This is an excellent trail head for Double Peak Park for beginner & intermediates hikers. The total loop to DP park is 5 miles. There is lots of parking, good clean restrooms, water and a couple picnic tables for eating. Not to mention the view, which is awesome cuz San Marcos us usually clear, usually. If you are into trail running, it is good for that as well.

Not a bad place to start the San Elijo loop. I prefer working my way up from Lake Discovery. The trail has been closed since fires came through. City of San Marcos needs to stop worrying about frivolous lawsuits and funding for a trail that doesn’t need repair. It’s a trail! Let nature do it’s work! I’m sure they are waiting on a ton of money from state or federal funding before they open up the trail. Or I could be wrong who knows? I want my/our trails to be accessible.

It always amazes me there are not more people on this beautiful hike. I laugh when I think about how crowded cowles mountain hikes are and how most of the hikes out in San Elijo Hills make you feel like it’s your own secluded trail. There is ample parking and a nice bathroom at the start. You can make this hike whatever you want. There are multiple variations so just get out there and explore. My girlfriend and I sometimes park one car at the other end on double peak rd about half way up on the left where the trail comes out. This makes for about a two mile hike that is moderately strenuous but if we are in a rush still makes for a nice beautiful hike.

Nice trail for mountain bikes. A little short and narrow. Watch out for walkers and the occasional horse. The trail merges with a paved road and continues to a radio tower. You can then work your way through a neighborhood and end up in the center of San Elijo Hills.

Another beautiful day. You get a Birdseye view of San macros on one side and all of San Diego on the other. Simply amazing to walk here.

I like this trail but as another Unilocaler mentioned, signs would really be helpful. One path dead ends about 100 feet off the main path. There’s nothing there but a bench. The main path dead ends at a road. However, I still like it.

A nice, hilly trail for jogging. There is parking, bathrooms, water fountain, a bags for picking up after dogs. The trail itself is smooth and wide, and not likely to cause any twisted ankles or falls. The signs and marking could use some work. It seems to randomly switch back and forth between kilometers and miles, and at Y and 3-way intersections, there are no signs to indicate where the trails leads and where it simply ends at a nearby road. Fix this, and it will be perfect.

Just one of my places to train… You can custom your own workout with this 10K loop that encircles San Elijo Hills by taking different trails that run to town or towards the Lake. Well maintained, beautiful views, and wide trails(until you go deep within the loop). At this trailhead, there is a restroom, picnic tables and dirt parking for cars and trailers. The trails are wide enough to bring horses and every so often you see on cross your path. The 10K loop is moderate with some hills and just enough for the novice runner.
