Lekha is an independent publishing company that publishes books for children. Children and adult authors can receive publishing guidance from our experienced publishing team.

Lekha’s education arm — Lekha School of Creative Writing conducts writing camps during the spring and summer all around the Bay Area. We run after school programs at our independent locations and enrichment programs in public and private schools. In addition to these contact classes Lekha offers students that are unable to come to our locations the ability to join our online classes.

History

Established in 2002.

Lekha Publishers started as a publishing company helping authors to self-​publish their books. Within a couple of years, we started teaching children the art of writing through camps and after-​school classes. Today, we run writing classes, camps, and enrichment programs at 23 locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Lekha teaches creative and critical writing to children and youth. Students will learn how to write stories, poems, plays, essays, and speeches. They will also study the art of research and journalism. As part of these classes, they will practice reading comprehension and enhance their vocabulary.

Business Owner

A writer and story teller since my childhood, I have always believed that children have the ability to be great writers. I have a degree in the Biological Science from India and a bachelors in computer science from Lehman College in New York City. While I enjoyed the sciences, a part of me always wanted to write and teach. I worked as a technical writer at a software company for five years, until I decided that creative writing was what I wanted to do. In the meantime, I volunteered as the chief editor for a children’s magazine, where my duties were, among others, to mentor children and adults in the art of writing for children.

I have a step son in 5th grade who struggled with his writing in 4th grade. My family and I decided to sign him up for Kristine Tsung writing class in the Mission district in Fremont. He normally does not enjoy writing and even less on a Saturday morning, but he genuinely enjoys the time he has in class. Kristine keeps it fun yet challenging for the students which keeps them engaged. We have seen immediate improvement in his writing. His writing grade in school has gone up as well as his grades in other classes because writing is used in almost every subject. I highly recommend this program for students at all different levels.

What a BIG disappointment ! My son took 2 weeks of writing class this summer and did not learn anything. The class was pack with 10 students ranging from 2nd thru 7th graders. No table to write on in a writing. Can u believe it? Please don’t waste your money here!
Btw. Don’t waste your time writing or calling them. You are not going to get a respond! They don’t care. They your money!

I enrolled my son in the reading and book report and public speaking summer camp.
This was a very bad experience. At the end of the camp, he had a few lines written
in one sheet — this was not even the beginning of a book report. The class is highly
dependent on the caliber of the instructor and for the amount they charge they
should be making this more worthwhile for the parents and the kids.
I wrote an email to them expressing my displeasure and did not even get a reply
inquiring about the details of my experience. Overall, very disappointed — $ 400 down the drain.

I have to say that I was surprised to read the poor reviews written by other parents. I few minutes ago I went online with the expressed purpose of trying to send the firm an email expressing my pleasure with their program. The Unilocal comments caught my eye.
My son is 12. I enrolled him in the essay writing class held at Heather Farms. This is just a one week program for 3 hours a day. My son didn’t want to attend (after all, it is summer). So, when I picked him up at the end of the first day, I thought for sure I was going to get an earful. I did, but not what I expected. He LOVED it. He told me that it was better than the golf camp he had gone to earlier in the day. It was better than school. It was better than his other sports camps. As a parent, I did a «happy dance.»
My son just finished his last day and he told me again how much he enjoyed it. It really made him feel confident about the structural aspects of writing an essay. He did not take the creative or expository writing classes, but I wouldn’t hestitate for a moment to sign him up for another class. I just hope they have some of these types of classes during the school year.
I will say that I have to agree with the parent who wrote about the teachers. I think it is important that they are critiqued in a classroom setting prior to letting them take on this type of important teaching. I think it is important to have continuity, so they should keep the same teacher throughout the program. Today, my son did have a different teacher, but I don’t know why. Funny enough, I never gave it much thought… until now.

I signed my child up for 4 weeks of Lekha for 6th-​8th grade in their San Jose location.
The program is dependent on the teacher you have. The critical writing program is a joke and if there are not enough students then the 4th-​8th grade is combined, and program is taught to the lowest level i.e. 4th grade.
The creative writing teacher was good, but again, students were not grouped as promised and advertised online, so 6th graders end up writing stories meant for 3rd graders as it’s a group exercise of writing a story.
We will not be going back. Infact, there was only one 7th grader and no 8th graders.
The program is at the best suited for 2nd and 3rd graders if they have a good teacher

I signed my son originally for 2 weeks of the Redwood City summery full-​day camp located in a church. Maybe it’s my fault that I didn’t inspect the location in advance but I would think that it’s a no brainer for any writing camps/​schools to pay attention to what facility they are renting? I do not know their reason for choosing this place — but in any event — the main room was very dim. There are side lightings and no overhead lights at all for his group. It’s good for church activities but not for writing. I really can’t imagine anyone — let alone kids — to write in such dim environment for the entire day or even for an hour.
I talked to the person in charge and they said they will see what they can do. I called the office to raise my concern to see maybe to switch rooms/​bring in lights? Well — eventually — nothing was done. Still the same dim area. It’s an expensive camp — $ 410 with early bird discount per week. I end up canceling the 2nd week. Kids eye sight can go bad very easily. It’s a shame if the kids’ eye sight are negatively impacted due to this camp.
My son is still in the camp (this is his 2nd day) — I can’t comment on what he has learned yet but just the first impression is bad.

We have been very satisfied with Lekha through out the years that my daughter attended the school. She has always loved writing and Lekha helped her flourish.
She has published her first book. We are all very proud and happy with her achievement.

Our son has been going to Lekha Publishers for the past one year for writing classes. He really improved in his writing. He is very excited about going back to Lekha this year. As we like the teachers and instruction, we plan to put our daughter in Lekha this year. It is amazing to see the young writers from Lekha publishing some cool books.
We really appreciate what they are providing to kids.

My daughter attended these camps during summer and came out grinning ear to ear with confidence. She loved it and is sure that her writing conventions & strategies have gone better. The teachers are amazing and approachable and give honest feedback. The admin staff are sometimes behind in communication but I imazine it is common, when you are dealing with 23 locations with more than 1000 students. I am very glad I chose these camps for my daughter.

My boys attended the writing camp in Dublin for 4 wks full-​time over the summer. The instructors were different from week to week, this did not allow for growth or continuity. Some instructors were fantastic but others seemed to be just passing time. Don’t be fooled… just because instructors have a masters degree does not mean that they have experience in teaching, especially young children.
When speaking to administration about the lack of consistency in regards to instructors, I was assured that «Mark» would stay the remainder of summer with the exception of his vacation, but to my dismay, he never came back! He was sent away to teach at the Redwood City location. Don’t listen to any promises this company makes! As a customer who invested $ 3200, I assumed by opinion would matter.
My niece attended the camp in S.J. and their instructor walked off Wednesday, which left them with a new instructor mid-​week.
Bottom line: if you’re lucky, you get a really great instructor like,“Mark or Amy.” If you’re unlucky, you get an instructor like «Amanuel» that tells your kid to, «shut up! You’re talking too much!»

I signed my son up for the Creative Writing camp at the Latimer location. We signed up for both Weeks 3 and 4 in the summer. Halfway through Week 3, they called and left a message saying they had to cancel Week 4 due to low enrollment. I can understand that, but more than one week later, they have yet to refund the camp fees I paid in March for that last week. As for the camp itself, I find it acceptable but agree with the other reviewer that their emphasis was more on grammar and the teacher’s review was rather critical. My son is going into Grade 2 and their emphasis shd be on teaching kids to explore different writing styles and encouraging them to love writing.

I enrolled my daughter in a one week summer writing class at Shannon Community Center in Dublin CA that was offered by the Lekha School of Creative Writing. The class consisted of 5 days of 3 hour lessons. The class was supposed to teach students to write expository essays. However, the class basically focused on teaching the students grammar with little emphasis on writing an essay. I gave the school one star because I thought the teachers who taught the class did a good job with the students. However, I believe that the flaw with this class stems from the resources that were provided by the school, rather than the teachers themselves. My review might seem somewhat critical, but I am a former teacher, and I believe that the methods this school uses to teach children how to write is inadequate.

My niece attended a one week creative writing summer camp and loved it! The teachers were able to turn her on to reading and writing, She is mpre confident in her writing skills and loves to share her writings with me.
The teachers were wonderful (I was lucky to visit the school while visiting my niece), curriculum was age appropriate, maybe a little advanced in a good and challenging way. Too bad I don’t live in the area so I could send my little boy!
