Dr. Edward Onuma completed his undergraduate work at Cornell University and received his Ph.D. in physiology at SUNY at Buffalo, NY. He received his medical degree at SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse, NY in 1990. After his internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital Medical Center in New York City, he completed his Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ. He then received a grant from the Japanese government to conduct research on Barrett’s esophagus at Chiba University Medical School (Chiba, Japan). While there he also received a temporary Japanese medical license and learned advanced endoscopic techniques, including techniques for the detection of flat colon polyps. Dr. Onuma has been practicing in California since 1999. He is Board Certified in Gastroenterology and is fluent in English and Japanese. He lives on the Peninsula with his wife and two sons, and enjoys hiking, photography and his new hobby of barbecuing/​grilling.

I met with Dr. Onuma yesterday and had a pleasant experience. When I got to his office I was greeted by his staff. After filling out some paperwork I was escorted to an examination room. A nurse came in asked me a few questions and took my vital signs. A few minutes later Dr. Onuma came in and asked me some question pertaining to my stomach problem. After reviewing his notes he told me about two ways how he could check for bacteria called H. pylori in my stomach, one was a blood test and the other was a more thorough test which is called a gastrointestinal endoscopy which he could check for ulcers, bacteria and other ailments. Before I left I was scheduled to have a endoscopy.
I was completely satisfied with my visit with Dr. Onuma and his staff.

I took a family member to him and he misdiagnosed, since then my family member passed away because Dr. Onuma did not order more tests to diagnose a fatal disease. I do not recomend anybody to go and see him.

Dr. Onuma may be a decent gastroenterologist… but I wouldn’t really know. I went to him on a referral from the GP with complaints of stomach pain and suspicion of an ulcer. He took down my history, heard my complaints, and suggested that before doing endoscopy, we should try a blood test for antibodies to ulcer-​causing bacteria. That was a step in the right direction, so I went and got my bloodwork done.
And then I did not hear from him. Generally, I would expect a doctor’s office to call me with lab results and suggest what to do next with such a complaint. I was busy enough that I didn’t realize until much later. When no word had come over a month later, I called.
I was told the doctor would call me back by the end of the day, but he called the next day. It had turned out that I didn’t show antibodies for H. pylori, but it also didn’t sound like he was sure how to proceed. He said I might try endoscopy next, but didn’t really bother to tell me what he thought it might be instead. The conversation was very short, and he didn’t seem to care to get to the bottom of this. Not sure I would undergo general anesthesia for that sort of lackadaisical attitude.
I did not return. I now have the task of finding a good GI specialist elsewhere.
