St Margaret’s Episcopal School

i have 4 children at this school having transferred from another local school. we love st margarets! there are many opportunities for each child to discover what they are passionate about. the education and performing arts/​sports opportunities are fantastic. the families and staff really feel like an extended family!

Rude parents. We were at a volleyball tournament today, and found some of the parents to be inconsiderate, verbally threatening and argumentative. The two to three «want-​to-​be-​coaches» who try to tell the coach what to do, act like ex-​football bullies treating other team’s parents quite poorly. The St. Margaret’s girls volleyball team is great, but these parents make the school look like poor sports and give a bad reputation to a Christian school.

I went here for middle school and high school. It was a terrible experience; for my career aspirations I would have been far better off at a performing arts high school such Hamilton Academy of music in West LA. Or leaving high school early and going to Saddleback for a couple of years.
Don’t believe the hype; when I was there it was full of homophobia. There were homophobic slurs hurled at me on a daily basis by other students. There were even certain teachers who made homophobic remarks while teaching, showing students that certain types of hate speech would be tolerated.
Interesting…the school claimed to be so against racism and to provide a wholesome environment, yet teachers can use anti-​gay slurs without consequence? Why does the school consider homophobia to be not as bad as racism? It can’t be religion since the Episcopal Church is quite liberal concerning gays.
Graduating and getting out of there was the best that had ever happened to me in the first 18 years of my life. Now I am a happy, out gay man who laughs when remembering middle school and upper school at SMES. I can use the whole experience to remind others that it all gets better after high school.
