History

Established in 1948.

Modern Lock and Key was started in San Jose California in 1948 by Mr. Herb Lentz. Herb opened his shop at 821 S. First St., Modern Lock was purchased in 1985 by Ken Williams after Herb decided to retire. The shop stayed at the First street location until a fire destroyed the building. The fire completely devastated the shop and with no insurance all was lost. Ken relocated the shop to a very tiny location at 903 Vine street. and due to the size, or lack of size, and the need to provide more mobile service to the Silicon Valley. We became more of mobile only locksmith. In 1993 I, Darrin Wicker, purchased Modern Lock and I am as determined as Herb was to continue the same, long-​lasting, dependable service that we are known for. I am also to pleased to announce our 3rd location at 1615 Westwood Drive in Willow Glen. We were the first Silicon valley locksmith to have a web site that we still (as you can tell) write and publish our selves since 1996. Today we offer a mobile service as well

Used this outfit to install a peephole on our front door, via an Angie’s List deal. He was very professional and did inform me ahead of time that it could cause the door to splinter — unfortunately, it did. That was assumption of risk on my part so I understand. His suggested resolution was to use a marker to color the wood. Seemed like a relatively rookie approach to fixing it, I thought. Although I’m not a handyman myself, I was still able to figure out that a much better approach was to use wood filler, sand it down, and then finish it. Still doesn’t look great, but looks much better than using a marker would’ve. What I did not assume the risk of was having the peephole installed ¼″ off center on the door. This, I don’t understand. Darrin did come back out to take a look, to his credit, which is why I’ve given two stars instead of one. Unfortunately, the response I received was that nothing could be done about it. Seems like a simple tape measure and marking should’ve done the trick to centering it.

Just had my door locks re-​keyed. The person who came to service is Darrin. Very professional — and fun to chat with. Showed up in 30 minutes. Did it quickly. Charge is very reasonable — he will tell you over the phone. I got his number, 408−294−2364, email
, from another person who used him in the past. His service is much better than other Morgan Hill locksmiths I found on Unilocal.Don’t waste your time contacting anyone else.

I went here to re-​key 3 of my locks. I had called a few other locksmiths and I found this moderns price to be most reasonable. This is a father and son business and the son is the one I worked with. He said he had been re-​keying for almost 20 years and it was evident with the speed and precision he worked with.
Of the 3 locks, I did not have a key for one of them. I was handy enough enough to bring all the three locks to their store. They rekeyed it within a few minutes including the ones. He charged me 12 $ per cylinder for the ones I had a key for and 17.5 $ for the one i did not. I asked them how much they would have charged for them to come out to me and do it, they said the same price as above + 45 $ for coming out to your home. Every other lock smith i dealt with wanted way more. Their keys are on the expensive side, 2.50 $ a pop.
Compare this with AA locks, Their quoted price was 15 $ per cylinder the ones I had key for, and 45 $ to make a key for the one I did not plus another 15 for rekeying (This was their quoted price on the phone). So way cheaper than anybody else.

I was extremely thankful for him coming out on such short notice before the weekend. He came out on time and finished the job by the time I needed him to.

I first met Darin and David (and the rest of the family) while they were making an attempt at an additional business in addition to their locksmith business about 10 years ago. Darin has always struck me as being a customer oriented person who will pursue all reasonable means to make a customer happy.
I recently purchased a relatively new vehicle that only had one remote/​key. Knowing the kind of inflated mark-​ups that auto dealers charge, I procured the same manufacturer’s part through a third-​party at about 1⁄3 the cost. Though Darin’s labor charge was about the same as that of a local auto dealership, having someone that you know and can trust do the work sure cuts down on the anxiety. David was able to cut the key, program the key transponder, and the remote in about 15 – 20 minutes and that included a bit of conversation and catching up on things that had transpired since I last saw him.
The one issue that others have cited is that there is often no one at the shop, since this is primarily a father-​son operation, and most of their work is done on customer premises. They do not have a fleet of trucks and a big staff, they’re just trying to make an honest living. Got to give them credit for that.
As for not getting an answer on the phone, you’ll want to listen to their voice-​mail message (I missed it the first time as well.) Apparently, if you don’t get an answer during business hours, just hang up and dial again. I’ve always gotten an answer when I called back a second time.

My garage emrgency key was lost and we could not open the garage by our remote control from outside due to the power having issues. Called Modern lock and security on Sat early in the morning at around 8 AM something and made an appointment with him at 9.40am. I also called a few other locksmiths and their price was 40% more than what this shop gave me.
He came very on time, made two keys for us in a very short time. He also showed my tenants how to use the keys to unlock the garage in case of power being shut down.
Overall, great job for excellent price.

Locksmith with a physical store front that is open all day on Saturday. I had 2 house keys made and 2 mail keys. They wouldn’t accept the Unilocal deal because they said my house keys aren’t regular house keys??? Anyway it was $ 3 per key.
BTW I needed another set and the second place I went to used a «regular» house key, so I’m pretty sure I was lied to, all for an extra $ 6

Darin is the bomb
I called because I needed a lock changed /​rekeyed. He was very professional on the phone and extremely flexible in schedul9ng.
I called a couple of other locksmiths and decided to go with Darin because of the time he took to answer questions on the phone.
When he arrived he was able to quickly redo the lock and then provided the number of keys I needed so I saved a trip to Lowes to make keys.

Finding a locksmith that has a storefront these days is near impossible. These guys do, and they know their stuff.
I was looking for a relatively uncommon part, and they had it. If you go in, look for the 24″ backset deadbolt on the wall. A piece of history!

I called Darin and told him what I was trying to accomplish which was adding a keyed lock on a bedroom sliding glass door… a long shot since the last locksmith I had out to change all my door locks said it wasn’t possible. Darin said to text him pictures of the door. He said he could do it! Unbelievable. We scheduled an appt. He was on time and friendly. And in no time, he had the keyed lock on my sliding glass door! A while ago, exchanging the locker for the house, I went to Home Depot to make duplicate keys for my kids. I had the locker with me to simplify the work. Finally, the workers there used about 10 blank-​keys to make the only 2 that worked. They told me sorry that they cannot make other keys for my locker successfully and don’t want to waste additional blank-​keys. I was upset believing that if they can’t, nobody else can also. Recently, I really needed additional keys and looked for somebody on Unilocal.
I have chosen «Modern Lock & Security» because of very positive overall grade and «5 stars» feedback.
Darrin is SO professional!!! He has not waste even one blank key! I ordered 10 keys just in case. And all of them work, moving smooth such as originals. I know that it is supposed to be like this, but having negative experience before, I expected that to make duplicate-​keys for my locker is not easy task. He spent only about 15 minutes!

Called Darrin today and asked if he has time to come by and install an electronic lock for my entry and another lock at my garage entry. He was pleasant, professional, polite, and courteous. He asked me if I had already purchased all the locks because the ones I wanted were special orders, I said «No», but I can go to Home Depot and get them. So off I went and got one lock, meanwhile he called his son to see if he had any in stock. I came home and called him and requested him to be at my place at 1730, he arrived early and installed my new entry lock quickly. Job was done right and clean, will make an appointment to finish up the rest of the locks.

If I could give these guys a sloppy, wet kiss on the cheek I would. Thank you, Modern Lock, for what you do.
On my way up to a camping trip, I had my car broken into by hooligans who stole my backpack. This backpack also had my house keys in it, which immediately made me worry that they would break in the first chance they get. I called up a couple other guys in desperation that they could get my house locks changed out (same day) so my wife could sleep in peace. Nothing.
Called Modern Lock, and not only did they come out that same afternoon, but they also took care of three different locks for just under $ 100. They could have easily sensed my desperation and ripped me like many other service providers, but instead they just gave me great service at a great price.
And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is how you get a 5-​star review.

We have a lock that we accidentally put on backwards on a side gate at our house. We live about 15 blocks from where this locksmith is located. They wanted $ 65 to cut the lock off. Really? It would take them 10 minutes to get here and about 5 min to cut the lock off.
So, you just made sure we will never use your company for any locksmith needs… ever.
