LEARN TO RIDE! Bridges Equestrian School of Horsemanship specializes in all styles of riding, and all age groups. We are dedicated to making the connection between horse and rider, with quality instruction on quality school horses. A purpose built Riding School and Training Center, we are located at the beautiful Sycamore Trails Stable, with covered arenas and all the upscale ammenities (without the upscale cost). Shows, camps, clinics, riding and the United States Pony Club program make for the totally educated, well rounded Equestrian. Private and Group lessons available.

History

Established in 1981.

Ruthanna Bridges grew up playing and competing in the Equestrian Industry, returning after college in 1981 to start freelance training and instructing. In 1989 she opened Bridges Training Stable with her then 4 year old son Devon by her side. 20+ years later, Bridges Equestrian, Inc. has evolved to become the largest riding school in Orange County, and the reality of the dream of one horse-​crazy little girl.

Born in Long Beach California, Ruthanna’s riding career began in 1966 with a trip to the dump with her father. Ruthanna heard a horse winnie, and she was off. Dad and brother Bruce were forced to promise a trip to the stable next door in order to pry her from the chain link fence. The rest is history.

Ruthanna grew up riding Hunters, Western Pleasure, Gymkhana, Hunters, Eventers, and eventually Dressage. Some of the trainers she rode with include: Jimmy Williams of Flintridge, JoAnne Postell and Nancy Turrill of Foxfield, Richard Shrake, Mark Mullen, Tom Betts, Becky Maffai, Gregg Mosuer, Ila Kasad, Bill Gobie, Bob Anderson, Burt Phillips, and even clinics with Monty Foreman!

The current Bridges Equestrian, Inc. program is the vision of one little horse crazy girl, and her dream to provide the best environment for horses and horse enthusiasts to learn about each other.

I’d been struggling with my daughter; she was frustrated at school, every other activity we tried for her was a bust. She got kicked out of soccer, marched out of dance class, gymnastics, swimming and I had been getting calls and emails weekly for behavior issues with classmates and teachers. I read somewhere that horseback riding was a good way for kids to learn self control, get exercise, develop compassion and learn responsibility.
I called and spoke to Ruthanna about getting her in lessons and about my concerns. She was sympathetic, offered me fantastic advice and we got my daughter signed up.
Five weeks later, I have an entirely different child. So far she’s had lessons with Lu, Lauren and Rhi and each time she’s come back full of pride and confidence. They set the bar high for her and have been gently guiding her to be the best she can be. She feels safe, believed in and important. I’ve watched the staff not only with my child, but with other riders; they’re professional, patient, compassionate and are fantastic mentors to these kids. This is, bar none, the best thing we’ve ever done for my child, and Bridges Equestrian stables and staff have made an enormous difference in her life. Absolutely, ride here.

I rode here for three years before I had to stop and have nothing but good things to say about it. All the instructors are amazing and make you feel very safe and comfortable, and the horses are the sweetest! Along with a riding lesson you learn how to groom and tack your own horse, and if you stick around you can help with feeding, water buckets, turn-​outs, and cleaning tack. They also offer camps where you can try extra things like longeing and riding bareback. They are very accommodating with cancellations and makeup lessons, and I highly recommend this place especially if you are a beginner and looking to try riding for the first time.

We moved to OC for my husband’s new job in in June and are building in Nellie Gail because we thought how nice it would be to live in an equestrian community. Our daughter has been riding for a couple of years and we tried out the neighborhood facilities first before finding Bridges in San Juan Capistrano.
Every instructor at Bridges has impressed and encouraged our daughter and the atmosphere of camaraderie of all the girls has made her feel so included and accepted. That’s huge when you are moving from an area where you know everyone to one where you know no one!

I wanted to get something very special for my hubby’s bday, so I arranged for a private horseback riding lesson for him! Luckily for me, I managed to find Ruth Anna at Bridges Equestrian Center (aka Bridges Training Stable) and she really went out of her way to accomodate us.
The equestrian center is filled with beautiful horses and is very clean and well kept. Every one was very helpful and friendly, especially Ruth Anna and Lauren (the instructor). My hubby’s horse was named «Scooby Doo» and he was a really sweet boy. The lesson started with proper grooming and putting the saddle on the horse. Then, it’s about 45 minutes in the ring where you learn how to handle your horse properly, and how to ride without damaging your goodies! The lesson ends with a short ride around the center and with a brush down of the horse.
All in all, a fantastic experience! I think we’ll be back in the spring for another lesson. Maybe this time I’ll get on a horse too!

It’s scary showing up for the first time to try a new activity, especially when you know that everyone else there already knows what they’re doing, and each other. Bridges, though, made me feel completely at home. Ruthanna greeted me warmly when I arrived and put me at ease instantly.
The instructors didn’t make me feel dumb when I asked stupid questions. They were very patient and understanding, but didn’t go easy on me either. Maddy, one of the apprentices was a great teacher, showing me how to prepare the horse for riding. I could tell she really loved the horses and it was great to see someone so young with so much knowledge. Megan was my instructor — she didn’t get frustrated with me when I kept making mistakes, forgetting how to post, or when she had to correct my hand placement on the reins 100 times. That said, she did continue to correct me and made sure I learned. It was the perfect balance — she didn’t humiliate me for knowing nothing but she didn’t give up on me either.
There were all levels of riders, and I would definitely recommend Bridges Training Stable to anyone who wants to learn how to ride or improve their skills.
