The San Leandro Rifle & Pistol range is a Public Shooting Range with both Indoor and Outdoor shooting lanes. The Range is owned and operated by the San Leandro Optimist Club, which is a Charitable Service Organization that works with community groups throughout the Bay Area.

Established in the 1930’s and continuously affiliated with the NRA since 1948, the SL Rifle & Pistol Range is a Bay Area Institution. Classes & Activities are regularly scheduled — check the website for additional information.

History

Established in 1923.

The San Leandro Rifle & Pistol Range is owned & operated by the Optimist Club of San Leandro.

In the late 1920’s, the Optimists Club of San Leandro opened a Public Shooting Range as a source to raise funds for their charitable giving in the community. The Club moved the range several times over the years, but in 1960 the City of San Leandro leased the club their current site at the end of Davis Street. Originally, the area was a duck blind on the San Francisco Bay where shooters would come to during Bird Season to hunt.

The club sponsors the oldest NRA Junior Shooting club in the State of California and has been in continuous operation since 1929. Members of the Optimists Club are all volunteers and the organization is a registered non-​profit corporation. Revenues generated by the range are used by the club to provide financial assistance to various charities and groups in the community.

The Rifle & Pistol Range is owned and operated by the San Leandro Optimists Club; but the day to day operation of the Range is handled by Range Manager Bill Winter.

Bill took over Management of the Range in 2009. Many of the regular shooters at San Leandro started coming here with a parent or grand parent decades ago. Bill was one of these shooters. As a boy, he was a member of our Jr. Rifle Club over 50 years ago.

What many people don’t know, is that money collected from the Range goes directly to supporting great community activities throughout the Bay Area. The San Leandro Optimist Club is open to everyone and is a non-​profit organization that works with many different youth groups in the local schools & community as well as help sponsor a number of charitable causes here in San Leandro.

Bill’s hard work managing the Rifle & Pistol Range not only keeps a great Bay Area Institution operating, but also contributes greatly to the welfare of the community.

Been coming here for 2 years. There’s always lanes open and never a wait in my experience on either the indoor, 50 yard or 100 yard lanes.
They keep it simple. They sell ammo, dont rent firearms. Come, shoot, be safe and you’ll be fine. Don’t pay attention to safety and you’ll have the range master (and the rest of us) helping you out until you get it down. Take a 5 minute test to get your membership card and save 10 bucks each time you go.

Overall, this isn’t a horrible shooting range; however, I do feel a bit unconfortable shooting here. From my experiences, I have always been required to undergo a gun safety instructed course from a staff member when shooting for the first time at a new range. The first time shooting here I was not required to take such a course, which I thought was odd. While shooting at the rifle range, I overheard that if you take their safety course you are issued a safey card and you get $ 10 off the range fee for the remainder of the year. The rifle range is small and consist of approximately eight lanes. An inconvenience is that all but one of the lanes is 100 yards only. One lane is either 50 or 100 yards.
My second time shooting here was on a busy Saturday where I shot in the indoor pistol range and the outdoor rifle range. Prior to shooting, I took the safety course to obtain the safety card. I wouldn’t call this a safety course at all which made me feel uncomfortable. All you do is read three pages and answer some questions. My concerns were magnafied when I shot on the rifle range to see others blandly ignoring gun safety rules, including not controlling the muzzle, handling the gun behind the firing area, rapid firing and not using their saftey. The pistol range was pretty typical. The targets were retractable and there was a reasonable amount of space in the room. There were some sketchy guns at the range but for the most part they seemed to be safely handled.
The range itself seems to be fairly well maintained. The outdoor shotgun/​pistol range looks like something out of a horror movie but it works. The first time shooting there was only one person working and the second time (on a very busy day) there was only two people working – a bit understaffed in my opinion. This is also evident in that their 15 minute shooting time consistently runs over, up to 45 minutes. Overall, since this range seems to be a bit more lax on saftey I’d recommend shooting somewhere else when busy.

We arrived here at around 2pm on a Friday. It wasn’t busy at all. Parking lot was nearly empty with about 5 customers cars and the rest employees. If it was the weekend, I’m sure it be a different story. Safety tests are only available on weekends unfortunately, but if you have the opportunity to do so. Do it! It will save you a few bills on every visit.
Indoors for pistols. Yes, you guessed right outdoors for both pistols and rifles. Indoors is highly recommend for pistols due to the fact there are no seize fires. Target retrieval system just makes shooting much more enjoyable. On the other hand, outdoor is also great when you want to hit that target at 100 yards with your file.
The staff are friendly. They are straight to the point. Rules are explained clearly. That’s the way I like it. To some it may come across as rude, but safety first! This place is not located in the boons like most ranges. Industrial community, but not in the sticks. Now that’s a plus! I’m glad to have enjoyed the lanes with responsible folks out there.

This place has come a long way in the last year or so. Back in April they started allowing Full Metal Jackets and Steel Core ammo to be fired. In July they started allowing .22 cal on the 100 yard range. With new range masters and other improvements this place is now my favorite range to fire my guns at. The fact that they have a Ladies Night on Wednesday (which makes for a great time with my girlfriend) doesn’t hurt things either.

Firstly, I want to say This is my «go to» range. I’ve have been to this range a handful of times and everytime Ive gone, I’ve had NO complaints.
I normally wouldn’t write a review on a gun range but after seeing a handful of negative reviews on here, I think it’s time I did. This range is great. Especially if you’re in the east Bay Area (where it’s over ran by libtards and gun grabbers.)
As long as you FOLLOW THE RULES and be on your BEST BEHAVIOR, you won’t have any problems. Some people are complaining on here about how «serious» or how «uptight» the workers are… Uhhhh yeah… It’s a GUN RANGE. Where people go to SHOOT LOADED FIREARMS. I apologize if the range masters don’t necessarily want to make you laugh and have a «jolly ol good time.» That being said, this is personally not the range to go to if you’re a beginner and know NOTHING about guns… I say this PERSONALLY. I absolutely hate when a group of Chinese business Tourists come and crowd up my fire space, asking me to take photos of my Rifle… Go to targetmasters if you’re a beginner.
Other than the random beginner who holds everyone up, this range is great. Great staff, great ranges (indoor and outdoor,) And great prices. I’ll be back weekly! See ya in the stalls!

Wow. I stopped by to inquire about a beginners course as I’ve never had any course on handling a firearm. The older gentleman at the front sighed and proceeded to call me a «low-​life» when I responded to his question about not knowing anyone who knew how to handle a gun. I was thrown off assuming it was a joke as I’ve never been treated with such indignity. F-​bomb from beginning to end. Must be the good ol’ boys club here or something. Never seen a business establishment chase away a potential paying customer before they can even open their wallet.

Straightforward place. So straightforward that outdoor lanes are banging right beside the office, so you may want your hearing protection on before you step off the parking lot. 50-​round bags of ammo in various pistol calibers were $ 20ish each — not bad. Echo other reviewers’ appreciation of the lack of firearm rentals & resultant clientele.

Good thing there is a firing range near where i leave. Huge plus for me!
Price is kinda high ($ 15 member and $ 25 non member) even though its shoot all you can, guess nobody will stay the whole day shooting all their bullets off.
Location is a down fall because its right next to the waste mgmt, if your going outdoors, prepare to smell the smelly smell of the garbage and creek (doesnt bother me that much).
Cashier persons are most senior folks, which sometime it bugs me when they cuss,(especially unnecesaary cussin!). Yeah they are friendly but i wish they could cut down those unnecessary f*kn words!

I didn’t know this existed in my city! Finally went to check out the range last week with a few buddies.
The area is secluded near the industrial area of San Leandro, which means less traffic and more privacy. Entrance fee is $ 25 per person, which is on the high side compared to others I’ve been to. However, the fee covers all day shooting, if you are up for it. I wish they can charge a cheaper second shooter fee for groups of two or more, just a suggestion. Also, you can take their safety test and reduce your fee to $ 15, which I plan on completing soon.
The indoor range was decent. Plenty of lanes and space to get your bang on. They also have an outdoor range to shoot rifles.
Overall, a decent place to practice your second amendment rights. Will come back soon.

Hands down the best place for law enforcement officers to get their qualifications done. One price for multiple qual cards.
I only take off a star because of the location… Next to the dump makes it rather smelly at times.
Remember not to bring full metal jacket ammo, as it’s not allowed on this range (keeping in mind the airport).

I have been going here for about 4 years now and I have to say over the last 5 months, these guys are really making a great effort to make this place friendlier and safer. There has been a positive change in staffing and a nice price savings, if you take their gun safety test. It also seems to be the place where allot of the better firearms instructors teach classes. Don’t expect a carpeted lounge area or valet service, the majority of their profits go to a long list of charitable organizations. Such as, the Davis Street Resource Center. Find me me another range in northern California that does that!

This is a good spot considering its in the middle of the east bay and surrounded by an industrial section of San Leandro. I usually go during non-​peak hours so I never have problems parking. I like how there’s an indoor section and an outdoor section. I took and passed their range safety test which then you get their range safety card, gives you a discount at the range ($ 15). Everytime I’ve been there, never had any problems, feels safe, the shooters are courteous. Should anything come up that doesn’t follow range safety policies, the range officers will handle and address it, which is a good thing and helps prevent anyone from getting hurt.

I was skeptical at first given the reviews, I’ve been to a few ranges since I’ve finally got back into shooting and I was presently surprised. The range has been here since I could remember and at first glance it’s pretty run down. There was a steel shoot being set up so the outdoor range was closed down, little bit of a downer. Ended up unloading indoors and got the job done. The front desk attendant was very helpful and accommodated my group. In all the range has all the essentials to get your fix, rounds are available if you run out.

GIST: All in all, pretty good place so go get your BANG BANG ON!
Decent size range with both an indoor and outdoor range. The cost is a little bit on the expensive side but not bad for being one of the few ranges in the area. $ 15 with range card and $ 25 without. Range card is free. Just go in and take their range safety quiz and wait a week to get the card (see their website for details).
Indoor Range (5 Stars) — very clean. Can be very private if you go at the right time.
Outdoor Range (4 Stars) — not bad. 100 yard max. 15 minute intervals to shoot and a couple minutes in between to do what you got to do (put up target, check on targets, brag to your neighbor, take selfies, etc.).
The place, in general, is clean and well maintained. Parking is limited, but it shouldn’t be an issues unless its on a weekend towards the end of their business hours. So far, I didn’t have an problems with the people that work there. They’re laid back and pretty chill for the most part. If you’re being safe and using common sense then you shouldn’t have a problem.
Reasons for four star: A little pricey. Next to a waste management facility. Certain round restriction — the person at the counter said I could not use Wolf ammunition because it is a steel core round, which is a no-​go for the range. The ammo I was using what not a steel core round; however, it does have a bi-​metal jacket. Guy at the counter tested the round using a magnet to see if its a steel core and it failed due to the magnetic bi-​metal jacket. Didn’t want to argue with the guy so I ended up buying their reload batch, which ended up costing more than a buck a round.

I’ve been once, and only to a steel shoot. I haven’t experienced the indoor range or the rifle range yet.
I had a great time and would love to go back!
The steel shoot was a lot of fun! The range rules are a little quirky the only «safe» direction to hold a firearm is toward the targets. Toward the ground isn’t considered safe (for unknown reasons). Toward the sky isn’t considered safe because the airspace above the range is used by two different airports. Shooters line up nearly side by side so a quick magazine change has to be done in a really unique way (you cannot turn the barrel up to get quick and easy access to the mag well because there may be planes overhead, you cannot turn the gun to the side for any reason because you would be pointing the barrel at people). Once you get used to only pointing the gun forward, and adjusting your training to do all of your gun work only facing forward it’s all right.
The range officers were great and very patient, while maintaining great attention to safety. About 20% of the new shooter group was told to leave almost immediately because they weren’t proficient enough with their weapon yet (they got two runs on a set of the targets to demonstrate the ability to hit targets at 10 – 20 yards). However, the range officers were very polite and definitely encouraged the shooters to spend more time on the indoor range. Not allowing people who were super new to firearms to stay on the range helped me to feel a lot safer.
Make sure you bring a LOT of lead. I burned through a couple hundred rounds hitting the steel and wished I had brought a couple hundred more with me.
You need to have your own firearm, your own holster, 3+ magazines (or speed loaders), you will realistically want some mag holsters (or whatever holds speed loaders), and you will want a container for your brass because each shooter picks up their own brass.
The regulars here were no joke. Highly accurate and really quick at acquiring targets and dropping them.
The range staff were among the best of any range I’ve been to in the North Bay, South Bay, or East Bay.

Basic range. Indoor (handgun, rifles that shoot handgun rounds IE: Marlin Camp 9, and .22s) and an outdoor range where you can shoot rifles, shotguns and handguns.
They rent safety gear and have everything else you need to shoot. Ammo for sale (almost always out of .22 — like everyone else), and targets. You can use your own targets ammo and safety gear and save money, they don’t care. No rental guns.
They run safety classes and a Juniors marksman group.
The place is clean, well run, plenty of parking and good hours. Busy but never packed.
Wednesday is «Ladies night» where ladies shoot free — how do you beet that!

FYI Folks, the mean guy on the staff everyone is complaining about and the reason for some poor reviews «Danny» has been dismissed, I believe the story goes they were reprimanding him for his «behavior» and he just turned in his keys. So no need to worry about that guy anymore.
If your going to come here regularly, get you range safety card become a Member you get a discount and they like knowing there are more safe and savvy shooters in their lanes.
People who go here are pretty pretty chill in general, as long as don’t make people feel nervous and follow the rules. Don’t un case ur gun at the bench, don’t switch lanes without casing the fire arm etc. Folks usually are generally interested in what you are shooting and often will offer you to try their hand loads or shoot their gun, I always try to reciprocate.
Only reason for no 5 star is because it smells like shit down there because it’s next to the sewage plant. Oh and they never have .357 magnum ammo. Oh well…

Been here a few times and always had a decent experience. The last time I was here, there were some ppl who obviously didn’t know gun safety, so my friend had to nicely tell him «finger on the trigger». SCARY. I would suggest they have an employee come out to the range area to supervise once in awhile, to make sure there aren’t any idiots being reckless. Other than that, I like this place.
Shooting ranges are good, they have outdoor, sell you targets/​bullets, and it’s a convenient spot for me to go. Plenty of parking and I like going after work. :)

Bring your own gun (s).
It’s not a rental range, so don’t ask stupid questions.
No steel tips for rifles because the airport is right behind the range.
No rapid fire.
No stupid shit.
Disarm and unload your weapons at your lane, not on the table behind all the people shooting.
Great near by indoor and outdoor range here in my little Gem of a city San Leandro. Don’t judge by looks, since it’s run and and smells disgusting like a pile of burning trash literally since we’re next to the dumps. But I mean, everybody comes here. Range lessons. Cops for range time. Steel shooting on certain nights. Ladies nights. I mean, indoor and out for 15 $ all day till closing AND uses of both ranges, yeah. Sealed a sweet deal here.
The indoor range is spacious and you can shoot farther than Target Master lanes allow, beyond the 7ft. The indoor range rules like any other range are the same, but it’s not highly enforced at this location. Rapid fire the hell out of your weapon, nobody tells you to stop unless you’re me and I’m tired of listening to you aimless shoot at a piece of paper. The 15 $ also includes a target for yourself and you can always bring your own. It’s pretty clean inside with three trash cans for your trash and some chairs and a bench. Great location for people who pick up their own brass or want to hoard.
The outdoor range varies in different distances and has the same 15 minutes shooting period, range officers who come out and check and make sure you’re not being an idiot. So the outdoor range is a little more strict. There’s a lot of BUGS like a million of them just flying all around your face when you’re trying to shoot, it’s good that you have access to both.
I like this range a lot, and especially since TM hasn’t been so great lately. Besides the rapid fire every now and then, SL range is a great place for a shoot. They open early and close late. Their hours are on their Facebook page which they update every week. They have steel shootings on Saturdays. They have ladies night on Wednesdays (where BYOG) and you shoot for free from 5−9pm. Two bathrooms to wash and clean up and a decent sized parking lot.
Make sure to bring your gear, but they do sell ammo and muffs and ear protection. Show of ID and they take both cash and credit. You’ll usually find me here on weekends!
