Since completing his residency training at Georgetown University in 2002, Dr. Zare has performed more than 5000 advanced minimally invasive procedures.

Business Owner

Dr. Marc Zaré is a board-​certified surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He is considered to be a leader and one of the foremost experts of his field in Northern California.

Upon completion of his general surgery training at Georgetown University, Washington, DC in 2002, he received additional sub-​specialty training in advanced laparoscopic surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2004, Dr. Zaré was appointed an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Boston University, and the Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Surgical Simulation at Boston VA Healthcare system.

He later relocated his practice to San Jose, California where he currently serves as Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Director of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Dr. Zaré has authored numerous peer-​reviewed publications and book chapters, and has been an invited speaker at over 50 international, national and local meetings.

I can’t say enough about Dr Zare and his office. They were so helpful right from the first appointment. Everything was so coordinated and well communicated that by the time my surgery date hit, I had very little anxiety and no questions. He really took the time to go over the weight loss procedures available to me and helped me make a smart and informed decision. At 8 weeks post-​op, I have lost nearly 40 pounds and I feel great! If I could do it all over again, I would in a heartbeat, and I would choose Dr Zare for my journey. I believe in him so much that I recently recommended him to a friend.

I saw Dr. Zare for a minor procedure and he really put me at ease. He explained everything so I could understand what was going to happen. He even recommended a smaller and easier procedure that would give me faster results. You can tell he really does care about the patient and is not just about doing surgeries. He could have easily done the more expensive and invasive surgery but he picked the procedure that would be best for me. His staff are also extremely nice. I would recommend him for any minor or major surgery.

If you need hernia surgery, I’m not sure why you would go anywhere else!

I had my gallbladder removed by Dr Marc Zare by Laparoscopy procedure last May as out patient. He was recommended by my gastroenterologist Dr Balaa and after my first consultation with Dr Zare I felt confident he was the right surgeon for me. Surgery at Good Samaritan went very well. I had good post instructions which I carefully followed and I was back to normal pretty fast. I have had no problems at all since surgery and highly recommend Dr Zare, his staff is also very nice and competent.

I recently had a bilateral inguinal repair done by Dr. Zare.
I was diagnosed about 12 years ago with the hernia, but since it didn’t bother me I never got it done. About 3 years ago I decided it was better to take care of it now, while it wasn’t an emergency since these don’t heal by themselves. I started looking for a doctor, but never found anyone I felt comfortable with. The last guy I saw wanted to do an open surgery and that didn’t appeal to me.
Through my research, I knew it was important to find a surgeon who had done a LOT of laparoscopic surgeries — because these require a lot of skill. I couldn’t find anyone in San Francisco that had done a lot of these. Through Unilocal, I saw Dr. Zare’s reviews and decided to make an appointment to see how I felt with him.
I had my first consultation with Dr. Zare and he seemed very capable and confident, and had done hundreds (if not thousands) of these surgeries. He was the only doctor I’ve seen over 12 years that I trusted with my surgery. I made an appointment right away and decided to just get it done. Dr. Zare made it sound as routine as could be.
I didn’t think about the surgery at all until the day of. Amelia, his assistant, took care of the scheduling, insurance pre-​approvals, and anything else needed. The day of the surgery I showed up at the outpatient surgery center, got the IV put in, pre-​op prep done, and went into the surgery room. Dr. Zare was there, and next thing I know I’m awake and my hernias are repaired.
Went home that same day, it felt like someone had punched me in the stomach but there was no pain when laying down or standing up, it was just during the transition from one position to the other. I took the pain meds he prescribed only that day. I was on Advil the next morning for a couple of days. I was up and walking that same evening (carefully), and up and walking/​going outside the next day. Driving was a bit tough because of getting in and out of the seat so I minimized it. I had my surgery on a Tuesday. By Monday I was back at work.
No complications, recovery was exactly as Dr Zare described. When the nurse from the surgery center called me the next day to check in, she asked me to rank my pain level from 0 – 10. I said 0, because standing up I felt no pain.
It was worth waiting 12 years to find Dr. Zare. I wouldn’t trust my laparoscopic repair to anyone else! Thank you Dr. Zare.

I had a bilateral laparoscopic hernia repair performed by Dr Zaïre. I was delighted with how quick and easy the operation was, and how rapid the recovery. I was a little bit sore for maybe 24 hours after the operation and my abdomen was somewhat swollen. However, within a week I completed a 50 mile bicycle ride and went skiining the week after that. All with no pain or discomfort. A great job. Thank you.

I found Dr. Zaré by Good Samaritan Hospital, via their Bariatric department. I also checked with my general practitioner and endocrinologist both of which had patients that had Dr. Zare do bariatric surgery on. So, I felt really comfortable knowing that I was choosing the right surgery. I met with him and his staff, they explained my options. I was new to learning of the «Gastric Sleeve» surgery until I met with them. He went through the process from beginning to end, and made it very clear that this was the best and safest option for me. They referred me to a Surgery Coordinator, dietician and a great therapist who helped pave the way to a very successful surgery. There insurance coordinator helped dealing with my insurance company, especially when I was denied. The Coordinator re– applied and got it approved. I think the most important thing is to take the information binder given to you and review it. Go to the various website and learn what post ops will be like. There are many changes that you have to make after surgery and these are for life.
My surgery went smoothly; this was the right decision for me. I would recommend Dr. Zaré and greatly appreciate everything he and his staff did for me.

Highly recommended. Had gastric sleeve surgery in Feb. 2015. over night in the hospital and felt great immediately following surgery. Minor sore stomach the next couple of days but no big deal.
Dr Zare is excellent in explaining the procedure and what to expect. I have lost 49 lbs in a little over 10 weeks. Would do it again in a second.

A little over two years ago, Dr. Zare did my Nissen Fundoplication for my GERD. I went from being extremely ill and unable to eat anything without reflux to having a perfectly normal stomach. I can now eat anything I want. I have a cup of coffee every morning and a glass of wine a few times a week.
Before surgery I experienced constant indigestion, bloating, trapped gas, and delayed motility. Now I have none of these symptoms.
Prior to surgery I took Aciphex, Reglan, Axid, and Simethicone regularly; now I take only one Aciphex.
I wish I had done the surgery sooner, because it radically improved the quality of my life.
If you need to have a Nissen Fundoplication, you won’t find a better surgeon than Dr. Zare.

Dr Zare fixed my inguinal hernia. He was able to see me at pretty short notice and get me on his operating schedule within 4 days of the hernia. I highly recommend him– he is calm and professional in his demeanor, and is very competent in his work. His office is also very good at pre and post op follow up and instructions.

I was referred to Dr. Zaré by my general practitioner for a consult for bariatric surgery. I had been thinking about doing this for about 5 years. My insurance changed this year and I found out that it was a covered service, so I jumped at the opportunity to receive the help. I met with him and his staff, specifically Amelia, and was extremely impressed from the get go on how knowledgeable & eager they were to help me understand my options. I didn’t even know there was such a thing a «Gastric Sleeve» surgery until I met with them. He went through the process from beginning to end, and made it very clear that this was the best and safest option for me. I must have called the office at least a dozen times prior to getting my pre-​surgical approval. They referred me to a Surgery Coordinator, dietician and a great therapist who helped pave the way to a very successful surgery. Although I had to do a lot of the footwork in order to get my insurance to approve it, Dr. Zaré, Amelia and everyone else involved were also key players on my path.
My surgery was approved and within 7 days I was on the schedule to get it done. There was no turning back at that point and they all assured me it was the right decision and that I would be wondering why I hadn’t done it sooner! They were right! Everything went smoothly and Dr. Zaré also repaired a hiatal hernia during the sleeve surgery.
I would highly recommend Dr. Zaré and greatly appreciate everything he and his staff did for me. My life will forever be healthier and I have them to thank for that.

Tremendous doctor… excellent at what he does… calm and reassuring in his manner and relationship to the patient. In July I had gastric sleeve, hernia repair and gallbladder removal. I am not normally an anxious person but I felt worried about getting the gastric sleeve done. I actually fell apart right before surgery… he was great with this crying upset woman… I research my potential doctors always, and his background is supurb! I would recommend Dr. Zare and his staff unabashedly, without hesitation.

Dr Zare performed the gastric sleeve surgery on me and I do not think it could have went any smoother. I went for the initial consultation in April and had the surgery in June. From the first appointment to the follow ups, it has been smooth, professional, and so easy. Dr. Zare is great, had no complications after the surgery, and he broke down the process so it’s easy to understand. Amelia is such a star! She is so patient when explaining everything and so easy to work with regarding all the necessary pre-​surgery requirements. If I had to re-​do my surgery, I would definitely choose Dr. Zare again!

Its been just over one year since Dr. Zare repaired my inguinal hernia and this review is unfortunately long overdue. Bottomline: I loudly echo all the five star comments below. Read on for the specifics around my case:
I did EXTENSIVE research online — read several technical papers and closely reviewed statistics between open and minimally invasive repairs. I live in Marin County and was offered multiple surgeons in Marin and San Francisco that I ruled out based on my research. I found Dr. Zare in San Jose and like others was convinced after my appointment with him. Thorough, thoughtful, experienced, confident and candid are all words that describe Dr. Zare’s style in our first interaction. By total chance, there was a cancellation in Dr. Zare’s surgery schedule and I was able to get in for the procedure the very next day. Normally, I’d have wanted to «sleep on it» but given the research I’d done and the quality of the discussion we had regarding my options and likely outcomes I felt completely comfortable.
I forgot to mention that I was 42 at the time of surgery and had developed the hernia mountain biking to stay in shape between triathalons. I was focused on quality of repair and rapid recovery time and believe Dr. Zare delivered both well beyond my expectations.
I was home by noon the day of surgery. After an restful afternoon on the sofa w/​ice and OTC pain meds, I was able to go for a short walk to the end of the block and back around 5 pm. My core felt tight but no pain. I slept well w/​no pain and the only time I noticed pain was getting out of bed too quickly the next morning. I slowed down and took more OTC pain meds and was fine. I gradually lengthened and quickened my walks over the next week and was able to comfortably jog at 9 — 10 days. Punchline is that I did a sprint tri 29 days post surgery and felt great during and after. Its now one year, several races, P90X workouts later and I can honestly say that the hernia repair never enters my mind.
I share all this not to brag, but to attempt to give you a sense of the quality of Dr. Zare’s work. I can only credibly speak to my own experience and am certainly not recommending my unendorsed post op routine for someone who’s not otherwise pretty fit going into surgery. However, If you’re an athletic person, have done your research and determine minimally invasive surgery is your best option, look no further!

Dr Zare’ was awesome from ER to OR. He has such a calm and knowledge bedside manner. I knew from the moment he came to us in the ER he was the surgeon for us and knew we were in great hands. My son was confident in every word that he spoke and never seemed to be afraid or concerned of what Dr. Zare’ spoke. I will definitely keep his card and number on file if any of other 4 boys need this surgery as I got my appendix out almost 20 yrs ago. I will recommend him to all my family and friends. Dr. Zare has performed two different surgeries on me and both were a huge success. About five years ago I had surgery to repair an Umbilical Hernia caused by being overweight. The repair was quick and successful. You can’t even see a scar and it has never bothered me since.
About a year and a half ago I had the Gastric Sleeve weight loss surgery. Since the surgery I have lost 115 pounds. The results are amazing. Thanks to this particular surgery I now lose my appetite after eating a reasonable portion of food, whereas before my appetite seemed to be endless and I could eat until I was uncomfortable and couldn’t eat anymore. Although the bulk of the weight loss occurred in the first 6 months, I’ve found with moderate exercise and self control I have had no problem keeping the weight off and have in fact continued losing weight nearly 18 months later. The surgery is just a tool to help you change your lifestyle and eating habits, but unless you are willing to make those changes eventually the weight will come back.
Dr. Zare is very direct and honest. He provides all the information you need to succeed both before and after the surgery. Although it took me years to finally decide to have the surgery, now that I’ve had it I’d do it again in a heart beat. And no question I’d use Dr. Zare again!
