I truly wanted to enjoy my cut here, because I had a good experience. Sandie was personable and even gave me an extra conditioning treatment, because my hair does not feel fully healthy from coloring it often. I came in asking for simple layers on my medium length hair and I unknowingly left with what looks like two haircuts on one head. I couldn’t tell what I had when leaving the salon due to her cutting it wet and curling it immediately afterwards. I went home, washed my hair, and cried at the result. My «layers» are chin length and go across my entire head, as if I have a bob and my regular length underneath. Mullet anyone? I have already made an appointment with my old stylist at an Austin salon to fix this travesty. I don’t even know how to wear my hair in the meantime. As I previously stated, I wanted to enjoy my cut due to the nice experience, but this ended with tears.

I’m not a person who used to get my hair done regularly and I had just started to see a person when I ended up moving halfway across the country to here. I’m definitely going to stay with San Marcos Hair and keep seeing Sandy.
I took a few photos of what my style would be ideally and how my hair naturally falls and left it to her capable hands. She made me look great! She had a couple suggestions and I gave her free range and I love it! She took into account my eye color even and gave me some highlights to really bring them out.
I’m so glad I found San Marcos hair and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good stylist to get your hair on!

In July 2015 I moved to SMTX. I went to a place (it is now closed) to get my hair cut… I wear it in a pixie. When I left this place my hair was so bad I actually looked like a cancer patient and it took me until Feb 2016 to grow it long enough for someone to cut.
Mary Ann has that ability of cutting a very feminine pixie… I have had countless compliments & it’s only been 5-​days! Yes, I am going back… I have my girl!

Love this salon. The stylists are awesome and have lots of experience. The salon is beautiful and clean. I enjoy visiting and have been going to Janaa Chrystal for over 10 years! Highly recommend.

I am very particular about my hair, so when we moved to San Marcos the task of finding a new place for my monthly cuts filled me with some dread. I have had some bad experiences (funky haircuts) with new stylists in the past and had finally found the right spot before we moved, so I was not really looking forward to this.
However, the quest did not last long and my anxiety was eased when we found San Marcos Hair Co. They were our first find and the only place as far as I’m concerned. I’ve seen just about every stylist here and they all do a great job. Everyone is experienced and super nice. You will not be disappointed no matter who you choose.

I love Stephanie! I came in here on a whim a little over a year ago with a friend and was lucky enough to get scheduled with Stephanie, and I’ve been coming back ever since. She always does a great job with my hair and comes up with funky cuts for me. She’s also really, really sweet. The shop itself is cute, and of course it has the great patio! I highly suggest checking it out.

Had a wonderful experience here. Janaa did a fabulous job on my haircut and doing my layers right, and she was fun to talk to. The salon itself is very charming and in a cool location in the heart of SMTX. I will definitely be going back to have Janaa cut my hair again!

I’m super pleased that I’ve found this place. I looked through the reviews to choose the right stylist for me and decided on Janaa. I hit the jackpot. Such a wonderful lady and all around good person. Oh and can she cut and style that hair and make you laugh at the same time!
So the cool thing about this place is that there is a small dedicated parking area in the back alley right behind the salon, so you don’t have to circle around downtown San Marcos to find parking. You just park and walk a few steps and BAM, you’re inside.
The salon itself is very clean, including the bathroom. There are about five stations, but I’m not sure how many hairdressers actually work there. I only care to get my hair cut from Janaa because once I found her, there’s not much of a reason to change hairdressers. It seems to me though, that all the hairdressers know what they’re doing.
I’m pretty picky about my haircuts and generally don’t like to change hairdressers. I’d found one in South Austin who did a fantastic job and knew exactly what I wanted and could also work with me when I wanted a change, but the drive there and scheduling became a little overwhelming when a lot of things in my life changed schedule-​wise. It’s traumatizing to go to a new hairdresser and have them hack up your hair, but that wasn’t the case when I found Jana.
I was growing my hair out a little at the top so I could fashion a pompadour, but the sides were buzzed short. Janaa totally nailed it. She cut it the exact way I wanted it and also taught me how to style it. Unfortunately, I had a hard time recreating the style in the next week or so because I’d forgotten one of the main steps: put product in it before styling. DUH. Well, near the end of the week, I called her just to ask her how I should style it because I was having trouble with it, but she went ahead and scheduled me in on a Saturday morning and basically cut my hair again, free of charge. She layered it a little more on the top and cut the sides short again. My hair grows extremely fast, so there was actually a bit of hair to cut, I think. I was really happy with it and was able to recreate the hairstyle much easier this time around, partly because of the product and partly because of the layering. Janaa really knows what she’s doing.
The last time I went in, I asked to have it all pretty much cut off. The hair in my face really irritates me. What a curse that women have to typically wear their hair so long. If I did that, I’d probably claw my eyes out and there would be scratch marks all over my face. Hair and bangs prickling your face all day just does not go well with allergies, I tell ya. So yeah, I have short hair. Probably shorter than most dudes. But if you get someone who knows their stuff, it’s not a problem for a woman to get her hair cut short, like pixie short.
So Jana cut it all off and styled it as well, even though there really wasn’t much to style. I’ll grow it out a little and see what I want to do next. Maybe I’ll just shave it all off. Who knows? The beauty of hair is that it always (well, typically. guys have a curse to when it comes to hair, I guess) grows back, so you can pretty much do whatever the heck you want with it and it grows out and you can do something different. Perfect for someone as ADHD as I am.
And I have a feeling that Jana will be able to keep up with all my ADHD OCD tendencies. Yay.

It’s not very often I feel like I can really trust a hairstylist. I mean, they all have their own personal paradigm of what hairstyling is about and that doesn’t always fit my own little definition of sexy hair. Not only that, but when you move to a completely new state, it’s not like you have a single clue who to go to and ensure that you don’t leave looking like a badly damaged poodle. This is why I love Unilocal!Stars for San Marcos Hair Company say a lot.
I called literally a couple days before I wanted to get in and I needed an appointment for myself and my boyfriend, who kept complaining about his cheap haircuts. Thank you Stephanie for getting us both in, albeit in the only hour she had available. I usually try to find some picture of some superstar to bring in as an example, but I’ve since ceased from caring that much and just assumed that she would be able to do something relatively good. …And she did!
Stephanie was super sweet and knowledgeable. She got my cute boy looking decently sexy, albeit a little shorter than he wanted and she did it without treating him like he was some glam boy (he’s a cowboy, and about as masculine as they come). (Can we say bravo for how simple the interior is and not intimidatingly glamorous for a man’s man?! Whew.)
Next came my turn. I had gotten a haircut from a coworker in Nevada as she was graduating from cosmetology school and it was not growing out very well. Not only that but my hair was dry and snarly no matter how many times I brushed it or put conditioner in it. Stephanie attacked that situation right away. First of all she recommended an entirely different way for me to condition my hair and then she incorporated a good trim into my haircut so that my hair could have a refresh button for a while. Although she did recommend a very expensive hair product that I still haven’t afforded, she was very attentive in helping my hair situation.
Now I can’t say I’m ridiculously impressed with my haircut and all, but one can’t expect perfection right off the bat, and Stephanie even admitted that. She told us that she really appreciates clients who come back and tell her how to do it better, not to just go off to a totally new hairstylist. And ya know what? That’s exactly what I will do. My cute boy has a little tweak he’d like but mine wasn’t too far off. We’ll see ya again, Stephanie!

Before I got my haircut here I was so nervous. I would normally think going to a bigger city is good for a hair cut because the salons there are ‘trendy’ and you won’t end up with an 80’s style. I was so wrong. San Marcos Hair Co is better than any hair salon I’ve ever been too! Sandie is a hair goddess! She was so amazing and nice! I went in for a cut and color and she took the time to first cut my hair and see the texture and then had me come in after she devised the perfect plan for my hair. She really took the time to get to know what I wanted and her suggestion was even better than what I came in for. People compliment me all the time about my hair now. She is a gem and so positive and sweet!

No questIon, in my two visits to the San Marcos Hair Company Janaa has given me the best haircuts I have ever had. My son also had his hair cut by Janaa today and she did an excellent job. She is also a hoot. We have great conversations about everthing and anything She makes getting your haircut a fun event. I highly recommend the SMHC and Janaa. We will be getting our hair cut by Janaa for a long time ro come.

Went here first time for a haircut and brow wax. I am not sensitive when it comes to my hair or scalp, but they were very rough throughout the process, tossing my head back and forth like there wasnt a neck attached to it. The hair cut was fine, nothing too hard to do. But the brow wax is what upset me. To pay THAT MUCH money to only have you wax under the eyebrows… not even between them or even trimming the long ones or plucking for fine detail… that is why I wont be coming back for my brows. The stylist seemed to be in a rush the whole time and didnt hardly talk to me. I was in and out fast before I could realize the poor job they did. I went to another brow specialist elsewhere to finish the job.

This morning I desperately needed a haircut because I needed to go to San Antonio to visit friends and my hair was shaggy. This nice woman took me as a walk in. She have me a nice haircut and was very kind. At the end of my visit she tried not to let me pay. This was my first time at this salon but I definitely be back to visit her.

First off free parking in the back just for the salon gets an A+ in my book. Second they have a hair happy hour from 3 – 5 Tuesday through Thursday where women’s hair cuts are only $ 28 but be warned they don’t blow dry unless you want to spend an extra $ 4 which was the only drawback. Third, Jana who cut my hair was awesome and did exactly what I wanted. It’s amazing how many stylists just don’t listen to you and she did! She cut off the appropriate length and was easy to talk to without being over the top. Lastly, the shop is super cute & when they shampoo your hair you get to look out onto their serene patio area. I will definitely be back especially for the price and quality of service and the convenience. I love supporting small businesses so I’ll be back!

I will defiantly return to this Salon and have Stephanie do my hair again. I have been in San Marcos for over five years and have yet to find a salon /​hairdresser that could do what I asked.
The Salon is beautiful inside — the owner is very friendly and I was pleasantly surprised to have such a nice long chat with her while waiting for my appointment. The workstations are clean and very cute. There is enough room for the client and stylist to move around without feeling cramped. The shampoo area has a wall of windows that lets in a lot of light and it’s just really, lovely.
Stephanie is AWESOME at her profession. My hair is not corporative and she actually understood what I was trying to tell her about it, and she gave me the exact haircut I wanted and showed me how to style it. For once I felt that my hair looked beautiful and confident that I could recreate the look myself when I got home. She is very friendly, and extremely helpful when deciding what you should do with your hair and is just very, very, good at her job.
The pricing for what you get in terms of service, quality, customer service, and overall experience is very reasonable. There are other salons that charge a lot more and don’t offer up what this one has.
If you’re on the fence about going, try it out. I have never been happier than I am with this haircut and my overall experience and i’m so excited that I finally found a salon that I can feel comfortable and confident in returning to.

This place does not look like much from the outside, which is why in my four years of living in San Marcos it took me until November to actually try this place out after a recommendation from a friend.
You walk in (with an appointment is preferred, but they do take walk-​ins) to a small salon with a waiting area, shampoo area, and four stations. I’ve never seen all four stations full.
Stephanie cut my hair back in November and Janaa cut my hair today. Two very different women, but both very skilled with a pair of scissors. They listen to what you want and Janaa usually puts in her two cents, offering suggestions on what would work for you. I love Janaa because she won’t do anything you can’t maintain at home. If you tell her all I do is wash and go, then she will find a style for that.
Today Janaa told me something and did something for me that I would never expect from a hairdresser/​salon owner. I told her how my shampoo is too expensive and I can’t wait for the next Ulta liter sale to buy it again. I told her how I switched to a cheaper shampoo and even my boyfriend could tell the difference (yikes!) She asked me what it was, it just so happens to be Redken which they use in the Salon. After cutting my hair Janaa ran down to a Redken sales person who only sells to licensed cosmetologists and picked up a liter of my shampoo. She then returned to the store and sold me the shampoo at her price ($ 20, not too shabby.) Janaa told me she sells her products at a lower price because she only charges what she would be willing to pay as a client. I was super impressed and happy with my haircut and my favorite shampoo back!
If I wasn’t graduating I’d be returning again. Of course I do have to come back to SM a few times next year…

Parking lot in back does not hold many cars, you might have to find a spot on the street.
