Been going there for years. Have always had a great experiences. They do what they say, are always able to do adjustments and have been open to give my my prescription so that I could go elsewhere to get them filled (I have some sunglasses that they can’t do).
Their prices are fair and their selection is more than adequate.

Not sure I can even give them 1 star here!!! Interesting as I read this to see it sounds like this is more the norm of horrible service, liars and down right rude staff. The Dr. s themselves are great but the rest of the staff is useless!!! Makes my blood boil just talking to the office manager. She hung up on me 4 times now in a matter of 2 weeks all while trying to get contact lenses which they continually forgot to order or misplaced!!! Don’t waste your time!!!

The service is awful.
Dr. McGrath himself is nice and professional but his staff is horrible. They made you feel that you, as a customer is wrong and unreasonable. The staff is inflexible, liars and extremely rude. It was my first experience and will be the last time.

I’ve received such terrible service here and honestly it’s beyond me. I had such a nice 1^st impression of Dr. McGrath himself. After getting my eyes examined, I picked out a pair of glasses, paid the total amount and was assured to receive a phone call from the Dr. at the end of the day to answer a concern I had prior to submitting the frames for prescription lens. In short, I never received a phone call, I’ve called at least a couple times a day each day since my fitting and every time I was told the dr. would call me soon. It’s been 5 days and I’m tired of waiting and calling for a conversation that would have only literally taken 2 minutes out of the doctors time. Needless to say, I went into the office today and cancelled my order.
I understand they are busy with end of year and all but I’m busy too. I have a life and my time is valuable just as much.
I completely got the sense that all Dr. McGrath’s office cares about is money. Once they have your money… the customer service ends there. It’s quite a shame. No one should ever feel this way.

Very disappointing experience! Beware of Shelley and her assistant who is in charge of checking out patients!!! Shelley acts as though she dropped down from Heaven and the assistant walks back into her room in the middle of a sentence. She is not able to explain what the charges are for and runs inside mid-​sentence!!!

No Class! not going back until they hire a real office manager. I decided to go here for a prescription as I was in the area one day. I called and confirmed that they would give me a measurement of my pupillary distance (pd) as part of the exam/​prescription. Of course I went through the exam, asked the optometrist McGrath if they’ll still give me that measurement, and he confirmed during the exam. The reason being that I wanted to order my glasses online from Warby Parker and help those in need while getting my glasses. And they require PD measurement when ordering. Of course the appointment ends and they ask for copay without asking if I had any questions. So I got a little suspicious and asked if they could give me a copy of my prescription first and they did, when I asked why the PD part was blank they said they only do that for their patients. What am I? Asked for an explanation and office manager Shelly started shaking of nervousness and almost crying when I explained what I was expecting. Keep in mind measuring PD takes 10 seconds (as McGrath agreed — look into a binocular type device and get the measurements). She got defensive and to show «who was in charge» made me sit in a different chair next to the one I was in. Power play in the eye office, I guess. Then McGrath came out and acted like he never said he would give me the measurement. So I paid the copay, asked them to save themselves some postage and shred my reminder postcard, and left. McGrath was nice, but Insecure Shelly is bringing the office down. No idea how to serve customers. I always order from Warby, and so I never have issues getting that measurement because while it isn’t profitable for the optometrist, the others all understand that Warby benefits others and thus have no issue giving me that measurement. Shame on McGrath for not manning up to the whiney Ms Shelly.

Dr. McGrath was highly recommended to me when I first moved to San Jose. The whole staff is friendly and very accommodating. Great selection of frames and I have never felt pressured to buy any when i come in for my yearly visit.

I’ve been going to Dr. McGrath for years and would even fly in when out of the country for specific eye health needs. He, and his staff, are wonderful.

First time being in this place and let me tell you something those guys know what they’re doing the office staff was super friendly they took my appointment with 15 minutes notice the doctor was very polite to check my eye and was very explaining me what the situation there is tons of parking space in the office itself is very nice I would highly recommend it

Have had Dr. McGrath as my optometrist for over a decade. Super clean office, great staff, and always great communication from the Dr. post examination. We recently moved to Las Vegas and I greatly miss Dr. McGrath and my other physicians in the San Jose area. They always made me feel like family. Highly recommend this practice.

My regular optometrist. I’ve been going to Dr. McGrath’s office for years. I got my first pair of glasses and first prescription of contacts here, so this office and I go way back. I’ve never had any problems with the nice people here; I’ve always been able to schedule appointments, or even when a screw comes loose in the hinges of my glasses, I’ve been able to get it fixed at Dr. McGrath’s. The annual eye exam doesn’t take too long and isn’t painful. The only problem I have is when I have to try not to blink as this machine blows a puff of air into my eyes. I would recommend this office to anyone living in the Almaden area as its super close, and convenient (in the same plaza as Safeway and a Starbucks)

I recently switched from another local optometrist to Dr. McGrath… he and his staff are super friendly, efficient and knowledgeable.
I’d been told I couldn’t wear soft contact lenses due to dry eyes. Dr. McGrath tried numerous types and combinations… he was very patient! I was about to give up, but then he recommended trying a new type of soft lens using monovision, and it’s AMAZING. Super comfortable and good for distance and reading.

I’ve been coming here for 6 years now, and I never plan on switching optometrists! Usually Dr. Mcgrath sees me (no pun intended), and then one of his assistants helps me pick out frames. I’ve loved every pair of glasses I’ve gotten from them. Their selection of Nine West is slightly on the smaller side but I always find something perfect. Recently I saw Dr. Choi, and she was amazing as well! I felt completely comfortable asking questions about my exam, and she recommended a great new brand of contacts for me. I love this place, and I definitely recommend it!

I was new to the area and decided to visit Dr. McGrath based on other Unilocal reviews and his convenient location. Dr. McGrath was very thorough and friendly. The office is clean but needs a little bit of an update. The staff is friendly and Alma was incredibly helpful in picking out a new pair of frames. I tried on at least 20!

Very nice staff! Dr. McGrath is very thorough and genuinely seems to care about your eyes, not just collect your exam fee. I had been to another eye doctor in the area that did the bare minimum and tried to find a way to maximum the charge to me. Dr. McGrath’s office was the opposite, doing more than expected and trying to make sure as much as possible was covered by insurance to try and minimize how much I would have to pay.

Dr. McGrath is very friendly and thorough. My family has been coming here for ages. Like the office décor. Thank you.

Dr. Mcgrath gives a better eye exam than the highly-​rated eye doctor I went to a couple of years ago, and they never make you wait. The staff is very competent, and the two optometrists (Dr. Mcgrath and a woman whose name I don’t know) are both first rate.
Why not five stars? Because on my first visit, they sold me on Varilux lenses, even though the correction I required was very minor. I spent weeks trying to get used to them, then asked for distance-​only lenses. They did replace the Varilux lenses with distance only at no cost. I did a lot of research on Varilux later, and learned they have a huge variety of patterns and models, one or more of which might have worked better for me. But this was never presented to me.
After two years, my vision changed, and they sold me new glasses. But I couldn’t tell the difference between the old and the new prescriptions (I kept the old ones to have a second pair). A year later, I went in for another test, and they told me my vision had changed again. When I discussed it with Dr. Mcgrath in detail, he said it was up to me whether to buy new glasses. When he dialed in the difference on the testing machine, I could not tell the difference between the newest prescription and the previous one.
Bottom line: Talk through your options carefully. With full information, you can make a good decision about what you need. Don’t just buy new glasses automatically.
Despite this complaint, I continue to use Dr. Mcgrath, and I’m not planning to go elsewhere.

The location is good with parking shared with Safeway. The office has a fair variety of designer frames, although a few more selections wouldn’t hurt.
The staff smiles, however the warm fuzzy isn’t there. Sometimes they forget you are the customer. Their attitude comes across as better than thou. The great thing in the office is the doctor himself, he is a down to earth, straight forward friendly guy. It makes me wonder how such a nice guy end up with a stuffy staff.
I would recommend Dr McGrafth even with the fair quality of service.

Costco let me down in the crunch. So I stopped by to get contacts and the staff and doctor were great. They scheduled me and went out of their way to make sure I had what I needed for my vacation.
Everyone was feeling and professional. I think I’ve found my place for glasses.
I will be back in January when my insurance renews.

I was new to the Almaden area and my neighbor recommended Dr. McGrath as wonderful Ophthamologist.
His office is very clean and his staff is very friendly and knowledgable. Dr. McGrath is very professional and is genuinely caring.
My entire family has had great experience with Dr. McGrath and his staff.
