complicated than I can even describe!). I also needed to add length to the gown, alter some material behind the lace around the bust, and take it in at the waist. To say I was nervous about the outcome is a *major* understatement! Effie did an absolutely gorgeous job!
I then gave her my vintage veil to make some adjustments to which she did.
Effie is professional, thorough, thoughtful to detail, supportive, talented, timely, with services fairly priced, and quite nice as well – her and her husband both.

Effie and her staff are very professional and accurate but I can’t help but wish that their turn around time was faster. It seems that most of the business is dry cleaning so when my simple denim hem takes a little over a week I get a little puzzled. Still, I keep going back to Effie for her location and excellent customer service!

I found this place on Unilocal,so thank you very much. They are awesome! I went there twice with very short notice for alterations. First time I went in for alterations for my dads pants and the second time with my sister for her wedding dress. Wedding dresses are very hard to alter and she did a great job. Both times we needed a very fast turnaround and Effie did an amazing job and on time. Her prices are also very reasonable. I will go there again and again and have recommended them to my friends and family.

Effie did a great job hemming my wedding dress, she also added some pick-​ups to the train and fixed some beading that was coming off. She was very detail oriented and professional. They have a little changing room where you can put your dress on to be fitted. When I asked her for her opinion on how long the train should be etc, she gave me an honest opinion. Prices were a bit high, but for the quality of work it was well worth it
i just took my dress in to be sealed into a box, they do all services at their store!

Effie helped me with my taffeta bridesmaid’s dress. She fitted me and made some recommendations in the bust area so that my dress would have a more modest fit. I came in a week and half before I was scheduled to leave for LA for the wedding and she had it done in 7 days. I’ve never had alterations done to my clothes before so I wasn’t sure what to expect price wise. It came out to be $ 30 but I was willing to pay more in order to guarantee that my dress would come out on time and in tact. Even though the shop is out of the way (waaaaay up in the hills by Silver Lake Country Club) they are really nice here and if I need a place that I can count on, I’ll definitely come back here.

Effie and Moshe are really nice and the service is great! They turn around dry cleaning fairly quickly and they also do alterations.

I bought my wedding dress online @ J. Crew Wedding and wanted a professional opinion on the fit since I wasn’t getting an official fitting from the vendor (closest J. Crew wedding store is in Los Angeles). I brought my dress to Effie’s on the recommendation of a friend and was very pleased with the level of customer service I received. She suggested a slight alteration in the bust area and was able to have the dress back to me a few days! I felt very comfortable leaving my precious dress in her care and look forward to wearing it on my special day!

I took a jumper I bought online to a cleaners down the street and they told me they couldn’t alter it better to fit me and that if I did find someone, it’d be really expensive.
SO since I’ve been to Effie’s, I decided to try her. She was so positive about altering it and how it would fit better. When I got the finished product, it seriously looked like nothing had been changed, and somehow, just fit me better. It was a bit expensive, but not too bad $ 35. I think I only trust Effie with my alterations. She’s wonderful

My first experience with Effie was when I bought a beautiful dress that was a 10, but needed to be tailored down to size 6. I took it in to Effie and she altered the dress, which is fully lined and did a wonderful job. The dress fits like a dream.
A few days later we had an EMERGENCY and Effie came to our resue, not that I would ask her to do this on regular basis, but she really rescued us. My daughter was a bridesmaid in a wedding and the bridesmaids dresses were all custom made. Unfortunately, when my daughter’s dress was picked up from the seamstress Wednesday before the wedding that Saturday it didn’t fit. My daughter had a preliminary fitting for the dress when she was measured by the original seamstress. When she went for the first fitting, the dress was huge on her and had to be significantly altered down. She went in for subsequent fittings and when it was finally delivered the Wednesday before the wedding the dress was not only too big, but it was about a size 10 on the right side and a size 12 on the left side. The shoulders were too big and the hem on the satin and chiffone skirt was very uneven. To put it mildly the dress was a disaster and my daughter felt like she looked like she was wearing a beige potato sack; unfortunately, she wasn’t too far off. Thank goodness Effie was able to rescue us and the dress. She graciously pinned the dress and assured Sarah that it would be okay and that she would have the dress ready for her the next day. Effie literally dropped everything and spent 2 days reworking the dress. It fit beautifully and my daughter and I were delighted with the transformation.

No longer open on Sundays. They put in hard work and deserve a day off.
I’ve never not been greeted with a smile here. The owners talk to you as if they’ve known you for a while. Fine work on dry cleaning — no messed up buttons or any of the other faults I’ve found with other cleaners.
Can’t personally comment on alterations but my cousin brought her wedding dress here for altering and it came back beautiful. If these guys can tackle a wedding dress, I’ll trust them with my snappy dress shirts.

Dam good job on the clean. Impressed with the iron work. 3 dress shirts for $ 4.50. cheap. Owners daughter is beautiful!
